Lyons 7 Evanston 6 (Boys)

March 22, 2005

-

#5 Lyons remained undefeated with a 7-6 win over #3 Evanston on Tuesday night. With the score tied at 4-4 in the third quarter, Mark Lakis' shot from the left wing with three seconds left in the third put Lyons ahead 5-4, and they would never relinquish the lead. Evanston got to within 6-5 on a backhand goal by Andrew Olsen, but Scott Nemecek drew a key ejection with 1:23 remaining in the game, and Lyons was able to capitalize and increase the lead to 7-5. Evanston's Alex Negronida scored with eight seconds left, but it was too little, too late for the Wildkits. Lyons' goalie Derrick Brace came up big in the final period, stopping several difficult shots, including a lob from Chris Waller with 0:38 left to play which could have given Evanston a chance to tie the game.

New Trier 11 Mundelein 9 (Boys)

March 22, 2005

-

#9 New Trier upset #4 Mundelein in Winnetka on Tuesday. Mundelein jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but the Trevians responded with a big second quarter to take a 6-3 lead. Chris Soper was left wide open in front of the net after a steal to give New Trier their biggest lead at 8-3 in the third, before the Mustangs got two goals from Greg Peck and one from Brian Sheehan before the quarter ended to cut the lead to 8-6. That was as close as Mundelein would get, as the teams traded goals in the final period. Andrew Peterson got Mundelein to within two with a goal on a two-man advantage with 3:13 remaining, but Soper's rebound goal clinched the victory for the Trevians. Greg Peck scored for Mundelein in the final minute, but the Mustangs were unable to get the ball back and New Trier emerged with an 11-9 victory.

New Trier 8 Mundelein 7 (Girls)

After taking a 6-1 lead, the #11 New Trier held off the #Mustangs for an 8-7 win. Mundelein had a chance with just under five seconds to go, but were denied on a two-meter shot as time expired.
