Huskies Remain Undefeated With 8-4 Win Over Neuqua

By Aaron Brown

Naperville, IL -- #5 Naperville North used a second half surge to put away #17 Neuqua Valley en route to an 8-4 victory on Monday night. The Huskies improved to 16-0 and relied on five goals from Kim Buck and the solid goaltending of Kelly McCann to get the road win.

Buck started the scoring in the first period, scoring on a lob shot from two meters to put the Huskies ahead 1-0. McCann then denied Neuqua's Deni Stritch on a powerplay opportunity to keep North in front, but Wildcats' freshman goalie Kayley Provow made a great save of her own in the final minute of the first quarter on a two meter shot from Sarah Fitch.

Stritch tied the score for Neuqua on a two meter shot with 5:08 remaining in the first half. Provow then denied Trisha Meier on a driving shot to keep the score even heading into the final minute of the period. Both goalies traded saves on the next two possessions, and Buck finally broke the tie with a goal from two meters to put North in front 2-1 at halftime.

Early in the third quarter, Naperville North's Kayley Bateman had her two meter shot denied by Provow, but Buck put home the rebound for her third score of the night and a 3-1 lead. Amanda Walde cut that lead down to 3-2 with a goal from two meters in the next minute, and Jenna Jefferds tied the score with 1:49 to go in the third on a breakaway goal. Jefferds had another chance to score moments later, but her drive was stopped by McCann.

Stritch and Buck both missed shots early in the fourth quarter, and McCann stopped Neuqua's best chance for the lead by saving Megan Patterson's shot from the left wing. Buck broke the tie with a bullet from outside seven meters after a foul, which put the Huskies ahead 4-3 with just 5:08 remaining in the game. The Wildcats responded quickly, as Jefferds found Walde open for a goal on a powerplay with 4:11 left to tie the score at 4-4.

With their undefeated season hanging in the balance, the Huskies took over down the stretch. Buck tipped in a brilliant pass from Meier with 3:56 left to play to put North ahead 5-4. McCann stopped Walde's backhand from two meters on Neuqua's next possession, and Meier added a powerplay goal for the Huskies to put them ahead 6-4. Brandy Savino added a late goal on an assist from Bateman to give the Huskies a 7-4 lead, and Savino assisted Meier on a powerplay goal in the final minute to seal the 8-4 victory for Naperville North.

Buck led all scorers with five goals for Naperville North. Meier added two scores and Savino added one. Walde led Neuqua with two goals, and Stritch and Jefferds had one goal apiece.
