Weekend Update (4.21.07)

BROTHER RICE TOURNAMENT (BOYS)

St Patrick, Fenwick, Brother Rice, and Loyola all won their opening round games on Friday night at the Brother Rice Tournament. On Saturday morning, Fenwick defeated St Rita 12-3, Sandburg held off Libertyville, and Brother Rice will face Loyola at 10:30am as the Ramblers look to earn their third straight win against the Crusaders. Upcoming games include St Patrick-Waubonsie (11:30am) and Brother Rice-Libertyville (12:30pm). #1 St Patrick takes on #2 Fenwick at 3:30pm in a game that could determine who advances to the championship game of the tournament. UPDATE #2 - Fenwick defeated St Patrick 10-1 and finished the first round of games with a 3-0 record, as they move on to face Brother Rice in the title game of the tournament. Rice earned wins over Libertyville (13-7) and Loyola (14-5) to advance. St Patrick will take on Loyola for third place, Sandburg plays Waubonsie in the fifth place game, and St Rita takes on Libertyville for seventh place. UPDATE #3 - Loyola staged a furious comeback after falling behind 7-3 after three quarters, but St Patrick emerged with a 9-7 win and a third place finish at the Brother Rice Tournament. Sandburg took fifth after beating Waubonsie 8-6, while St Rita finished in seventh place after earning a 13-8 win over Libertyville. The final game between Fenwick and Brother Rice is currently underway...UPDATE #4 - Brother Rice and Fenwick have reached halftime tied at 4-4...UPDATE #5 - Fenwick wins 12-10 over Brother Rice.

 

ST IGNATIUS TOURNAMENT (GIRLS)

St Ignatius, Loyola, New Trier, Naperville North, and Marian all notched first round victories at the Maroon & Gold Tournament at UIC on Friday night. The Wolfpack beat both Lyons and Waubonsie, so they will need just one win over New Trier on Saturday morning (9:40am) to advance to the title game of the tournament. Lyons and New Trier played earlier this morning with a chance to play in the third place game on the line, while Loyola will look for wins against H-F and Naperville North in hopes of a championship game rematch with St Ignatius. UPDATE #2 - Lyons beat New Trier 9-1, H-F defeated Marian 8-2, and St Ignatius earned a 14-4 victory over Waubonsie Valley on Saturday morning...St Ignatius advanced to the championship game, while Lyons needs to beat Waubonsie to advance to the third place game. UPDATE #3 - Loyola won two straight games on Saturday, a narrow 5-4 win over H-F and a 9-6 victory over Naperville North and will face Ignatius in the championship game; with a three-way tie for second place in the bracket, H-F qualifies for the third place game and a matchup with Lyons after recording the lowest goals against margin. New Trier and Naperville North play for fifth place; the seventh place game pits Marian against Waubonsie. UPDATE #4 - Nora Kennelly scored with 0:45 seconds left to give St Ignatius a 9-8 win over Loyola in the championship game of the Maroon & Gold Tournament. Homewood-Flossmoor beat Lyons 6-5 in the third place game, New Trier beat Naperville North 9-3 to claim fifth place, and Waubonsie defeated Marian 11-7 in the seventh place game.

 

LINCOLN-WAY EAST 13 STAGG 7 (BOYS)

Zack VanSwol tallied 7 goals to lead the Griffins to a 13-7 win over Stagg in the SouthWest Suburban Conference matchup. John Brozovic added 3 goals, Kevin Kubik scored 2 times, and Trevor Acklin added a goal in the win. Griffins' goalie Ryan Golden stopped 9 shots in the victory.

 

MCHENRY 11 HOFFMAN ESTATES 8 (BOYS)

Bill Dabrowski scored 6 goals to lead McHenry to an 11-8 nonconference win on Friday over Hoffman Estates. Jon Lesniak and Graham Olson each scored twice in the win, while Ryan Forner added a goal for McHenry.

 

OAK PARK 10 LATIN 2 (GIRLS)

Goalies Melissa and Vicki Maslowski teamed up to make 9 saves and allow only 2 goals as Oak Park defeated Latin 10-2 on Friday night. Audrey Reardon recorded 4 goals for the Huskies in the win, while Val Poulos and Megan Rigali added 2 scores and Caitlin Garvey scored once.

OAK PARK 14 NAPERVILLE NORTH 13 (BOYS)

Mike Nickels scored 5 goals to lead Oak Park to a 14-13 overtime victory over Naperville North on Thursday night. Tommy Poulos added 3 goals for OPRF, while Doug Fischer and Dylan O'Connell each added 2 scores in the win. OPRF goalie Isaac Rothenbaum stopped 13 shots in the win, while Naperville North's Alex Buck tallied 7 goals in the loss.

 

LINCOLN-WAY EAST 10 HOMEWOOD-FLOSSMOOR 4 (BOYS)

Zack VanSwol scored 4 goals and Kevin Kubik added 3 scores to lead the Griffins to a 10-4 victory over H-F. LWE goalie Ryan Golden saved 9 shots in the win.

 

HOMEWOOD-FLOSSMOOR 5 LINCOLN-WAY EAST 2 (GIRLS)

Andrea Peterson scored 2 goals to lead H-F to a 5-2 win over Lincoln-Way East in the SWSC matchup on Thursday evening. Julie Carlisle, Story Pumphrey, and Kiley Maanum each scored once in the win for the Vikings, while Erin Reilly and Rachel Japp scored one goal apiece for the Griffins in the loss.

 

MUNDELEIN 10 LAKE FOREST 3 (GIRLS)

Mundelein jumped out to a 6-1 halftime lead en route to a 10-3 victory over Lake Forest on Thursday in the North Suburban Conference contest. Siobhan Larsen led the way for the Mustangs in the win with 4 goals, while Maura Coughlin added 2 goals in the victory.

 

NEUQUA VALLEY 6 LYONS 4 (GIRLS)

Kathleen Patterson and Chelsea Reczek each scored 3 goals to lead the Wildcats to a 6-4 win over Lyons on Thursday. Kayley Provow also recorded 14 saves in the victory.

Naper Central 12 Naper North 10 - Central goes to North and wins for the first time in three tries this season.

Loyola 14 New Trier 10 - The Ramblers hand New Trier their first loss of the season.

St Ignatius 10 Oak Park 2  - Brian Jucas scored 6 goals to lead the Wolfpack to the nonconference win over OPRF. Mike Nickels scored both goals for the Huskies in the loss.

St Patrick 6 Stevenson 5 - The Shamrocks remain undefeated with a narrow victory over Stevenson 6-5 in Lincolnshire. James Ridgeway scored 5 goals for St Patrick in the win.

 

ST IGNATIUS 13 SANDBURG 8 (GIRLS)

Nora Kennelly scored 5 goals to lead St Ignatius to a 13-8 victory over Sandburg on Wednesday night. Hannah Ciurej led the Eagles with 5 goals in the loss.

 

NAPERVILLE CENTRAL 15 NAPERVILLE NORTH 6 (GIRLS)

Nikki Nelson scored 5 goals and Kara Wilson added 4 scores to help lift the Redhawks over Naperville North 15-6 on Wednesday. Amanda Kerth also scored 2 goals in the win for Central, while North's Erin Gibson recorded 4 goals in the loss for the Huskies.

Matt Shirer scored the game-winner at the buzzer of the second period of overtime to give Homewood-Flossmoor a 12-11 victory over Lockport on Tuesday in the SouthWest Suburban Conference matchup. Dave Kuchta and Greg Nelson each scored 4 goals in the win for the Vikings, while Mark Leluga stopped 9 shots in goal. Paul Ivnik tallied 5 goals in the loss for the Porters.

 

PALATINE 13 SCHAUMBURG 11 (BOYS)

Mitch Tucker scored 3 goals in overtime to lead Palatine to a 13-11 victory over Schaumburg in the Mid-Suburban League contest on Tuesday night. Tucker totaled 7 goals and goalie Spencer Blackham made 12 saves in the win for the Pirates.

 

HERSEY 12 PROSPECT 11 (BOYS)

Chad Mikesell scored the game-winner with 0:16 seconds remaining in overtime and totaled 6 goals to lead Hersey to a 12-11 win over Prospect in the MSL. Joe Armour added 4 goals for the Huskies in the win, while Joe Stelnick tallied 4 goals for Prospect in the losing effort.

 

NAPERVILLE CENTRAL 5 LYONS 4 (GIRLS)

Heather Gardner and Elisa Menis both scored 2 goals to lead the Redhawks to a 5-4 victory over Lyons on Tuesday night. Sam Virella also stopped 10 shots for Central in the win, while Sam Shamurek added a goal for the Redhawks. Megan Kono scored 3 of the 4 goals for Lyons, while goalie Emily Bornhoff saved 13 shots for the Lions in the loss.

 

OAK PARK 13 NORTHSIDE 3 (GIRLS)

Val Poulos scored 6 goals to lead the Huskies to a 13-3 victory over Northside on Tuesday night. Audrey Reardon and Lauren Gumbel each scored 3 goals and Kati Pedersen scored once for OPRF in the win.

OAK PARK 11 WAUBONSIE VALLEY 10 (BOYS)

Mike Nickels scored the game-winning goal in sudden death overtime and totaled 6 goals to lead Oak Park to an 11-10 win over Waubonsie Valley on Monday night. Doug Fischer added 4 goals and Huskies' goalie Isaac Rothenbaum made 7 saves in the win.

 

LOYOLA 16 GLENBROOK SOUTH 9 (BOYS)

Evan Rourke led the Ramblers with 8 goals while Nate LeRoy and Matt Stonequist each scored 3 goals to lead Loyola to a 16-9 victory over Glenbrook South. Conor Dwyer also scored 2 goals in the win, while Loyola goalie Adam Weissert stopped 12 shots for the Ramblers.

 

MCHENRY 5 ST VIATOR 3 (BOYS)

Bill Dabrowski scored 3 goals and Dusty Lang stopped 23 shots to help lead McHenry to a 5-3 victory over St Viator. Mike Barry scored 2 goals and Robby Vavrik made 15 saves in the loss for the Lions.

 

LOCKPORT 10 CONANT 7 (BOYS)

Paul Ivnik scored 8 of Lockport's 10 goals as the Porters beat Conant in the nonconference matchup 10-7 on Monday.

 

ST IGNATIUS 11 LATIN 2 (GIRLS)

Nora Kennelly recorded 4 goals and four other players got on the scoreboard as St Ignatius defeated Latin 11-2 on Monday night.

 

OAK PARK 9 WAUBONSIE VALLEY 4 (GIRLS)

Audrey Reardon scored 4 goals and Val Poulos added 3 scores to lead Oak Park to a 9-4 win over Waubonsie Valley in a nonconference game. Megan Rigali also scored 2 times and Lauren Gumbel tallied a goal for the Huskies, and goalie Melissa Maslowski recorded 6 saves in the win.

 

NAPERVILLE CENTRAL 9 NEUQUA VALLEY 7 (GIRLS)

Heather Gardner (3 goals) scored the go-ahead goal in the fourth quarter and Kara Wilson recorded 4 goals to lead the Redhawks to a 9-7 win over Neuqua Valley.

 

MUNDELEIN 8 FREMD 4 (GIRLS)

Siobhan Larsen scored 6 goals to lead the Mustangs to an 8-4 win over Fremd on Monday night. Mundelein jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first period, as Larson recorded the first three goals of the game. Maura Coughlin and Claire Bilski also tallied goals for Mundelein, while Carolyn Wright scored 2 goals for the Vikings in the losing effort.

 

YORK 13 HINSDALE SOUTH 9 (GIRLS)

Karen Achtien scored 7 goals to lead York to a 13-9 victory over Hinsdale South in the West Suburban Conference matchup.

 

WHEELING 8 ROLLING MEADOWS 7 (GIRLS)

Britten Wilson tallied 4 goals to help Wheeling hold off Rolling Meadows 8-7 in the Mid-Suburban League contest on Monday evening. Amy Wilson added 2 scores for the Wildcats in the win.

 

PROSPECT 7 HERSEY 2 (GIRLS)

Prospect clinched the MSL East with a 7-2 win over Hersey to advance to the Mid-Suburban League title game on Monday night. Lauren Fairburn led the way with 6 goals for the Knights.

Erin Gibson scored 3 goals to lead the Huskies to a 6-3 nonconference win over Palatine on Monday.
