FENWICK TOURNAMENT RECAPS

PRELIMINARY ROUND-Friday

Fenwick 13 New Trier 2

The Friars jumped out to a 5-1 first quarter lead and controlled the game from start to finish, knocking off the Trevians 13-2. Emily Bonk and Farren Rixter led the way with three goals each, while Liz Perry added two. Mary McCarthy, Christina Romano, Alison Pavlik, Moira Preston, and Maggie Cahill also scored for Fenwick. New Trier got goals from Bethany Teska and Katy Alexander.

Mother McAuley 4 Oak Park 2

Mother McAuley came from behind to hold off Oak Park 4-2 in the second game of the tournament. Kendra Betke got OPRF on the board with a first quarter goal, and goalie Stella Brown held McAuley scoreless in the first period. The Mighty Macs responded in the second quarter, as Bianca Cabrera and Maggie Coghlan added goals to give McAuley a 2-1 halftime lead. They never let up in the third quarter, with Sandra Perez and Jennifer Valazquez each scoring a goal to make it 4-1. The Huskies' Lauren Daggett made it 4-2 in the last quarter, but Mighty Macs' goalie Erin Delaney kept Oak Park in check to help McAuley earn the victory.

Mundelein 13 Lyons Township 11

Jordan Jaeckel paced the Mustangs with four goals in a 13-11 win over Lyons Township. Mundelein led 4-2 after the first quarter, but Lyons narrowed the gap to 4-3 on a powerplay goal early in the second quarter. That was as close as the Lions would get, as the Mustangs scored five straight goals to take a 9-4 lead going into the break. Mundelein was able to hang on for the victory in the second half, getting three goals from Maggie Gates and two more from Callie Andrysiak. Lyons was led by Lauren Burel and Katy Fieldhouse, who each scored four goals on the night.

Stevenson 5 Evanston 4

Stevenson held off a late charge by Evanston to earn a 5-4 victory in the fourth game. Terri Bukofzer scored four goals to lead the way for the Patriots. Sarah Boedecker scored the first goal of the game for the Stevenson, but Evanston's Maggie Hatcher tied the score on a powerplay goal a minute later. Bukofzer put Stevenson back on top with 3:22 remaining in the half, but once again, the Wildkits tied it at 2-2 when Annie Grossinger scored on a powerplay. Bukofzer got her second goal with a minute left in the second period to put the Patriots up 3-2 at halftime. Bukofzer scored twice more in the third quarter, but Anna Ditton kept Evanston within range of the Patriots with a goal from two meters out to make it 5-3 heading into the final quarter. The Wildkits got to within 5-4 when Ditton scored her second goal with 2:22 left in the game, but the Patriots were able to hang on for the close win.

Fenwick 7 Rockford (MI) 4

In the final game of the night, Fenwick fought back from a 3-1 first quarter deficit to defeat Rockford 7-4. Rockford scored with 0:04 left in the first period to lead by two, but the Friars responded in the second as Farren Rixter scored three times from two meters and Liz Perry added a goal to make it 5-3 at halftime. Rockford could only score once more on Fenwick goalie Erin Foley in the second half, and Mary McCarthy gave the Friars a 6-4 lead at the end of third quarter with a goal. Emily Bonk scored on a lob shot from seven meters to clinch the victory for Fenwick, who advanced to the championship bracket of the tournament.

PRELIMINARY ROUND-Saturday

Mother McAuley 14 Grand Rapids 7

McAuley jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. They increased their advantage to 10-3 by halftime to coast to a 14-7 victory. Jennifer Valazquez led the way with four goals, while Bianca Cabrera, Sandra Perez, and Maggie Coghlan each added three scores of their own. Lily Gonzalez also added her first goal of the tournament. The win moved McAuley into the first place bracket of the tournament.

Mundelein 8 Sandburg 7

Mundelein exploded for four goals in the first period in what looked like a potential blowout. But Sandburg fought back in the second quarter with three straight goals, as Ami Czerwinski scored on a powerplay and added a second goal, and Beth Haynes scored from two meters out to make it 4-3. Haynes scored the next two goals of the game in the third quarter, giving the Eagles their first lead with 3:41 remaining in the third quarter. Jordan Jaeckel tied it at 5-5 for the Mustangs one minute later, but Sandburg's Nicole Srutowski responded with her first goal with just 0:40 left in the third period to make it 6-5. Jaeckel had the answer once again, tying the score at the end of the quarter with her third goal of the game. Srutowski's second goal put Sandburg on top just fifteen seconds into the last period, but Maggie Gates scored a two meter goal with 4:55 to tie the score at 7-7. Down the stretch, Mundelein earned a powerplay and Liz McClure scored with only 0:42 remaining in the game to give Mundelein the 8-7 win. That victory sent them to the first place bracket later in the evening. Gates and Jaeckel led Mundelein with three goals apiece, and Callie Andrysiak and McClure each had one. The Eagles were led by the three goals by Haynes and two goals each from Srutowski and Czerwinski, and were helped by the solid goaltending of Alicia Christensen.

Evanston 9 Neuqua Valley 5

Maggie Hatcher helped give Evanston an early lead over Neuqua Valley with two quick goals in the first period, and Evanston never looked back while earning a 9-5 first round victory. The Wildkits grabbed a 4-1 lead after one period, getting the two goals from Hatcher as well as scores from Anna Ditton and Brooke Ramsey. Neuqua sliced the lead down to 6-3 at halftime, but Evanston was able to hold them off the entire second half to get the win. Amy Reams, Lindsay Wich, and Alex Wich also scored for Evanston, while Hatcher added a third goal late in the game. Neuqua Valley was led by Deni Stritch, who scored three goals, and had a goal each from Elise Engelhard and Amanda Wable.

Rockford (MI) 23 New Trier 2

Rockford scored early and often and never let up against New Trier en route to a 23-2 win in the first round. The Trevians scored in the second quarter from Bethany Teska and a late goal by Ari Hamm. Rockford advanced to the second place bracket while New Trier fell to the third place division.

Grand Rapids (MI) 10 Oak Park 6

Oak Park had an early 1-0 lead after a Kendra Betke goal in the first minute of the game. Grand Rapids quickly responded with two goals to lead 2-1 after the first period. They increased their lead to 4-1 by halftime, but the Huskies got to within 7-5 of Grand Rapids in the third quarter after goals by Betke, a powerplay goal by Lauren Daggett, and one by Panlos. Grand Rapids put the game away late, extending the lead  to 10-5 in the fourth quarter. Daggett added her second goal in the fourth period, but it was not enough as Grand Rapids advanced to the second place bracket with the 10-6 win.

Sandburg 16 Lyons Township 12

There was plenty of offense in this one, as Sandburg was able to outscore Lyons 16-12 to advance to the second place bracket with the win. Beth Haynes led the Eagles with eight goals, while Ami Czerwinski added four scores and Mandy Nawojski scored twice. Sam Cody and Katie Ciurej also added a goal each for Sandburg. Lyons was paced by Lauren Burel's six goals, while Katy Fieldhouse pitched in four scores. Mae Harris and Sarah Trilla rounded out the scoring for the Lions with a goal apiece.

Stevenson 13 Neuqua Valley 7

Stevenson completed the preliminary round with a 13-7 victory over Neuqua Valley, a win that moved the Patriots into the first place bracket. Stevenson jumped out to a 4-0 lead on two goals by Sam Gibson and scored by Katie Michelau and Keely Wimer. Wimer added another goal in the second, and Terri Bukofzer scored twice to give Stevenson a 7-2 halftime lead. The Patriots controlled the tempo en route to their second tournament victory, as Bukofzer and Wimer led the way with five goals each. Neuqua Valley's Deni Stritch was their leading scorer with four goals, while Amanda Walde, Amanda Adducci, and Jenna Jeffers each scored once for the Wildcats, who moved to the third place division.
