PERIOD 1

-Stevenson starts with it but a double team on Shashin leads to a turnover

-Liam Holzer returns the favor with a steal on the other end

-Shashin draws an ejection and Divanyan finds Sokolsky open on the right wing for the game's first goal

-Both defenses force turnovers as we approach the mid-point of the first period

-Sokolsky gets open for a 1-on-1 breakaway and slips a shot just inside the left post; 2-0 Stevenson

-Gilani makes a save on Birmingham's attempt from inside 5m

-Whalen tries a shot from outside 5m after an ejection but his attempt is blocked out of bounds

-Alex Kapecki forces a turnover on one end and Alex Divanyan scores from the left post on the other side

-The period comes to an end with Gilani making a save and Sokolsky hitting the crossbar from 5m

PERIOD 2

-Bachler has a great look from the right side to start the period but Gilani extends to make the save

-The teams trade possessions without any great looks at goal...

-...that is, until Kevin Kenny elevates to make a crucial save

-Rice forces a turnover but they get called for an offensive foul before they can setup the offense

-Sokolsky recovers a loose ball, Stephens hits the post, but Kurt Holzer puts in the rebound goal

-Gilani makes another key save and Divanyan finds Kapecki open for a goal from 5m

-Another save by Gilani...this time he passes ahead to Divanyan who scores a nifty breakaway goal

-Michael Taiberg gets open for a counterattack goal and Stevenson pulls ahead 7-0 late in the half

-Brennan Russell finally gets the Crusaders on the board with just over one minute left in the half

-Taiberg responds almost immediately on the other end from 7m; 8-1 Stevenson

-Stevenson makes a stop and Kapecki nets his second score of the half to make it 9-1

PERIOD 3

-Kenny makes a save to start the period for the Crusaders, who take their time setting up the offense

-Stevenson forces a turnover, but the Crusaders return the favor on the other end

-Gilani tips a shot off the crossbar on one end, while Kenny blocks a shot with his chin on the other end

-Bachler draws an ejection and James Ryan earns a penalty shot...Birmingham hits the post twice!

-Moments later, Kapecki hits the crossbar and the ball lands on the goalline and Kenny pushes it away

-Long range shot from Russell is turned away by Gilani

-Luke Gable-Preze hits the crossbar on the other end before the Crusaders pick up the loose ball

-Bachler scores the first goal of the half for Rice with just over two minutes remaining in period three

-Divanyan answers for the Patriots, scoring from outside seven meters

-Birmingham fights for a loose ball at two meters and draws a penalty...Bachler connects on the free shot!

-Shashin fights for a loose ball at two meters before finally slamming home a close range shot

-Gilani makes a save, Kenny comes out of the net to earn a steal, Rice draws an ejection...

-...but Gilani blocks Russell's shot as the period comes to a close

STEVENSON 11 BROTHER RICE 3

 

PERIOD 4

-Neither team can get anything going in the opening two minutes of the fourth period

-Whalen opens the scoring in the final period after dropping a shot in off the crossbar from seven meters

-Gilani makes a save and fights off Russell for the loose ball in front of the net

-Timeout (4:04 remaining)

-Divanyan earns a steal, Sokolsky finds Liam Holzer on the breakaway but Kenny blocks his shot

-Sokolsky converts a penalty shot as Stevenson takes a 12-4 lead

-James Ryan scores to cut the lead to 12-5, then Andrew Szczepaniak scores for Rice the next time down

-The shot clock expires on Stevenson as the teams enter the final minute of the game

-Ryan adds another goal as the game heads under :30 left

-Stevenson runs out the clock on a 12-7 quarterfinal victory

Stevenson 12 Brother Rice 7

Alex Divanyan and Mitchell Sokolsky both registered 3 goals and Shaurya Gilani made 15 saves to help Stevenson beat Brother Rice 12-7. Alex Kapecki and Michael Taiberg both scored 2 times and Andrew Shashin and Kurt Holzer each added a goal in the win for the Patriots. James Ryan and Matt Bachler led the Crusaders with 2 goals and the trio of Andrew Szczepaniak, Brennan Russell, and Dan Whalen each scored once in the loss for Rice. Kevin Kenny also made 12 saves for Brother Rice in the losing cause.
