Entry #1a

The Colorado Trip, Part I

Posted August 11, 2011, 3:20am by Aaron Brown

When I nominated Chris Fetterman for a job as a coach at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado for a water polo camp, I never imagined that it would turn into one of the most eventful weeks of our lives. For one thing, I had already attended in a previous year so I wasn't planning to attend, but even after being asked to go at the last minute, I would have thought most of our stories and experiences would have to deal with water polo practices and sitting on a plane. Little did I know...

The early part of the trip should have been a signal. Chris has never paid the $100 camp fee for room and board, while I had never been asked to do so since I was asked at the last minute. Chris received a call from the director, Mike something-or-other, telling him to send it, but he never did. So as we are on a shuttle bus taking us to the training center, neither of us knew whether or not we would have a room. We spent the 20-minute drive trying to figure out how we would live on the streets of Colorado for a week. Not only did neither of us pay, but I never even sent in the required information to register. So it wasn't a surprise that I wasn't on the camp roster at all. Somehow when we got there to check in, we were miraculously both good to go and the room assignments paired us together (we shared the room with a crazy Mormom from Utah, but more on that later).

Main highlight of the trip:

Olympic speedskater Apolo Ohno lived at the OTC, so he was actually dining at the same place we were. He ordered an omelet before me, but was flirting with some girls when his order came up. Seizing the opportunity, I claimed his omelet and walked away, just so I could say I stole Apolo Ohno's omelet.
