Week 6

Boys Tournament Report

By Aaron Brown

There were a total of five boys' tournaments over the weekend, including an out-of-state venture for both Fenwick and Stagg. Let's take a closer look at what went down over the weekend:

DeSmet Tournament

Fenwick went 5-0 at the DeSmet Tourney, beating Missouri's defending champions DeSmet 12-4 and then defeating SLUH in the title game 17-8 on Saturday night. In the championship game, the Friars scored the first five goals and jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the first period to run away with the victory. Connor Brown scored 6 goals, Matt Farmer added 4 scores, and Viken Huening put in 3 scores to lead Fenwick to their fifth out-of-state win of the weekend.

Meanwhile, Stagg dropped a morning decision to the top-ranked Friars 16-7 and were tipped by MICDS 12-11 in an afternoon game. They ended the tournament with a 12-7 win over Marquette in the seventh place game.

Brown, Farmer, and Dan Newell were named to the All-Tournament Team for the Friars, while Stagg's Juan Valdez was recognized for his efforts as well.

Lyons Tournament

The hosts improved to 17-1 on the season after winning all three of their weekend games to claim their own tournament title. The Lions held off St Ignatius 10-8 in the tourn opener on Friday, then earned a decisive victory over Stevenson to move on to Saturday's title game. LT defeated Loyola 14-5

Loyola finished in second place, earning wins over Oak Park and York over the weekend. St Ignatius cruised to a 17-4 victory over Oak Park in the third place game on Saturday, while the Patriots beat the Dukes 13-7 in the fifth place game.

Naperville Tournament

Naperville Central beat Mundelein 11-7 and Naperville North 15-6 on Saturday to finish the 'Best of the West' Tournament with a 4-0 record, the fourth straight time they have won the event. North beat Mundelein 7-6 to claim second place, while the Mustangs ended the proceedings with a 2-2 mark to finish in third place.

GBS took fourth place after beating Buffalo Grove 12-7 and outlasting Hinsdale Central in a 16-15 shootout finish. The Red Devils topped BG 14-11 to finish in fifth place.

New Trier Tournament

McHenry outscored New Trier by three goals in the final period to break a deadlock and win the NT Tournament's title game 11-8 over the hosts. McHenry also earned wins over Fremd and Lockport, while Jordan Palmer recorded 9 goals and Konrad VonMoltke totaled 7 scores as New Trier defeated Fremd 17-11 and edged Lockport 15-14 to start their own event.

The Porters finished in third place after holding off Fremd in the final game of the day for both teams.

Sandburg Tournament

The Eagles and North Stars both went 3-0 in the opening round of the Sandburg Tournament to advance to the title game in Orland Park. In the end, Sandburg won their second straight tournament title after winning an event at Naperville North last week, beating STC North 13-4.
