Fenwick Outlasts Sandburg 14-6

By Aaron Brown

Oak Park, IL -- Sandburg kept things close with Fenwick in the first quarter, but the #1 Friars pulled away in the second half for a 14-6 win over the Eagles on Tuesday night.

In the first quarter, Kevin Kysiak gave Fenwick an early lead with a goal from seven meters out. Sandburg's Brian Dommer had the answer just fourteen seconds later, as he scored from two meters out to tie the score at 1-1. The Friars' Bill Dunlap drew a four meter penalty midway through the period, and Oscar Calderon beat Sandburg goalie Tommy Strode to the left corner to put the Friars ahead 2-1. Chris Parolin scored his first goal on a lob shot less than a minute later to give Fenwick a 3-1 advantage. But the Eagles responded, as Dommer added his second goal from two meters with 0:28 seconds left. Sandburg got the ball back one last time in the period, and Bill Sindewald's shot from the point was deflected past Fenwick's Dan Evon to tie the score at 3-3 at the end of the quarter.

Fenwick's Paul Klotz helped the Friars reclaim the lead in the second quarter, as he drilled a shot from point with 5:37 left in the half to make it 4-3. Mark Melnyk scored on a shot from seven meters out to put Fenwick ahead 5-3, but Chris Cloy took a pass from Dommer on the right wing to help Sandburg make it 5-4 just moments later. Strode saved Melnyk's powerplay shot with 2:04 left in the half to keep the Eagles within one, but Melnyk found Calderon open in front of the goal for a score to make it 6-4 with 1:14 to play in the second period. Evon made a save with under thirty seconds left in the half, and Dunlap scored from the right wing to give Fenwick a 7-4 lead at halftime.

Tom Parolin found Dunlap open on the post for a powerplay goal to start the second half to make it 8-4, but Jon Christensen cut the advantage to 8-5 with a goal for Sandburg from the right side a minute later. Chris Parolin countered with a goal for Fenwick to make it 9-5, and he scored on a pass from Calderon moments later to make it 10-5. Dommer added a two meter goal for Sandburg to slice the advantage to 10-6, but Parolin responded once again with his fourth goal to make it 11-6. Tom Parolin scored his first goal late in the period as Fenwick took a 12-6 lead into the final quarter.

Kysiak skipped a shot past Strode early in the fourth quarter to make it 13-6, and Chris Parolin scored a two meter goal with 4:58 left to make it 14-6.
