Quarterfinal #4: St Ignatius 10 Loyola 6

LINCOLNSHIRE, IL - The third time was indeed the charm for St Ignatius, as they defeated Loyola 10-6 for their straight straight win over their Catholic League rivals in 2011. This one mattered the most, as the Wolfpack moved on to the state semifinals to take on Stevenson and eliminated the Ramblers for state title contention in the process.

Things were close early, as a surprisingly offensive battle took place in the opening period, with Loyola's Brittany Wallace scoring an early goal before Ignatius bounced back with three straight goals. Insalaco scored two times and Fernandez added one goal in that span, giving the Wolfpack a slightly comfortable lead. Wallace scored her second to make it 3-2, then the teams traded goals before the period ended with Ignatius in front 4-3.

That's when things took a defensive turn, as neither team recorded a goal until the final minute of the half, when Kate Stelnicki scored a breakaway goal to give Ignatius a 5-3 lead at halftime. Things stayed defensive until more than halfway through the third period, when Loyola's Sarah Gross connected on an outside shot to trim the Wolfpack's advantage down to 5-4.

That was as close as Loyola would get, as Ignatius closed out the third period with a startling 4-0 run to put the game away. With 2:19 left in the quarter and the lead down to one, Insalaco scored a quick goal, Tammy Stelnicki scored two straight, and Kate Stelnicki ended the period with a breakaway goal in the final minute.

Meghan Murphy added some insurance for the Wolfpack with a fourth period goal, before Evan Swenson and Caitlin Sershon notched late goals to make the final score 10-6.

Insalaco scored 4 times, both Stelnicki's scored 2 goals, and Fernandez and Meghan Murphy each nicked a goal in the Ignatius' win. Gross and Wallace each scored a pair of goals for the Ramblers, while Sershon and Swenson each added one goal in the losing effort.

The Wolfpack will now face Stevenson in the sectional semifinals on Saturday morning.
