WEEKLY RECAPS

THE ILLPOLO REPORT

Week 6

The following is a summary of what took place during the sixth week of the season. This is not a complete list and we can only include a few people in this summary, but the purpose is to recognize a few of the best performances from each week.

Players To Watch

BOYS

Billy Barth (St Ignatius)

Nick Opfer (Niles West)

Przemyslaw Kowalczyk (Taft)

GIRLS

Danielle Patrick (Lindblom)

Rachel Chumbrook (Palatine)

Tegan Moore (Lyons)

For a complete description, see Players to Watch: Volume VI

Biggest Impact Plays

BOYS

Billy Barth (St Ignatius)

The Ignatius' freshman scored the final goal in sudden-death overtime to lift the Wolfpack past OPRF 10-9 on Saturday.

Matt Gullickson (Lane)

Gullickson scored 3 times in the final period to help Lane comeback from a 9-6 deficit to beat R-B 11-9.

GIRLS

Anna Tenny (H-F)

Tenny lofted the game-winning goal in from 7m as the Vikings beat New Trier 10-9 at the Fenwick Tournament on Saturday.

Gabby Chelette (Whitney Young)

Chelette notched the only goal in extra time as the Dolphins defeated Northside Prep 6-5 on Wednesday.

Megan Hofer (Andrew)

Hofer connected on the game-winner as time expired to lift the T-Bolts past LWE 10-9 on Thursday.

Jessica Cavaiani (Prospect)

Cavaiani recorded the game-winning goal with :13 left on the clock as Prospect stunned Lockport 7-6 at the StV Tourney.

Top Goalie Performances

BOYS

Logan Gizel (Hoffman)

The Hawks' goalkeeper recently returned from injury to make 11 saves and earn a shutout in an 11-0 win over Barrington.

Tommy McGuire (Fenwick)

The Friars'' goalkeeper made 42 saves in five games as the defending champs went 5-0 in Missouri and won the DeSmet Tourney, which included wins over MO's #1 and #2 teams.

GIRLS

Lisa Michalowski (Stevenson)

Michalowski earned a 5-0 shutout win over Neuqua Valley at the Fenwick Tournament on Friday and totaled 43 saves to help the Patriots finish in fourth place.

Sean Birkholz (Metea Valley)

Birkholz made a whopping 26 saves in the Warriors' 7-6 win over Wheeling in the title game of the Oak Park Tourney.

Biggest Surprises

BOYS

St Ignatius Beats Oak Park and Stevenson

A 2011 state qualifier beating two non-qualifiers shouldn't be surprising news, the Wolfpack have been struggling for a variety of reasons and posted a 5-12 record heading into the vaunted LT Tournament. The 'Pack responded with wins over both Oak Park and Stevenson to finish the event in third on Saturday.

STC East 10 St Patrick 7

Imagine you were from the past and you traveled ahead to 2012 and heard that a team from St Charles beat perennial water polo powerhouse St Patrick. Would you believe it? Well that JUST happened last week as Shaun Seuschek scored 3 times in the win for the Saints.

GIRLS

Lyons Stuns Fenwick 13-10

The Lions aggressively handed the defending champs their second loss of the season on Friday; while it shouldn't be THAT of a shock considering LT won state two years ago, it's always news when Fenwick loses and throws a major wrench into prognosticators hands considering these two are currently placed in the same sectional. Can we at least schedule this potential rematch at a different time than any other sectional final, please?

News and Notes

Illinois RULES Missouri

Fenwick beat the top-ranked teams in Missouri over the long weekend at the DeSmet Tournament. The Friars beat MO's defending champs SLUH in the semifinal round and topped Parkway West 10-4 in the title game.

Okay...NOW Spring Break Is Over

It looked like the Spring Break effects were over, but last week still saw several schools on break for the week. I feel this, as I spent the waning days of my break in a bomb shelter (aka...the Fenwick basement when the lights went out mid-game!). Anyways, NOW we should be back to full-on water polo schedule mode for three more weeks of the regular season.

What Don't We Know

We know the sectional hosts, placements, and brackets (at least we think so...looking at you IHSA). What else is left? The sectional seeds! That plays out on Thursday and should be finalized by Friday morning/afternoon. We will be able to paint a clear picture of the postseason in less than one week!

Super Ballers
