FENWICK TOURNAMENT - Day One

By Aaron Brown

Oak Park, IL -- The Fenwick Tournament started on Friday night with five opening round matchups. Both Fenwick and Brother Rice went 2-0 to advance to the first place division tomorrow night. Evanston surprised St Pats and is one win away from joining the Friars and Crusaders for a chance to win the 5th Annual Dan Lynch Classic. The preliminary matches continue tomorrow morning at 8:00am and the championship games take place in the late afternoon and into Saturday night.

#1 Fenwick won the opener 19-6 over crosstown rival #11 Oak Park in a battle between two teams who will likely play against each other again at the end of the year at sectionals. Mark Melnyk led the Friars with 6 goals and Chris Parolin added five scores in the victory. Kevin Williams scored two goals in the loss for Oak Park.

#3 St Pats continued to struggle as they lost 11-9 to #13 Evanston in the second game of the night. Wildkits' junior Alex Negronida was dominant in the win, scoring seven goals. The game came down to the final minute, as Evanston led 10-9 and St Pats had one last chance to tie the score. The Shamrocks were unable to get a shot off and in a scramble to steal the ball from the goalie, Jordan Binder was left wide open to make the score 11-9 and clinch the Evanston victory.

In the third game, #2 Brother Rice handed #10 Mundelein its' first loss of the season, as a balanced offensive attack helped the Crusaders earn a 15-8 win. Mark DiCola and Omar Vasquez scored three goals apiece, while Matt Wood, Brian Kuczynski, and Ulysses Cortes added two goals in the game.

Fenwick earned its' second win of the tournament and advanced to the first place division with a hard-fought 14-8 win over #6 Homewood-Flossmoor. Flossmoor actually led 3-1 at the end of the first quarter, but the Friars fought back to take a 7-4 lead by halftime. They never let up, as Flossmoor could only get within two goals of Fenwick before the Friars put them away in the fourth quarter.

In the final contest of the night, Brother Rice advanced to the first place division by beating #4 Stevenson 16-12. The teams traded goals throughout the game, and Rice had an 8-6 lead at halftime. Stevenson could never get the lead under two goals in the second half, but gave themselves a chance after scoring on a two-on-one breakaway to make the score 14-11 with 2:41 remaining in the game. The Crusaders countered with a goal less than one minute later to seal the victory.
