Stevenson Tournament (Boys) - Results

April 22 & 23 @ Stevenson

 

Friday, April 22

Stevenson 6 St Patrick 2

Stevenson led 3-1 at halftime, and Kevin Alland added two goals from two-meters out to give the Patriots a 5-1 cushion as they cruised to a 6-2 win in the tournament opener. Alan Lagunov started the scoring with a powerplay goal, while Mike Hall and Brian Mitchell each scored in the first period to make the score 3-0. After Alland's third quarter goals, Lagunov put the Patriots up 6-1 in the fourth quarter, while James Ridgeway (#7) made the final score 6-2 with a late goal for the Shamrocks.

Brother Rice 12 Oak Park 3

Mark DiCola scored twice in the first quarter and finished with six total goals as Brother Rice knocked off Oak Park 12-3 in the second game of the tournament. Nick Velasquez and Sean Coghlan each scored twice, while Terry Moran and Fernando Chavez-Cedeno both added one goal apiece. Kevin Williams scored all three goals for the Huskies, who trailed only 2-1 after the first period but could not hang with the Crusaders.

Fenwick 10 Mundelein 5

Fenwick jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the first quarter and never looked back in a 10-5 win over Mundelein. Mark Melnyk and Tom Parolin each had three goals for the Friars, while Oscar Calderon and Jack Ryden both scored twice in the win. Greg Peck had four goals and Brandon Schawel chipped in one in the loss for the Mustangs.

Naperville Central 8 Stevenson 6

Brother Rice 15 Palatine 7

Brother Rice advanced to the first place bracket with a 15-7 win over Palatine in their second game of the evening. Mark DiCola scored five goals to help the Crusaders jump out to an 8-1 halftime lead. Omar Vasquez scored four, Sean Coghlan added three, and three other players scored once for Brother Rice in the win. Mitchell Tucker led Palatine with two goals, while five other players scored once for the Pirates in the loss.

Fenwick 17 Lake Forest 3

Fenwick dominated Lake Forest in the nightcap with a 17-3 win to advance to the championship round of the tournament. Jack Ryden led the Friars with four goals, while Bob Lopez added three and Mark Melnyk and Luke Baldwin both scored twice in the victory. Six other players scored once in the win for Fenwick.

 

Saturday, April 23

Naperville Central 10 St Patrick 3

Palatine 6 Oak Park 6

Kevin Williams turned his defender to score with 1:41 left to cut the Palatine lead to 6-5, and his two-meter goal with 0:42 left tied the game at 6-6. Scott Dunlavey made a powerplay save in the final minute, but Kyle Sorenson prevented Williams from getting a chance to give Oak Park the victory in the closing seconds. Oak Park won the tiebreaker and would advance to the second place bracket. Williams scored three for OPRF, while Patrick Burton, Joe Anderson and Scott Dunlavey each scored once. Skylar Davis led the Pirates with four goals and Rob Malenchik added two scores.

Mundelein 12 Lake Forest 2

Mundelein built a 9-0 lead before allowing a Lake Forest goal en route to a 12-2 win over the Scouts. Sean Larsen and Brandon Schawel both scored three times for the Mustangs, as Andrew Peterson and Mark Selle added two goals and Geoff Schott and Ricky Lukacs scored once.

 

Championship bracket

Palatine 5 St Patrick 4

Palatine came from behind to stun St Patrick 5-4 in the third place bracket's opening game. Neil Travers scored twice in the first period and Mike Poelsteri added one score for the Shamrocks, who led 3-1 after Skylar Davis added a goal for Palatine near the end of the period. Travers scored his third goal of the first half to put the Shamrocks ahead 4-1 at the break, but Palatine got to within one goal as Louis Margano and Kyle Sorenson scored in the third period. In the last quarter, Rob Malenchik scored twice, with the game-winner coming with 2:59 remaining for Palatine.

Stevenson 6 Oak Park 3

Stevenson led from the first quarter on in a 6-3 win over Oak Park in the second place bracket. Mike Hall and Brian Mitchell scored two goals apiece to led the Patriots, while Kevin Williams scored two of the three Oak Park goals.

Brother Rice 13 Naperville Central 5

Naperville Central led 2-1 late in the first quarter on goals by Don Lambka and Kevin Bell, but Mark DiCola and Nick Velasquez scored the next two goals to put Brother Rice ahead 3-2 as they went on to beat the Redhawks 13-5 in the first round bracket. Velasquez scored two straight goals in the second, followed by DiCola and Kevin McShane's goals to give the Crusaders a 7-2 advantage. Bell scored from two meters to cut into the lead, but Velasquez put Rice ahead 8-3 with a breakaway goal in the third period. Bell struck again with a backhand goal to make it 8-4, and Chavez-Cedeno and Lambka traded goals to make the score 9-5 early in the fourth period. In the final three minutes, Coghlan scored twice and McShane and Velasquez added goals for Brother Rice in the 13-5 win.
