Fenwick 16 Mother McAuley 3

Fenwick turned in a dominant performance in a state title rematch against #5 Mother McAuley, building up a 10-0 halftime lead en route to a 16-3 victory on Wednesday night. Farren Rixter scored eight goals and Keely Baldwin recorded four goals and three assists to lift #1 Fenwick over the Mighty Macs.

Erin Leary set up the first Fenwick score with 6:08 to play in the first quarter, making a steal and drawing an ejection to set up Baldwin's powerplay goal. Alison Pavlik (4 assists) found Christina Romano with a beautiful pass from the right flat to the left wing to make the score 2-0, and Rixter scored the next three Fenwick goals to give the Friars a 5-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Baldwin scored her second goal on a powerplay early in the second quarter, and Rixter scored three consecutive goals from two meters out to give Fenwick a 9-0 advantage. Pavlik found Baldwin for a goal from seven meters out to make the score 10-0 at halftime.

In the second half, Romano tallied her second goal on a lob shot after a steal to make the score 11-0. Lily Gonzalez got McAuley on the board with a score from two meters, but Rixter added her seventh goal and drew a four meter penalty shot after a rebound of her own miss. Baldwin slammed home the penalty shot to put Fenwick ahead 13-1. Rixter scored once more before exiting the game, while Amy Jackson scored two straight goals to get McAuley to within 14-3. Katelyn Finn and Maggie Cahill each added goals for Fenwick to round at the scoring at 16-3.

Other notes:

  • Laurel McCarthy totaled 9 saves and added an assist in goal for the Friars.

  • Both teams are headed to the Mundelein Tournament this weekend.
