Conant 9 Hoffman Estates 8 (OT)

Paul Christiansen drove towards the net and scored with two seconds remaining in the second overtime as Conant stunned rival Hoffman Estates 9-8 in two overtime periods on Tuesday night. The teams traded leads throughout the game, with Hoffman scoring the final two goals in regulation to tie the game at 8-8. Both teams missed golden opportunities to score the game-winner in the overtime periods, but Christiansen drove towards the middle and took a perfect pass from Brett Krahn and found the top left corner to send the crowd into pandemonium. Hoffman Estates was looking for its' first-ever win against Conant since the Cougars joined the sport of water polo two years ago.

 

Krahn and Kurt Zumpf each scored four goals for the Cougars in the win, while Chris Skalon tallied four scores for the Hawks. Jim Ashbrook made a whopping 26 saves in the losing effort for Hoffman.

Conant used a 7-0 run to start the game and led from start to finish in a 15-6 romp over rival Hoffman Estates in their season opener. Ashley Rebou started the scoring in the opening seconds, driving towards the goal and scoring on a left-handed shot from two-meters. Rachel Majercik drove towards the goal on the following play and found the back of the net from in front to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead. Goalie Julia Schumann made a save and found Jacquie Cobb open on the break, and she hit a shot from the right wing to make the score 3-0. Conant hole defender Erin Bickus made a field block on the next play and assisted Majercik on her second goal of the period to increase the lead to 4-0. Later in the period, Rebou made a steal in transition and assisted Cobb on her second goal, and Bickus picked

up her second steal of the quarter and assisted Rebou on a transition goal to increase the Conant lead to 6-0.-Rebou picked up a loose ball, passed to Cobb on the right wing, and she found Majercik streaking towards the net to score her third goal to make the score 7-0. After Hoffman finally got on the board late in the period, Cobb scored on a pass from Majercik in the waning seconds of the opening quarter to give Conant an 8-1 lead.

Taylor Olson scored twice in the second quarter for the Cougars, who held a 10-3 advantage at the break. Majercik scored twice in the third quarter, while Bickus went coast-to-coast after a steal for her first goal of the game. She followed that with a steal and assisted Rebou on her third goal of the game to make the score 13-4. Shealyn Boland added a powerplay goal to make the score 14-4 with just one quarter to play. Olson scored her third goal in the last quarter, as Conant went on to a 16-6 victory.

Majercik led Conant with four goals, while Rebou, Cobb, and Olson each recorded a hat trick (3 goals). #4 and #6 led Hoffman in the losing cause with two goals apiece.
