St Ignatius Holds Off Fenwick in MCAC Classic

By Aaron Brown

St Ignatius remained perfect in 2015 after going to Fenwick and holding off the Friars 6-5 in a key Catholic League contest on Wednesday evening. The Wolfpack jumped out to a 2-0 lead, responded to a 3-0 run by the hosts by pulling back ahead by halftime, then held off a late rally to hold off the defending champions by a one-goal margin.

Tara White scored the game-opening goal in the first minute after an ejection before Stephania Lopez added another score later in the period. Catie Wallace got Fenwick on the board with just under one minute left in the frame, then Wallace scored an equalizer with fifteen seconds left in the first quarter.

The Friars continued their run (3-0) early in the second quarter when Clare Durkin netted her first goal, but Nina Mantich evened things up at 3-3 around the midpoint of the period to stop the Wolfpack's drought. Then, as the first half came to a close, Diana Fernandez scored at the buzzer to put St Ignatius back on top 4-3 at the break.

The Wolfpack quickly took a two goal lead at the start of the second half on a goal by Karen Juarez. Eryn Kulik got the hosts to within a goal midway through the third period. Neither team could score again until Juarez notched her second score midway through the fourth quarter to put SICP ahead 6-4 with 4:25 left in regulation. Shannon Forst cut the lead to 6-5 with 1:25 left, but the Friars were unable to score again and the Wolfpack finished with the one-goal victory.

Karen Juarez notched two scores while Diana Fernandez, Nina Mantich, Stephanie Lopez and Tara White each scored once in the victory. Jenny Stelnicki also blocked thirteen shots in the win.

Catie Wallace scored two goals, the trio of Clare Durkin, Eryn Kulik and Shannon Forst scored once and Anna Sullivan made fourteen saves in the one-goal loss.
