ENTRY #4 - "The Poolside Blog: Part I"

by Chris Fetterman

3.11.09

Ok, so, with one game down and, for some, 36 more to go, what have I noticed so far?  I’ve come up with a top ten list (boys side only...I'll have a girls' Top 10 next week):

  • Fenwick looks like “Clubber” Lang in Rocky III. At the beginning, he is unbeatable.  It could play out where an underdog team gets whooped by them during the regular season…but sneaks in at the end and knocks them out cold.  Makes me wonder who would be playing the Hulk Hogan/Thunderlips part though. Good luck with all of that.

  • Schaumburg is like your son or daughter that can now beat you at anything.  You hate to admit it because you’ve spent years trying not to let it happen.  But it’s too late; they’re bigger, and stronger… it had to happen eventually.

  • Hinsdale South? Interesting win over H-F.

  • There are a lot of new refs; the old refs are trying to catch them up quick, keep up the good work! I am a head coach, so naturally I have some resentment toward refs... so, let’s just say I’m clearing some space on my office wall so I can frame the multiple red cards I get this year.  It's ok newbies, you’ll get it eventually. (I am inserting a virtual pat on the back here)

  • It looks like the tournaments this weekend are so packed with talent. It’s kind of like watching the movie Tropic Thunder…only you hope it's not as much of a letdown.

  • A lot of teams this season so far as I can tell, are like when you get a new hair cut, and it’s a really good one. But, all you really care about is if anyone notices (not that I would know; but I’ve noticed)

  • My migraines have started a week earlier than usual.  It’s more annoying than White Sox broadcaster Hawk Harrelson’s catch phrase, “He Gone!” which gives me the shakes.

  • The Naperville area teams look pretty good so far.  They remind me of the Cobra Kai dojo- they’re all pretty good, and you don’t really know which one is the best, but you’re kind of afraid of them all.

  • There are a lot of high scores this week.  I am not judging or assuming anything, but I do know that in Major League… everyone beat up on the lowly Indians… Until they got some motivation and all they did in the end was win the Division Championship. If you hear the beginning of “Wild Thing” at any point during your games, I would be worried if I were you.

  • The anticipation for the first week of games was kind of like waiting for Watchmen to come out.  You hear so many good things that you’ve built this idea in your head and you come out of it thinking… “You know… that was a pretty darn good movie. It didn’t blow me away. But it was just really, really good.”

Ok, so the first week has been pretty great so far. That is all for now… stay tuned at the end of the week for an article featuring ex-Brother Rice All-American Mike Grund.

And ladies, don’t panic.  I'll have your top ten next week. In the meantime...see you 'Poolside' this week!
