NAPERVILLE NORTH DOMINATES BARRINGTON

By Aaron Brown

Barrington, IL -- Naperville North qualified for the state tournament last year for the first time in team history. So it should come as no surprise that they appear to be a team on a mission after rival Naperville Central has been anointed the area favorite for the 2004 season. Even though they have a new head coach on the sidelines, returning players from last year's sectional championship team like Justin Licht, Jon Rapchak, and Andrew Fitch are out to prove that last season was no fluke.

Perhaps the early-season motivation has helped the Huskies, as they were impressive once again in a 16-2 rout of Barrington (1-2) on Friday night. Steve Tangen scored on a breakaway in the first minute of the game to put North ahead, and they would never relinquish the lead. Freshman Alex Buck scored four of his five goals in the first quarter, and the Huskies finished the period ahead 9-1. Tangen and Andrew Fitch scored two goals apiece in the quarter to contibute to Naperville's advantage.

Naperville North added three more goals in the second quarter, with all three scores credited to Jon Rapchack. Meanwhile, goalie Justin Licht only needed to make seven saves in the game, but he also chipped in with three assists in the first half alone. Steve Hatcher also had five assists in the first half for the Huskies.

Barrington was able to score once in the first quarter on a breakaway goal by Drew Stetson. Jon Fraczek also added a breakaway goal after a steal at halfcourt. After the half, the Huskie's defense put the clamps on Barrington's offense and the Broncos were rarely able to get a shot off. Naperville North added a few goals late in the game to put the icing on their second win of the season.

Naperville North (2-0) hosts #5 Latin next Tuesday at 5:00pm, while Barrington will look to get back on the winning track when they host Hoffman Estates (0-2) on Monday.
