Oak Park Stuns Evanston 12-10

By Aaron Brown

Evanston, IL -- Oak Park bounced back from a slow start to come from behind and stun Evanston 12-10 on Thursday night. Kevin Williams provided the majority of the offense for the Huskies with five goals, while goalie Scott Dunlavey held the Wildkits scoreless in the second quarter to help jumpstart the comeback victory.

Evanston was quick to get on the board in the first quarter, as hole set Jordan Binder scored from two meters out just thirteen seconds into the game to give the Wildkits an early lead. Alex Johnson then made a steal and assisted Will Vogel on a breakaway goal to make the score 2-0 just one minute later. The Huskies calmed down from the rough start by cutting the lead in half on a score by Matt Nickels, who fired a laser into the right corner of the net in the shallow end to make it 2-1. Johnson responded for Evanston with a goal from four meters to put the Wildkits ahead 3-1 after one quarter.

Things started to click for the Huskies in the second quarter, as they scored three straight goals to take a 4-3 lead at halftime. Kevin Williams scored first from two meters out with 4:16 remaining in the period, and Vasily Baycharova tied it at 3-3 on Oak Park's next possession. Meanwhile, Dunlavey made five saves in the quarter, including a stop on Binder's four meter penalty shot and on Alex Negronida's backhand from close range. That helped the Huskies keep the game tied until the last minute of the half, when Matt Flynn put them ahead with a two meter shot into the right corner to make it 4-3.

Evanston responded quickly in the third period, as Binder made a beautiful switch from his left to right hand in front of the goal, and flipped a shot into the right corner to even the score at 4-4. The Huskies added goals from Rob Burton and Pat Burton in the following minute to retake the lead 6-4. The Wildkits sliced into the lead, scoring on a textbook counterattack as Vogel found Kelly Wunder driving towards the goal to make the score 6-5. Negronida tied it again on a driving goal assisted by Binder with 4:03 to go in the third quarter. That was the last time the Wildkits would not trail, as Williams scored two straight two meter goals to push the Oak Park lead to 8-6. Vogel made it 8-7 with a drive on a fastbreak with 1:21 left, but that was as close as the Wildkits would get. Williams scored another goal from two meters to help Oak Park increase their lead to 9-7 at the end of the period.

Williams picked up where he left off in the fourth quarter, giving the Huskies a 10-7 lead with 5:48 remaining, and Rob Burton made it 11-7 moments later on a shot from the left flat. The Wildkits did not give up, Tim Fodor scored his first goal with 4:23 remaining, and Binder cut the lead down to 11-9 with 1:32 to go on a goal from two meters out. Evanston applied pressure on defense, but the Huskies were able to draw an ejection with under a minute left, and Matt Nickels sealed the win with a score from the point to make it 12-9. Evanston got a late goal from Tim Silkaitis with 0:40 left to make it 12-10, but their last shot attempt was saved by Dunlavey and Oak Park emerged victorious.

Williams had five goals, Nickels and Rob Burton had two, and Flynn, Baycharova, and Pat Burton each added one score apiece for the Huskies. Evanston was led by Binder's three scores, Wunder added two, and Silkaitis, Fodor, Johnson, Negronida, and Wunder each scored once.
