Week 9

 

The following is a summary of what took place during the most recent week in water polo action in Illinois. This is not a complete list; the purpose is to recognize several of the best performances from across the state that have been reported.

Emily Westlove (Naperville Central)

Melissa Barrios (Bremen)

 

Biggest Impact Plays

BOYS

Josh Gronwold (Oak Park)

Gronwold's goal in the final minute helped Oak Park stun Lyons 8-7 in the West Suburban Conference title game.

 

Mark Hoffman (Bradley)

Hoffman connected on the game-winning goal in sudden death overtime to lift Bradley over LWW 15-14 on Monday.

 

Tom Baker (Loyola)

Baker supplied the game-winning goal in the closing stages of Loyola's 9-8 victory over Fenwick in the Catholic League championship game.

 

GIRLS

Argelia Diaz (Wheeling)

Diaz scored the game-winning goal in the second overtime period of Wheeling's 11-10 win over Conant in the MSL title game on Thursday.

 

Colleen Barron (Fenwick)

Barron grabbed her own rebound after hitting the post and scored in the final minute to send Fenwick past St Ignatius 8-7 in the Catholic League finals.

 

Fran Williamson (Mother McAuley)

Williamson sprayed a shot from outside seven meters into the top corner that ended up as the game-winning goal as Mother McAuley defeated Loyola 11-10 on Saturday.

 

Maddy Demaret (Conant)

Demaret sent the MSL title game to overtime after scoring a goal from mid-pool at the buzzer at the end of regulation in the MSL title game.

 

Top Goalie Performances

BOYS

Matt Lefler (Niles West)

Lefler averaged 10 saves, 5 steals, and 3 assists to help the Wolves win their own event with victories over Maine East, Evanston, and Lockport.

 

Trevor Prince (Loyola)

Prince blocked 33 shots, made 10 steals, and allowed 7 goals per game as the Ramblers won the Catholic League title with a 3-0 record.

 

GIRLS

Becky Callen (Stevenson)

Callen recorded 33 saves in wins over LWC, NC and Neuqua to help the Patriots win their own tournament on Saturday. She also blocked 10 shots in a win over Waubonsie Valley earlier in the week.

 

Kim Butler (Palatine)

Butler made 17 saves and earned a 7-0 shutout win over Prospect in Monday night's MSL Crossover contest.

 

Lexi Buglio (Fenwick)

The Friars' goalkeeper came up big in several key situations in wins over Loyola and St Ignatius on Saturday as Fenwick won the MCAC Tournament. She also supplied a handful of key assists, including a perfect outlet pass to Catie Wallace that helped the Friars mount a comeback in the title game.

 

Olivia Everhart (Evanston)

Everhart made 17 saves and allowed just 7 goals in wins over GBN and Maine East as the sophomore helped the Wildkits win the CSL Tournament title over the weekend.

 

Biggest Surprises

BOYS

DeLaSalle

The Meteors showed that they are primed and ready to make a push for a state tournament berth after they beat St Patrick 12-11 in overtime in the MCAC Tournament.

 

GIRLS

Glenbrook North & Maine East

The Spartans and Blue Demons both earned wins over the top seed (New Trier) at next week's GBS Sectional during Week 9.

 

News and Notes

The Regular Season Has Concluded...

The hectic final weekend in a hectic season has finally come to an end, with several teams crowned as champions in their respective conferences.

 

...and the Postseason Begins!

In less than 24 hours, the postseason gets underway and there will be wall-to-wall water polo from Monday through Saturday night during Week 10 of the season.
