THE ILLPOLO REPORT

Week 3

The following is a summary of what took place during the most recent week in water polo action in Illinois. This is not a complete list; the purpose is to recognize several of the best performances from across the state that have been reported.

Krzysztof Maniewski (Maine East)

Omar Gomez (DLS)

GIRLS

Caily Friel (Andrew)

Lauren Barrett (New Trier)

Biggest Impact Plays

BOYS

Max Yusim (Niles West)

Yusim's two overtime goals helped seal the Wolves' 12-9 win over DLS in the title game of the Niles West Tournament on Saturday night.

GIRLS

Aimee Schaaf (LWE)

Schaaf scored the game-tying and game-winning goals on Friday night in a 7-6 win over Andrew, helping the Griffins advance to the title game of their own event, where they beat LWC 10-0 on Saturday.

Marti Hale (Northside)

Hale notched the game-winning goal in the final period of Northside's 6-5 victory over Whitney Young on Thursday.

Top Goalie Performances

BOYS

Collin Bawolek (STC North)

Bawolek earned a shutout on Tuesday in a 14-0 victory over Hinsdale South and followed that up by allowing only 2 goals in Thursday's 14-2 win over rival STC East.

Matt Lefler (Niles West)

Lefler was a vital component in the Wolves' 4-0 run at their own tournament; he totaled 13 saves and 5 steals in Niles' 12-9 overtime win over DLS in the title game and also made 10 saves in an 11-8 comeback win over Waubonsie Valley.

GIRLS

Jenny Stelnicki (St Ignatius)

Stelnicki blocked 43 shots, allowed less than 3 goals per game, earned 4 wins, and helped the Wolfpack win their own tournament over the weekend.

Jill Connolly (LWE)

Connolly made 26 saves, earned a shutout, and helped the Griffins win their own tournament on Saturday.

Biggest Surprises

BOYS

DeLaSalle

DLS stunned Brother Rice 9-5 to shake up the Catholic League standings and nearly upset Niles West before falling in overtime in the title game of the Wolves' own event.

GIRLS

Waubonsie Valley

The Warriors had not won a game in 2014 heading into the weekend, but they earned victories over Buffalo Grove and Northside plus earned a draw with Marian to finish 2-1-1 at the St Ignatius Tournament.

News and Notes

Sectional Assignments???

We've waited two weeks. The IHSA has still not announced the sectional assignments for the 2014 playoffs. They claim that March 15 is the usual posting date on their web site and have actually posted them by March 22 in the last few years, so the reason for the delay is unknown. Stay tuned...again.

Spring Break???

Some teams have wrapped up their break, some are just beginning, some have to wait another week. It's ultimately hard to figure out which teams are at full strength, which schools are in session, and so on and so forth.

Super Ballers

BOYS

Kyle Patt (Niles West)

Max Yusim (Niles West)

GIRLS

Aimee Schaff (LWE)
