The following is a summary of what took place during the most recent week in water polo action in Illinois. This is not a complete list; the purpose is to recognize several of the best performances from across the state that have been reported.

Biggest Impact Plays

BOYS

Sam Orlin (Latin)

Orlin scored the eventual game-winning goal in overtime as the Romans outlasted Maine West 10-7 on Thursday night.

 

GIRLS

Lucy Renz (Mundelein)

Renz connected on the game-winning goal with twelve seconds remaining in regulation to send the Mustangs past Palatine 11-10 on Tuesday night

 

Maggie Hennigan (Mother McAuley)

Maggie Hennigan scored with 0:46 left in the third overtime to send the Mighty Macs past Lyons 7-6 on Wednesday night.

 

Nicole McCabe (LWE)

McCabe connected on the game-winning goal with two seconds left in overtime to send the Griffins past Bremen 12-11 on Wednesday night.

 

Zoe Salafatinos (Neuqua Valley)

Zoe Salafatinos scored the game-winning goal in the second period of overtime as Neuqua Valley earned a 9-7 comeback win over Waubonsie Valley.

 

Top Goalie Performances

BOYS

Jake Burke (LWC)

Burke saved 48 shots in the opening week to help the Knights post a 3-1 record to start the 2016 campaign.

 

Piers Braunrot (New Trier)

Braunrot made 30+ saves and earned four straight wins over Loyola, Mundelein, McHenry and St Ignatius to help New Trier win the Palatine Tournament over the weekend.

 

GIRLS

Betsy Zanocco (Meadows)

Zanocco made 45 saves at the Northside Tournament to help the Mustangs claim a second place finish at the event. She also made 8 saves in a win over Maine East earlier in the week.

 

Faith Vandercar (Naperville Central)

Vandercar allowed less than three goals per game in the opening week as the Redhawks started the 2016 season with a 5-0 record. She also recorded a shutout as Central won the Naperville North Tournament.

 

Olivia Everhart (Evanston)

Everhart totaled 60+ saves in five contests in the opening week to help the Wildkits jump out to a 4-1 record. She also dished out 7 assists and stopped 42 shots at the New Trier Tournament over the weekend.

 

Biggest Surprises

BOYS

Hinsdale Central & Lincoln-Way North

The Red Devils and Phoenix both had impressive showings at the Stagg Tournament; both teams went 3-0 in the early rounds before LWN beat HC 11-8 in the event's title game.

 

GIRLS

Hoffman Estates

The Hawks not only secured their first regular season win since 2013, they won back-to-back games over Andrew and Latin to improve to 2-2 after the opening week of the season.

 

Rolling Meadows

The Mustangs went 3-1 at the Northside Tournament as they have jumped out to their best start (4-2) in team history.

 

News and Notes

Lieberman Wins #300

Congratulations to Glenbrook South head coach Dave Lieberman, who won his 300th career game at the Conant Tournament as part of a 3-0 weekend for the Titans.

 

Sectional Locations

Be on the lookout for the IHSA to announce the sectional hosts for the 2016 postseason. The IHSA normally makes the announcement in mid-to-late March.
