TOURNAMENT RECAP

 

Preview
The Catholic League Tournament gets underway on Thursday with a play-in game sandwiched in between four quarterfinals. The winners advance to Saturday's semifinal round before the event culminates with consolation and championship games. The Friars earned the top-seed after an undefeated conference season, but expect some epic battles between several of the top teams in the state. Loyola stunned the hosts in the title game last season, but any number of teams enter the event with a chance to claim the coveted title.

Thursday's Game Recaps

DLS 12 St Patrick 11 (OT)

Robert Rodriguez registered 6 goals and Angelo Espinoza netted 2 scores as the Meteors stunned St Pats in overtime 12-11 in the MCAC quarterfinals. Connor O'Rourke and Joseph Gibson each recorded 4 goals in the narrow loss for the Shamrocks.

 

St Viator 22 Mt Carmel 7

Eric Sutton recorded 9 goals and Keegan Finn slammed home 7 shots as the Lions beat Mt Carmel 22-7 in the MCAC's play-in game on Thursday. Shea Boyer also notched 2 scores in the win for St Viator.

 

St Ignatius 20 Brother Rice 6

John Reyes and Tom Dowling both totaled 7 goals and Shane Hughes scored 5 times as the Wolfpack beat Brother Rice 20-6. Tym Zymon stopped 10 shots and Billy Barth also added one score for Ignatius. Dan Birmingham and Dan Whalen both scored 2 goals in the loss for the Crusaders.

 

Loyola 17 St Rita 6

Cameron Shewchuck scored 6 goals and Trevor Prince made 12 saves to help the Ramblers get past St Rita 17-6 on Thursday night. Matt Kearney and Ragen Murphy both tallied 3 scores and Mike Zahorik put in 2 goals in the winning effort. Chuck Henrichs and Eric Johnson both netted 2 goals in the loss for the Mustangs.

 

Fenwick 16 St Viator 6

Danny Farmer recorded 4 goals, Will Skowron put in 3 scores, and Mike Hill denied 13 shots to help lead Fenwick past St Viator 16-6 in the late game in Oak Park on Thursday night. Keegan Finn scored 3 times and Eric Sutton added 2 goals in the loss for the Lions.

 

Saturday's Game Recaps

Fenwick 12 DLS 8

Andrew Bertschy and Danny Farmer both scored 3 goals and Ryan Masi notched 2 scores as Fenwick beat DLS 12-8 to advance to the MCAC title game. David Durkin, DJ Perez, and Omar Calderon all scored once in the win for the Friars.

 

Loyola 12 St Ignatius 7

Cameron Shewchuck and George Finn both scored 3 goals and Trevor Prince made 12 saves as Loyola topped St Ignatius 12-7 in the semifinals of the MCAC Tournament. Matt Kearney and Tom Baker both scored 2 goals while Jack Nickele and Ragen Murphy each scored once in the victory. Shane Hughes put in 4 goals, John Reyes notched 2 scores, and Billy Barth recorded one goal for SICP.

 

St Ignatius 12 DLS 10

The Wolfpack outscored DLS 3-0 down the stretch to walk away with a 12-10 victory over the Meteors in the third-place game of the Catholic League tournament. Billy Barth totaled 3 goals and both John Reyes and Shane Hughes scored 2 goals in the winning effort. Andreas Christy, Brenden Stelmach, and Tom Dowling each added one score for the Wolfpack. Robert Rodriguez netted 5 goals in the loss for DLS.

 

Loyola 9 Fenwick 8

Tom Baker scored the game-winning goal after an ejection and the Loyola defense did not allow a shot on Fenwick's final possession as the Ramblers defeated Fenwick 9-8 to claim their second straight Catholic League title. Cameron Shewchuck scored 3 goals, Ragen Murphy scored 2 times (including a critical game tying goal), while Andrew Hodur, George Finn, and Matt Kearney each scored once in the victory. Trevor Prince also stopped 9 shots in the win for Loyola. Omar Calderon led Fenwick with 3 goals, Danny Farmer notched 2 scores, and David Durkin, DJ Perez, and Ryan Masi all scored once in the loss. Mike Hill also recorded 17 saves for the Friars.
