Rescue Me Shows Signs of Life With Best Performance of the Season

Posted August 11, 2011, 3:30am by Aaron Brown

It's been quite awhile since I've seen a perfect episode of Rescue Me. Perfect for this show doesn't have to mean epic or groundbreaking, it just has to make sure the focus is on the right topics and avoids the stuff of daytime soap operas. In that case, the August 10 episode of Rescue Me was perfect.

The episode focused on the firehouse and the crew for nearly the entire episode, which is the reason why most viewers tuned into the show in the first place. Tommy Gavin was suspended for thirty days for comments he made on national television (culminating in him flicking off the camera), so he starts the episode getting the news that he's suspended and has to turn in his badge and jacket. Nearly all of the crew supports Tommy by making fun of the department administrators, then they begin plotting a way to "fight fire with fire" as crew leader Needles states. All except for Franco, who is ticked off that Tommy's outburst is going to expose everyone else's issues.

From there, the majority of the episode is geared around finding a way to get the television reporter from continuing to snoop around and disgrace the crew members, while the crew also uses a creative way to get the fire department administrators from suspending Tommy.

The rest of the episode features a bar fight between fire and police department members, Tommy getting his hands on a sex tape of the television reporter, and Shiela doing her best work on the show in a long time to get the situation turned in the crew's favor.

Even the filler parts of the episode, like Tommy dealing with his whining family, was put to rest when he basically told them to sit down and shut up and he finally took control of that situation. Hopefully that brings an end to any scenes involving the females in his family and their terrible acting, but even that can be dealt with properly if Tommy's character doesn't act like he has in the previous two seasons.

With that episode, the season has taken a turn in the right direction that should hopefully continue for the next month. There have been way too many scenes that require the fast-forward button for this show, so hopefully those are gone and we can get back to the business of the fire department and Tommy's crew, because that is what loyal fans want to see. Not a wedding involving Tommy's daughter and Black Sean...oh wait, we still have to deal with that.
