FENWICK TOURNAMENT

Fenwick Remains On Top Against The State's Best At Own Tourney

Top-ranked Fenwick proved they are the team to beat in 2012 by emerging from their own tourney unscathed after several challenges between Thursday and Saturday. The Friars' strong performance in the title game allowed them to beat #2 Lyons 16-8 at the end of the night on Saturday. The defending champions also beat Curie, H-F, and St Patrick during their title run. See below for the game recaps:

 

Day 1 - Game Recaps

Fenwick 15 St Patrick 6

The Friars utilized a balanced offensive attack and a 7-0 run in the second quarter to pull away from the Shamrocks to earn a tournament-opening 15-6 win. Justin White, Matt Bresnahan, Matt Farmer, and Mike Mahoney each tallied 2 scores to lead Fenwick. Jon Gutierrez and Luis Plascencia both recorded 2 goals in the loss for Pats.

 

Oak Park 9 Brother Rice 8

Nate Johnson recorded 4 goals and Mark Hallman added 2 scores as the Huskies used a 3-0 fourth period run to grab a surprise 9-8 win over Brother Rice on Thursday afternoon. The Crusaders, who trailed 3-0 after the opening quarter, outscored the Huskies 4-1 in the third period to take an 8-6 lead, but they could not hang on to their slim lead in the closing minutes. Mike Mulcrone registered 4 goals and Kevin Mayer tallied 2 scores in the loss for Rice.

 

Curie 14 Homewood-Flossmoor 9

Eduardo Chavez scored 4 goals to lead the Condors past H-F 14-9 on Thursday. Nick Thiros and Zach Peterson both scored 3 times in the loss for the Vikings.

 

Lyons 12 Stevenson 6

Kovas Zygas and Sean McMahon each scored 3 goals and Joe Shannon added 2 scores to help lift Lyons past Stevenson 12-6 on Thursday. Mitchell Sokolsky scored 3 times in the loss for the Patriots.

 

Lincoln-Way East 13 St Ignatius 11

The Griffins put together a strong second half performance to earn a 13-11 victory over St Ignatius in the tournament opener for both squads. Billy Barth scored 7 goals and Jesus Juarez added 2 scores in the loss for the Wolfpack.

 

Homewood-Flossmoor 12 St Patrick 10

Kevin Kuchta recorded 5 goals and Henry Weeks, Nick Thiros, and Zach Peterson all totaled 2 scores in H-F's 12-10 victory over St Patrick. Luke O'Callaghan notched 6 scores in the loss for the Shamrocks.

 

Day 2 - Game Recaps

Fenwick 13 Curie 8

Matt Farmer totaled 4 goals, Viken Huening scored 3 times, and Matt Bresnahan notched 2 scores as the hosts earned a 13-8 victory over Curie in Friday's first game. Tommy McGuire also stopped 8 shots in the Friars' win. Marcos Hernandez and Ramiro Almarez both scored 3 goals in the loss for the Condors.

 

Lyons 17 Naperville Central 4

Joe Shannon and Kovas Zygas each scored 5 goals and Peter Dore chipped in with 4 scores as LT broke the game open with a 6-0 run in the opening quarter and cruised to a 17-4 win over Naperville Central. TJ Johnson led the Redhawks with 2 scores in the losing effort.

 

Oak Park 6 Neuqua Valley 6

Troy Williams scored 3 goals and helped OPRF build a 4-2 halftime lead, but Will Russell (3 goals) led a second-half comeback that saw Neuqua outscore the Huskies by the same margin to end the game tied at 6-6.

 

Naperville North 19 St Ignatius 3

Eric Curia scored 5 times and Adam Nyland added 4 scores as the Huskies downed the Wolfpack 19-3. Nolan Roberts also scored 3 times in the North victory. Billy Barth scored all 3 goals in the loss for St Ignatius.

 

Naperville Central 7 Stevenson 5

Matt Reasons scored 3 goals and Neal Hosper added 2 tallies to lead Naperville Central to a 7-5 win over Stevenson on Friday. Alex Shkiler scored 3 times and Kyle Plotsky scored 2 goals in the loss for the Patriots.

 

Neuqua Valley 13 Brother Rice 12

Kevin Patterson scored 5 goals, Robert Vechiola recorded 4 scores, and Will Russell scored 3 times as NV held off Brother Rice 13-12 on Friday night. Mike Mulcrone scored 4 goals and Dave Jackson recorded 3 goals in the loss for the Crusaders.

 

Naperville North 10 Lincoln-Way East 5

Eric Curia led all scorers with 5 goals as Naperville North knocked off LWE 10-5 in the final game of the second day of the Fenwick Tournament.

 

Day 3 - Game Recaps

Fenwick 13 Homewood-Flossmoor 8

Viken Huening recorded 4 goals and both Dan Kelly and Matt Farmer scored 2 times as Fenwick moved on to the title game of their own tournament with a 13-8 win over H-F. Tommy McGuire also made 12 saves in the Friars' victory. Henry Weeks, Kevin Kuchta, and Nick Thiros each tallied 2 scores in the loss for the Vikings.

 

Curie 13 St Patrick 3

Ramiro Almarez recorded 6 goals and Eduardo Chavez added 4 scores to lead the Condors to a 13-3 win over St Patrick. Jon Gutierrez led the Shamrocks with 2 goals in the loss.

 

Stevenson 13 Brother Rice 8

Kyle Plotsky and Mitchell Sokolsky both scored 4 goals to help lift Stevenson past Brother Rice 13-8 in the first game of the championship round on Saturday morning. Alex Shkiler and Hasad Khan combined to score 5 goals for the Patriots, who raced out to a 6-0 lead and never looked back to earn the win. Kevin Mayer, Mike Mulcrone, and Mitch Strahlman each scored 2 times in the loss for the Crusaders.

 

St Patrick 10 St Ignatius 7

Jon Gutierrez converted 4 goals and Greg Johnson and Luke O'Callaghan both added 2 scores as St Pats downed St Ignatius 10-7. Angus Tan, John Reyes, and Billy Barth each scored 2 in the Wolfpack's loss.

 

Neuqua Valley 9 Lincoln-Way East 6

Kevin Patterson totaled 4 goals and Will Russell added 2 scores at the Wildcats held off the Griffins 9-6 on Saturday. David Drewes scored 3 times and Tom Vander Velde added 2 goals in the Griffins' losing effort.

 

Naperville Central 15 Oak Park 10

The Redhawks outscored the Huskies 6-2 in the second to pull away and earn a 15-10 decision. Dennis Herron scored 6 goals and Matt Reasons added 5 scores in the NC win. Troy Williams scored 5 goals in the loss for OPRF.

 

Lyons 15 Naperville North 5

Chris Withington, Sean McMahon, and Joe Shannon each tallied 3 goals to help the Lions handle North 15-5 on Saturday. Eric Curia scored 3 times in the loss for the Huskies.

 

Stevenson 9 St Ignatius 4

Alex Shkiler recorded 4 goals and Kyle Plotsky added 2 scores as Stevenson defeated Ignatius 9-4. Billy Barth registered 3 scores in the losing effort for the Wolfpack.

 

Brother Rice 15 Homewood-Flossmoor 9

Mike Mulcrone scored 6 times, Kevin Mayer notched 4 scores, and Dave Jackson put in 3 scores as Rice defeated H-F 15-9. Kevin Kuchta led the Vikings with 4 goals in the losing cause.

 

Curie 17 Neuqua Valley 6

Ramiro Almarez scored 6 goals and Eduardo Chavez added 3 in the Condors' 17-6 win over Neuqua.

 

Oak Park 11 Lincoln-Way East 7

Troy Williams scored 6 goals and both Mark Hallman and Nate Johnson added 2 scores apiece in OPRF's 11-7 triumph over LWE. Tom Vander Velde recorded 5 goals in the loss for the Griffins.

 

Fenwick 16 Lyons 8 (1st place)

Matt Farmer totaled 6 goals and Viken Huening added 4 scores as Fenwick beat Lyons 16-8 to win their own tournament on Saturday night. Dan Kelly and Rich Mueller each added 2 scores in the Friars' win. Joe Shannon and Josh Hirt each tallied 2 scores in the losing effort for the Lions.

 

Naperville North 10 Naperville Central 7

Aaron Katz and Eric Curia each scored 3 goals to help Naperville North wrap-up the Fenwick Tournament with a 10-7 victory over rivals Naperville Central. Dennis Herron and Matt Reasons both tallied 3 scores in the loss for the Redhawks.
