Sandburg 12 Oak Park 3 (Girls)

Fenwick Tournament

April 1, 2005

-
Sandburg beat Oak Park for the second time this season in the opening round of the Fenwick Tournament on Friday night. The Eagles raced out to a 4-1 lead with four powerplay goals in the opening quarter, and they never looked back in a 12-3 win.

Amanda Cody drew an ejection to help Sandburg strike first, as Megan Mulhull scored the powerplay goal for a 1-0 lead. The Huskies responded, as Val Poulos scored on a drive to tie the game at 1-1. The Eagles scored the next three goals of the period, starting with Ami Czerwinski's first score of the game after Cody drew her second straight ejection. Czerwinski then assisted Hannah Ciurej with a powerplay goal on a pass from the right wing to the left post, as Sandburg took a 3-1 lead. They would later increase the advantage to 4-1 when Amanda Cody hooked up with her sister Sam Cody for a powerplay goal before the end of the period.

The Eagles picked up where they left off in the second quarter, as Czerwinski got her second assist with a pass to Nicole Srutowski at two meters, who score on a backhand to increase the lead to 5-1. Oak Park's Lauren Gumbel scored on a drive off a pass from Poulos to cut the lead to 5-2, but it was as close as the Huskies could get. Sam Cody made a steal on the Huskies next possession, drove the length of the pool, made a pass to the middle to Mulhull, who assisted Amanda Cody on her first goal from the right wing. Ali Schilling added a goal before the half ended with a lob shot to put Sandburg comfortably ahead by a score of 7-2.

Mulhull and Sam Cody scored early in the third period for the Eagles, and Sandburg went ahead 10-2 on Cody's third goal of the game near the end of the quarter. Lisa Muhs and Ciurej added tallies in the final period before Gumbel scored her second goal to make the score 12-3 at the end of the game.
