Mother McAuley 8 St Ignatius 5

March 21, 2005

#1 Mother McAuley scored four unanswered goals in the first quarter en route to an 8-5 win over #4 St Ignatius on Monday night. Maggie Wood started the scoring in the first minute of the game, and Lily Gonzalez followed that with a goal of her own to put the Mighty Macs ahead 2-0. Both girls added one more goal before the first period ended, as McAuley was ahead 4-0.

Gonzalez scored the first goal of the second quarter and gave Mother McAuley a 5-0 advantage. Megan Hybinette scored to put Ignatius on the board, but Lily Cortez gave the momentum back to McAuley with her first goal to make the score 6-1. Hybinette added a goal right before the half ended to get Ignatius to within 6-2.

In the third quarter, Nora Kennelly scored her first goal to cut the lead down to 6-3. Marian Martinez had the answer for McAuley, extending the lead back to four goals. Kennelly tallied her second goal one minute later to get St Ignatius within striking distance (7-4), but they failed to capitalize on scoring opportunities for the final three minutes of the period.

Neither team allowed a goal in the first three minutes of the final quarter, but Gonzalez took advantage of a powerplay opportunity to score her fourth goal with 3:35 left to play to give McAuley an 8-4 advantage. Kennelly scored from outside of seven meters with under two minutes to play, but that was as close at Ignatius could get, as McAuley emerged with an 8-5 victory.

Gonzalez led all scorers with three goals, while Wood had two and Martinez and Cortez each added one goal. Kennelly scored a hat trick (3 goals) for Ignatius while Hybinette added two tallies in the loss.
