Week 6

 

The following is a summary of what took place during the most recent week in water polo action in Illinois. This is not a complete list; the purpose is to recognize several of the best performances from across the state that have been reported.

Biggest Impact Plays

BOYS

Andrew Shashin (Stevenson)

Shashin drew an ejection and scored with a quick shot to help Stevenon complete their comeback by tying SLUH in the fourth quarter of the DeSmet Tournament title game. The Jr Bills led the Patriots 7-0 before Shashin helped mount a comeback. SLUH eventually won the contest 8-7.

 

Josh Frost (McHenry)
Frost scored the game-winning goal in the closing seconds of McHenry's 9-8 victory over STC North.

 

GIRLS

Allison Travetto (Stevenson)

Travetto scored the game-winner in sudden death overtime to send Stevenson past McAuley 12-11 on Saturday afternoon.

 

Emily Mathews/Alexis Anderson (H-F)

Mathews scored the go-ahead goal and Alexis Anderson scored the eventual game-winner as the Vikings outlasted Andrew 9-8 in overtime on Thursday.

 

Erin Muellerschoen (LWC)

Muellerschoen scored the game-winning goal with five seconds remaining in regulation to help the Knights beat LWN 13-12.

 

Frances Bauer (Mother McAuley)

Bauer scored the game-winner with less than thirty seconds left in regulation to send McAuley past Okemos 10-9.

 

Gracie Dix (Prospect)

Dix scored on a backhand shot in sudden-death overtime as Prospect edged past Wheeling 8-7.

 

Giselle Figueroa (Evanston)

Figueroa scored the game-winning goal with :40 remaining in regulation to lift Evanston over LWE 5-4 on Friday.

 

Nina Mantich (Stevenson)

Mantich scored a power play goal at the start of the third overtime to send the Wolfpack past Mother McAuley 10-9.

 

Shannon Forst (Fenwick)

Forst scored the game-winning goal just thirteen seconds into overtime as the Friars beat Hudsonville 11-10.

 

Top Goalie Performances

BOYS

Kent Emden (Naperville Central)

Emden posted 4 wins, made 46 saves, earned one shutout and allowed just two goals per game as the Redhawks beat Buffalo Grove, GBS, Hinsdale Central and Naperville North to win their own tournament.

 

Mike Graham (Shepard)

Graham blocked more than 50 shots as Shepard went 4-0 to win their own tournament over the weekend.

 

Zak Keper (Fremd)

Keper allowed less than 4 goals per game for the Vikings as they went 4-0 to win the Waubonsie Valley Tournament.

 

GIRLS

Betsy Zanocco (Meadows)

Zanocco let in just 2 goals in 4 games for the Mustangs as they claimed the Elk Grove Tournament title.

 

Ellie Connors (Barrington)

Connors made 23 saves in helping Barrington pick up a pair of wins over Andrew and York en route to a second place finish at the York Tournament. She also made 12 stops in a pair of MSL contests against Conant and Fremd.

 

Emma Jeronimus (Fremd)

Jeronimus racked up 44 saves in 3 games as the Vikings placed second at the Mundelein Tournament on Saturday. She also made 19 saves in a 7-2 win over Barrington and stopped 6 shots in a 4-2 victory over Palatine.

 

Kaitlyn Peterson (Oak Park)
Curry led the Huskies' offense with 16 goals, Cronin notched 9 scores and Peterson made 26 saves and allowed 4 goals per game as Oak Park won the Mundelein Tournament on Saturday.

 

Lauren Burns (Stevenson)

Burns made a total of 64 saves over the weekend to help the Patriots (16-1) finish 4-0 at the their own tournament against three of Michigan's top teams and Mother McAuley. The senior also made 17 steals and contributed 11 assists in the four game span.

 

Olivia Everhart (Evanston)

Everhart made 40 saves and allowed just 2 goals per game to help Evanston claim the Palatine Tournament after the squad beat Conant, LWE, Palatine and STC North. She also recorded her fifth shutout of the season in a 2-0 victory over Conant on Saturday afternoon.

 

Tess O'Brien (Palatine)

Anderson led the Pirates with 5 goals while O'Brien totaled 39 saves as both players helped lead the squad to a second place finish at their own tournament.

 

Biggest Surprises

BOYS

Prospect

The Knights earned an impressive 11-7 win over previously undefeated Wheeling in an MSL East contest. They also finished the Sandburg Tournament with a pair of wins and a fourth place finish.

 

GIRLS

Maine West

The Warriors handed previously undefeated Highland Park their first loss en route to the Vernon Hills Tournament title on Saturday afternoon. They also beat Hoffman, Lake Forest and the hosts plus earned a win over Maine East during the week.

 

News and Notes

Regular Season 2/3 Over

Six weeks have gone by rapidly as we enter the final stretch of the regular season with the postseason lurking around the corner.

 

Sectional Seeds

The seeding for the sectional playoffs will be determined at the end of the upcoming week and will be posted as soon as they are announced by the IHSA. According to the IHSA web site: "Water Polo seeds will be posted about 4 pm on Thursday, April 21, 2016."

 

Player Spotlight Section

The new PLAYER SPOTLIGHT section of the web site utilizes various formats to showcase current and former players. More than 25 current and former players were recognized in various forms this past week. Any player interested in being featured should submit pictures as quickly as possible.

 

Team Spotlight Section

The new TEAM SPOTLIGHT section of the site utilizes various formats to showcase current and former teams in a variety of situations. More than a dozen teams were profiled in various forms this past week. Any team interested in being featured should submit pictures as soon as possible.

 

Submit Photos

In order to be included on either the player or team spotlight page, send a photo using e-mail, Twitter or any other method as more profiles will be made at random throughout the rest of the season.

 

Maggie Steffens Appearance

Team USA Water Polo player Maggie Steffens will be in attendance at Tuesday night's West Suburban Conference girls' game between #6 Oak Park and #9 Lyons. The event takes place at 6:00pm at Oak Park.
