Sandburg 14 St Ignatius 4 (Girls)

Fenwick Tournament

April 2, 2005

-
Sandburg was flat-out dominant in their first place division contest against St Ignatius on Saturday night, as they used a 6-0 run between the first and second quarters en route to a 14-4 victory.

Sandburg's Hannah Ciurej scored on a shot from the point on Sandburg's first possession of the game, but St Ignatius responded with a goal by Nora Kennelly at two meters. Amanda Cody made a steal, drew an ejection, and assisted Ami Czerwinski on a powerplay goal to put the Eagles ahead 2-1 with 4:10 remaining in the opening period, and Sandburg would never relinquich the lead from that point on. After goalie Mary Cusack made a save on a shot by the Wolfpack's Kristen Kaulus, Ciurej found Cody open for a skip shot to give the Eagles a 3-1 lead. Cusack denied another tough shot from Maisie O'Malley to keep Sandburg ahead by two and the end of the first quarter.

The Eagles were clicking on all cylinders in the second quarter, as Cody scored her second goal on a drive (assisted by Nicole Srutowski) in the first minute to increase the advantage to 4-1. The two repeated the process one minute later, as Cody recorded a hat trick with a driving goal with 5:47 still remaining on the clock in thh first half. Srutowski made a steal and assisted Sam Cody on a breakaway goal, and Cody made it 7-1 with her second goal on Srutowski's fourth consecutive assist. Meredith Messerle ended the Eagles' run with a quick shot from the left wing after a pass by Yadi Leon, but Allison Schilling delivered on two straight lob shots (assists from Lisa Muhs and Amanda Cody) to give Sandburg a 9-2 lead at halftime.

Michelle Mulhull (assisted by Czerwinski) and Ciurej (assisted by Sam Cody) added goals in a quick third period to make the score 11-2. Messerle scored two straight goals to open the fourth quarter to get St Ignatius to within 11-4, but Christina Ladas, Amanda Cody, and Srutowski added late goals to give Sandburg the 14-4 win.
