Week 1

 

The following is a summary of what took place during the first week of the season. This is not a complete list and we can only include a few people in this summary, but the purpose is to recognize a few of the best performances from each week.

Biggest Impact

BOYS

David Sekula (Lyons)

The Lions' senior recorded 6 goals as Lyons went to Oak Park and earned a 12-8 win over the preseason's second-ranked team.

 

Mark Alvarado (St Ignatius)

Alvarado scored 20 goals at the Palatine Tournament to help the Wolfpack finish 4-0.

GIRLS

Nancy Patron (Curie)

Scored the game-winning goal in overtime to lift the Condors past Lane 7-6.

 

Jamie Pappanastos (Sandburg)

Scored 6 times, including the game-winner in the closing seconds of an 11-10 win over New Trier.

Top Goalie Performances

BOYS

Dan Sommerfeld (Palatine)

The Pirates' goalkeeper blocked 14 shots in an 11-10 win over McHenry, saved 8 shots in an 8-5 win over Loyola, and recorded 9 saves and 6 steals in a 12-9 win over Latin.

 

Robbie O'Brien (Stevenson)

O'Brien stopped 15 shots as Stevenson hung on for a 9-8 win over Evanston on Tuesday night.

 

GIRLS

Ashley McGhee (Lane)

McGhee made 18 saves and did not allow a goal in a shootout as Lane defeated Conant 6-4 in the final game of the Conant Tournament.

 

Devin Green (Marian)

The Spartans' goaltender recorded 82 saves and allowed only 6 goals per game in five contests in the opening week of the season.

 

EB Keeve (Waubonsie)

Keeve totaled 15 saves, 7 steals, and 6 assists in Waubonsie Valley's 10-3 win over Oak Park.

 

Biggest Surprises

BOYS

Palatine

The Pirates posted an impressive 3-1 record at their own tournament over the weekend, which included solid wins over Latin, McHenry, and Mundelein and sees them move into the Top 10 (#9) after the opening week.

 

GIRLS

Bremen

The Red Jaguars picked up where they left off last season even after losing several productive seniors. They earned a surprise 18-17 win over LWC on the opening night of the season.

 

Hinsdale Central

The Red Devils have looked impressive in collecting three straight wins to start the season. Colleen Moran and Olivia Garrett have helped lead the team to a 3-0 record after one week, including wins over Morton, Hoffman, and Stagg.

 

News and Notes

Regular Season Action Picks Up

The regular season gets into full swing this week, with 25+ games slated for Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday this week.

 

Fenwick Tournament Loaded

The Fenwick Tournament (boys) also runs from Thursday to Saturday and features nearly half of the Top 25 teams in the state of Illinois.
