Fenwick Tournament Report

By Aaron Brown

Fenwick hosts the 11th annual Mike Murphy Tournament this week, beginning on Thursday evening at 5:00pm and wrapping up with the final game of the first place bracket at 6:30pm on Saturday. Eight of the top ten teams are participating, while St Thomas Aquinas comes in from Florida to join an impressive cast of teams. Here is a closer look at what to expect on each day of the tournament:

Thursday Report

The Fenwick Tournament got underway on Thursday night, as Lyons, Loyola, Fenwick, and New Trier all earning preliminary round wins. Mother McAuley will look to bounce back from two narrow losses to Loyola and New Trier when the weekend comes around, while Fenwick will duel St Thomas for the top spot in the tournament's first group on Friday night.

Friday Report

St Ignatius started the weekend with an 8-5 win over Stevenson in the first game of the Fenwick Tournament. H-F followed that by holding off Evanston 6-4; the Wildkits also lost the nightcap to Stevenson 14-9. Meanwhile, Fenwick beat St Thomas 6-4 to earn their second win of the event.

Saturday Report

The third day of the tournament proved to be a hectic one from the start, as Mother McAuley shocked top-ranked Lyons 7-6 in the first game of the day. That set the stage for some intriguing results, including three draws...Loyola and New Trier finished in a 7-7 tie in a sectional final rematch from 2010; Mundelein and St Thomas Aquinas ended up even at 6-6; then Loyola and LT finished in a 7-7 draw on Saturday morning.

H-F beat St Ignatius 10-7 on Saturday morning, then lost 8-7 to Stevenson later in the afternoon. Meanwhile, the Wolfpack put an end to the preliminary round with a dominating 18-7 victory over Evanston.

Here is how the final round played out: Mother McAuley edged Evanston 10-8 the tenth place game. Mundelein beat both New Trier and Stevenson in the third place bracket. Lyons and St Ignatius both beat St Thomas Aquinas to close out the second place bracket. Fenwick earned victories over H-F and Loyola in the first place bracket to win the tournament.
