New Trier Beats Shorthanded Mundelein 11-4

By Aaron Brown

Mundelein, IL -- It didn't take long for New Trier to take advantage of a Mundelein team playing without two starters. The Trevians scored five first quarter goals and led from start to finish as they upset #7 Mundelein 11-4 on Thursday night.

Gerrit Adams scored five goals to lead the Trevians, while Mundelein, already playing without starters Greg Peck and Andrew Peterson, lost starting driver Mark Schuessler in the second quarter to a game ejection and were left without any substitutes for the remainder of the game.

New Trier (5-2) got on the board first as Dan Nyhan found a streaking Matt Nowlin in front of the goal with 5:29 to go in the first quarter. Later in the quarter, Mundelein missed on a powerplay opportunity but Richard Ochab recovered a loose ball and scored on a backhand to tie the game with 3:18 left in the first period. Adams fired right back, hitting a seven meter shot from the left flat to give New Trier a 2-1 lead. They scored again on a breakaway goal by Chris Soper, who was assisted by Bryant Leech after a save. Adams scored with 1:25 left from the right wing, and the Trevians closed out the quarter as Soper drew a four meter penalty shot, and just barely got his attempt past Mundelein's goalie Tyler Rayomme to make the score 5-1 at the end of the first quarter.

New Trier continued to shut down Mundelein's offense in the second quarter, and got a big break when Schuessler was ejected after a physical play at two meter defense. Adams scored in the first minute of the quarter from two meters to make it 6-1, and the Trevians went up 7-1 when Sam Wampler added a powerplay goal before the half.

Mundelein was still within range of New Trier, but Trevians' reserve Brian Hart made a steal and went coast-to-coast for a goal to start the second half to make it 8-1. The Mustangs were able to score three goals in the third quarter to narrow the gap a bit, as Sean Larsen scored a powerplay goal on a shot from the point and Brandon Schawel added a powerplay goal of his own. New Trier did not let up, however, as goals from Adams, Soper, and Hart had them ahead 10-3 in the closing seconds of the period.  Mark Selle scored for Mundelein from seven meters out as the quarter ended to make it 10-4. Adams added a fourth quarter goal for New Trier to make the final score 11-4.

Without Peterson, Mundelein used Rayomme in goal, who actually held his own with some pretty big saves throughout the game. He almost denied Soper's four meter penalty shot, getting his left arm on the ball before it trickled in. Bryant Leech was a standout in goal for New Trier in the deep end, where he shut the Mustangs out in two periods of action.
