State Tournament Ballers

 

The following Ballers were chosen based on performances in Saturday's semifinal and final rounds. For selections from the quarterfinal round, see the following links:

BOYS

Connor Brown (Fenwick)

Brown tallied 3 scores in Fenwick's 16-9 title game win over St Ignatius and chipped in with 2 scores in a 14-2 semifinal round victory over Sandburg. He totaled 9 scores at the event over the weekend.

 

Dan Newell (Fenwick)

Newell stopped 15 shots in Fenwick's two Saturday wins over Sandburg and St Ignatius and allowed just 2 goals to the Eagles in the semifinal round.

 

Matt Farmer (Fenwick)

Farmer scored 10 goals at the state tournament, leading the Friars with 4 scores in their 16-9 title game win over St Ignatius and added 2 goals in a 14-2 victory over Sandburg in the semifinal round.

 

Viken Huening (Fenwick)

Huening led the Friars with 7 goals in a 14-2 triumph over Sandburg in the semifinals and put in 2 scores in the team's 16-9 title game win over St Ignatius.

 

Mark Alvarado (St Ignatius)

Alvarado scored 16 goals at the state tournament, with none bigger than the game-winner he scored in closing seconds of the Wolfpack's 10-9 win over Loyola in the semifinals. He scored 7 of the team's 10 goals in that game, while adding 5 goals in the 16-9 title game loss to Fenwick.

 

Charlie Dowdle (Loyola)

Dowdle recorded 12 goals over the weekend, including all 4 of Loyola's goals in the first-half of a 9-5 win over Sandburg in the consolation game on Saturday. He added another goal in the second half and also notched 3 scores in the team's 10-9 semifinal loss to St Ignatius.

 

Tony Rogina (Sandburg)

Rogina made several key plays to hold Loyola scoreless for the first ten minutes of the consolation game, including a penaly shot save in the second period with Sandburg ahead 1-0. He was instrumental in the team's run to a fourth-place finish at the event.

 

 

 

GIRLS

Annie Collins (Fenwick)

The Fenwick senior recorded 8 goals in the state tourney while leading her team to a state title with a 4-goal effort in a 9-6 final game win over Stevenson.

 

Cara Borkovec (Fenwick)

Borkovec helped set the tone for the Friars, as she scored a key goal in an 8-4 semifinal win over McAuley, then scored 2 times in Fenwick's 9-6 title game victory over Stevenson.

 

Mackenzie Bonk (Fenwick)

Bonk allowed less than 6 goals per game in three state tournament wins, saving 28 shots in wins over H-F, McAuley, and Stevenson.

 

Karen Lowry (Stevenson)

Lowry helped lead the Patriots to a second-place finish with 8 goals at the state tournament, including the game-winner in overtime in an 8-7 win over Naperville Central. She also scored 3 times in a the title game, a 9-6 loss to Fenwick.

 

Cheyenne Montijo (Stevenson)

Montijo totaled 7 goals at the state tournament and led the team with 3 scores in a 9-7 semifinal victory over Ignatius.

 

Lisa Michalowski (Stevenson)

Michalowski recorded 42 saves in leading the Patriots to a second-place finish at the state tournament and came up with several awe-inspiring saves in Stevenson's overtime win over Naperville Central on Thursday night.

 

Becky Insalaco (St Ignatius)

Insalaco totaled 8 goals at the state tournament, scoring 3 times in the semifinals against Stevenson and adding a key goal in the Wolfpack's 12-4 victory over McAuley to help the team end the tournament in third place.

 

Kate Stelnicki (St Ignatius)

Stelnicki scored 4 goals and made 13 steals in a 12-4 win over McAuley in the consolation game and totaled 6 scores at the state tournament.

 

Stephanie Fernandez (St Ignatius)

Fernandez poured in 5 goals in a 12-4 victory over McAuley in the third-place game and also notched 2 scores in the Wolfpack's 9-7 semifinal loss to Stevenson.

 

Vicky Arciniega (McAuley)

Arciniega tallied 6 goals at the state tournament to help the Mighty Macs end the season with a fourth-place finish at the event.
