Homewood-Flossmoor 9 Naperville Central 8 (2 OT)

April 27, 2005

Aaron Morrison scored a powerplay goal from the point with 0:44 seconds left and Sean Dunagan made a key save in the final minute as Homewood-Flossmoor emerged with a major upset win over Naperville Central 9-8 on Wednesday night. The Vikings overcame a 7-4 halftime deficit, as Darren Nelson scored twice in the fourth quarter to send the game to overtime.

Lavon Robinson scored with two seconds left in the first overtime period, hitting the opposite side of the cage from the left wing to put Flossmoor ahead 8-7. The Redhawks responded with 1:13 left in the second overtime session, as Dan Li scored from the right side to tie the game. But Morrison's shot made the difference, as he nailed the left corner of the cage from seven meters out on a powerplay. Naperville Central had one last chance to tie the game, but Dunagan came up big with a save on Brian Luth's outside shot, and the Vikings successfully ran out the clock to clinch the victory.

Robinson and Ari Watman got the Vikings off to an early lead in the opening period, as they scored consecutive goals in a two-minute span. The Redhawks' Scott Fleming scored a powerplay goal from the wing to cut the lead in half, then Fleming and Ryan Alberts both scored in the last minute to give Central a 3-2 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Don Lambka put the Redhawks ahead 4-2 early in the second with a goal from two meters, and Pat Leclair made it 5-2 moments later with an outside shot that found the back of the net. Nelson scored his first goal of the game for the Vikings to cut the lead to 5-3, but Leclair made it 6-3 for Central and Ryan Alberts scored his second goal of the half to increase the advantage to 7-3. Russ Injerd added a powerplay goal before the half ended to make the score 7-4 at halftime.

Watman scored the lone goal of the third quarter, as he put home a powerplay shot with just four seconds remaining in the period. Nelson then cut the lead to 7-6 with a goal midway through the final period, and he scored on a four-meter penalty shot with just 0:31 left to play in the game to tie the score. Dunagan made a save on Central's last chance to win the game in regulation and held onto the ball to send the game to overtime.

Nelson scored three to lead the Vikings, while Robinson and Watman each added two goals. Leclair, Fleming and Alberts all totaled two goals in the loss for the Redhawks.

Naperville Central, who played without star player Kevin Bell, will finish their regular season schedule with a home game against #11 Evanston tomorrow night. Meanwhile, Homewood-Flossmoor will travel to the Stevenson Tournament on the final weekend of the season before Sectionals begin.
