THE ILLPOLO REPORT

Week 2

The following is a summary of what took place during the second week of the season. This is not a complete list and we can only include a few people in this summary, but the purpose is to recognize a few of the best performances from each week.

Players To Watch

BOYS

Eric Curia (Naperville North)

John Gutierrez (St Patrick)

John Mayer (Brother Rice)

GIRLS

Sammi Craig (Richards)

Tammy Stelnicki (St Ignatius)

For a complete description, see Players to Watch: Volume II

Biggest Impact

BOYS

Connor Brown/Matt Farmer (Fenwick)

The Fenwick duo combined to score 35 goals and lead the Friars to their own tournament title over the weekend.

For a complete description, see Super Ballers 2

Tyler Hunt (Waubonsie Valley)

Hunt scored the game-winning goal with under two minutes remaining in Waubonsie's 14-13 win over STC North.

GIRLS

Caitlin Sershon (Loyola)

Sershon scored the only goal in overtime to help lift Loyola past New Trier 10-9 on Friday night.

Emma Martinus (Bremen)

Martinus recorded 16 goals to lead the Red Jaguars to their own tournament title and a 3-0 record over the weekend.

Top Goalie Performances

BOYS

Dan Newell (Fenwick)

The Friars' shotstopper allowed an average of 4 goals per game in wins over three top ten teams (Curie, H-F, NC) to help Fenwick win their own tournament over the weekend.

Pat Stablein (Naperville Central)

The Redhawks' goalie allowed just 4 goals per game in wins over Oak Park, St Ignatius, and Stevenson; he made two straight breakaway saves in the third quarter to keep the Redhawks ahead by one goal in their win over St Ignatius.

GIRLS

Julia Campbell (Naperville Central)

Campbell totaled 37 saves and allowed less than four goals per game as NC went 4-0 this week and won their own tournament on Saturday.

For a complete description, see Super Ballers 2

Biggest Surprises

BOYS

Neuqua Valley

The Wildcats put together a 4-1 run in the fourth quarter to come-from-behind and earn an 11-11 draw with #5 Brother Rice.

Lyons-Brother Rice

Speaking of draws involving Brother Rice, it might be more surprising that these two teams didn't finish in a tie like it seems like they have over the past few seasons. Upon further review, the teams finished in a tie at this tournament in 2008 and 2010. Lyons won 11-10 in this year's event.

GIRLS

Lockport Tournament

Mother McAuley avenged a loss to St Ignatius earlier in the week by beating them at Lockport on Saturday. They also lost to Neuqua Valley on the same day, while Neuqua would go on to lose to St Ignatius as well at the same tournament.
