Evanston 9 Mundelein 7

March 9, 2005

Alex Negronida scored five goals and added an assist and goalie Kevin Paulson made 23 saves as #5 Evanston held off #3 Mundelein 9-7 on Wednesday night.

-

In the opening quarter, Negronida found Tim Fodor with a pass from the left to right wing on a powerplay, and Fodor found the corner of the net to give the Wildkits a 1-0 lead. Moments later, Negronida scored a transition goal from the right wing to put Evanston ahead 2-0. Mundelein responded quickly, as Brandon Schawel took an entry pass from Geoff Schott and slammed a backhand into the goal to cut the lead to 2-1. Negronida scored on a shot from outside seven meters with one second left in the period to give Evanston a 3-1 advantage heading to the second quarter.

-

The Wildkits increased their lead to 4-1 with a powerplay goal by Magee Clegg in the second quarter, but Mundelein's Greg Peck scored two straight goals to slice the lead to 4-3 late in the first half. Evanston's Tom Doyle scored with four seconds left to make the score 5-3 in favor of Evanston at the break.

-

Peck started the second half with a score from the point to make the score 5-4, but Evanston responded as Negronida got his own rebound and scored his third goal to make it 6-4. Schawel scored to make it 6-5, but Negronida scored from outside seven meters to make it 7-5 later in the quarter. Peck found the net from outside seven meters to make the score 7-6 with 1:20 to go in the third period, but it would be as close as the Mustangs would get.

-

Evanston extended their lead with two quick goals from Negronida and Andrew Olsen in the fourth quarter to jump ahead 9-6. Peterson scored on a lob shot from the left wing to get Mundelein to within two goals at 9-7, but Paulson made a brilliant save on a two meter shot in the final minute to preserve the win for the Wildkits.
