The Catholic League season gets underway with a matchup between last year's second-ranked team and last year's second-place state finisher. The Friars are looking to set the tone early as they look to return to championship form with a win, while the Ramblers are starting out fresh with a revamped starting lineup.

6:00pm - #19 Maine South at STC East

The Hawks look to continue their ascension up the water polo ranks as they kick off their season with a tricky away fixture at St Charles East in nonconference play on Monday night.

A big clash between top ten teams officially gets the season underway as Danijela Jackovich and the sixth-ranked Knights head to Chicago to battle the second-ranked Mighty Macs. Both teams are hoping a win can get their respective seasons off on the right foot as both teams also have an eye on a return to the state tournament in 2013.

Water polo newcomers DeLaSalle begin their first-ever season with a conference game against a Marian Catholic squad on the rise on opening night.

MATCH OF THE DAY

Fenwick 10 Loyola 7

Matt Farmer scored 7 times to lift Fenwick past Loyola 10-7 in the Catholic League opener for both teams. Justin White added 2 scores and Matt Bresnahan scored once for the Friars, who built a 5-2 lead at halftime en route to the victory. Ben Pasquesi notched 4 scores in the loss for the Ramblers.

 

Bremen 13 Lincoln-Way Central 12

Zach Zdanavicius scored the game-winning goal with four seconds remaining to lift Bremen to a come-from-behind victory over Lincoln-Way Central. The Red Jaguars trailed by three scores entering the last quarter, but the Quinn Johnson-led squad (10 goals, 11 steals) came storming back to earn the narrow victory. Tristan Funk scored 5 times in the losing effort for the Knights.

 

Hinsdale Central 17 Morton 6

George Koulouris recorded 7 goals and both Brogan O'Doherty and Wade Kinney tacked on 3 scores each in the Red Devils' 17-6 victory over Morton in West Suburban Conference play.

 

Maine South 16 STC East 6

Makai DeNeve-Arnam scored 5 times, Ryan Pattullo tacked on 3 scores, and John Moran, Kyle Christie and Matt Kramer each added 2 goals in the Hawks' 16-6 win over the Saints.

 

Northside 16 Whitney Young 11

The latest CPS battle between Northside and Whitney Young went the way of the Mustangs, who started the season off with a 16-11 victory over the Dolphins. The roles were reversed in the last meeting, as Young beat Northside in the CPS Tournament semifinals last May. Seth Hughes totaled 6 goals, Benjamin Liu added 2 scores, and goalie Matt Gonzalez made 17 saves in the loss for the Dolphins.

 

St Ignatius 11 St Viator 7

Billy Barth recorded 4 goals, Tom Dowling notched 2 scores, and Tym Zymon saved 8 shots to help lift the Wolfpack past St Viator 11-7 on Monday in Catholic League action. Rob Battin led the Lions with 4 goals, Frank Sikorski stopped 9 shots, and Eric Sutton, Keegan Finn, and Zachary Benson each notched one score in the loss for Viator.

 

St Patrick 12 St Rita 6

The Shamrocks used a 8-3 second-half run to emerge from their season-opener against St Rita with an 12-6 victory. Eric Johnson scored 5 goals and Christopher McMahon made 14 saves in the loss for the Mustangs.

Mother McAuley 17 LWC 6

Clare Bryar registered 5 scores and Kristen Kleist netted 3 goals in Mother McAuley's 17-6 win over LWC. Mary June O'Connell and Vicky Arciniega each added 2 scores and Sarah Abbott blocked 7 shots in the season-opening win for the Mighty Macs. Danijela Jackovich scored 2 times in the loss for the Knights.

 

Marian 15 DeLaSalle 4

Paige Weiser scored 4 goals and Sophie Sesto added 3 scores as eight different players recorded goals in the Spartans' 15-4 victory over DeLaSalle in the Catholic League opener for both teams. Diana Fernandez and Isabelle Keating also tallied 2 scores apiece in the win for Marian. Destiny Guerrero and Mikie Kotiba each scored 2 times in the loss for the Meteors, who were playing in their first-ever contest.

 

St Ignatius 13 St Viator 5

Diana Fernandez scored 5 goals in her debut and both Maggie Maloney and Rebecca Insalaco each added 3 scores as St Ignatius downed St Viator 13-5. Tammy Stelnicki notched 2 scores and Jenny Stelnicki held the Lions' offense to just three total goals. Danielle Mantich and Theresa Cariola also registered one goal apiece in the Wolfpack victory.

 

STC North 12 Schaumburg 2

Nicole Guyett recorded 4 goals and Sarah Stern added 3 goals and 4 assists as the North Stars defeated Schaumburg 12-2 on Monday night. Kelsey Theile and Lauren Gonsalves each tallied 2 scores and goalie Hannah Horsfall denied 7 shots in the win. Ashley Johnson scored both goals in the loss for the Saxons.

 

Whitney Young 9 Northside 4

Jessie Cronin scored 4 goals and Nya Wilkins blocked 11 shots and totaled 5 steals as the Dolphins recovered from a slow start to earn a 9-4 early-season win over CPS rival Northside Prep on Monday evening. Gabby Chelette registered 3 goals and Audrey Anderson notched 2 scores in the victory.
