McHenry at Loyola

By Aaron Brown

Wilmette, IL -- Trailing 6-4 at halftime against #15 McHenry isn't the best situation to be in, but for #9 Loyola it was business as usual, as they scored six straight goals to start the second half to get a crucial 12-7 win at home on Monday night.

Drew Schneider was a force for McHenry, scoring five first half goals to give his team the lead late in the second quarter. He was shut down by Loyola's Sean McLaughlin and a sloughing defense, however, and he was held to just one second half goal. Meanwhile, the Ramblers got contributions from Colin Hulseman (5 goals), McLaughlin (4 goals), Kevin Riordan (1 goal), and Tommy O'Bryan (1 goal) on the offensive end in the second half to finish strong and earn the victory.

Loyola jumped out to a 4-3 lead midway through the second quarter, but Schneider got free and scored on a breakaway to tie the score with 3:33 left in the half. He then stationed himself at seven meters and scored on a sweep shot past Loyola's Matt Leck to give McHenry their first lead at 5-4. They would add another goal with just 0:05 remaining in the half to take a 6-4 advantage at the break.

Hulseman started the second half scoring for the Ramblers on a drive assisted by Riordan. O'Bryan would follow that with a shot from the point to tie the score  at 6-6 with 4:37 left in the third period. McLaughlin would put Loyola up for good with a shot from outside with 1:06 to go in the quarter to make it 7-6 and they would never look back.

In the fourth quarter, Hulseman would score from the point in the first minute to make it 8-6. McLaughlin then scored on a powerplay and Hulseman added another goal on a skip shot, and with 4:49 left in the fourth period Loyola had taken control of the game with the lead at 10-6. Schneider tried to stop the Loyola run when he got free on a breakaway, but he had his shot from four meters saved by Leck. He grabbed the rebound, however, and tossed a shot over his head into the net to cut the lead to 10-7 with 4:00 remaining in the game.

That was as close at McHenry would get, as Loyola added goals from Riordan and Hulseman in the final three minutes to give the Ramblers the 12-7 victory.
