2014 SECTIONALS


More than 150 boys and girls teams will begin their quest for a chance to advance to the state tournament, starting with the sectional play-in games on May 12 & 13.

 

The boys' quarterfinal action starts on May 14, followed by the girls' quarterfinal games on May 15. The sectional semifinals are played on May 16, with the sectional final games all taking place on Saturday, May 17.

Links to every sectional site are provided below. These will be updated continuously with schedules, game times, and scores/recaps throughout the week of sectionals. At the end of the week, we will have Sectional Ballers and the All-Sectional Teams (as soon as they are submitted to us from each sectional site).

GAME RECAPS (Wednesday, May 14)

 

 

 

GBS SECTIONAL

Loyola 12 Maine East 3

Cameron Shewchuck scored 4 times and Jack Schermerhorn notched 2 scores to help lift the Ramblers over Maine East. Loyola raced out to an 8-1 halftime lead en route to the victory. Mike Babula recorded 2 goals and Mateo Kozomara tacked on one score in the loss for the Blue Demons.

 

New Trier 14 Glenbrook North 7

Alex Grant totaled 4 goals and Michael Krueger scored 3 times to help the Trevians knock off GBN 14-7. John Roberts put in 3 goals in the loss for the Spartans.

 

Glenbrook South 16 Evanston 8

Brant Boczek, Jake Nelson, and Seamus Heneghan all scored 4 goals in the Titans' 16-8 triumph over Evanston. Liam O'Connor led the Wildkits with 4 goals in the losing effort.

 

Niles West 15 Maine South 11

Max Yusim notched 6 scores and Steven Renko totaled 5 goals, 4 assists, and 6 steals as Niles West got past Maine South 15-11 on Wednesday evening. Kyle Patt also contributed 4 goals to the winning cause for the Wolves.

LWC SECTIONAL

Sandburg 12 Lincoln-Way East 6

Zach Roper totaled 7 goals, both Ben Crnich and Mitch Zieler scored 2 times, Zieler chipped in with 5 assists, and Sean McNicholas blocked 9 shots as the Eagles beat LWE 12-6. Sandburg trailed 4-2 after the opening quarter, but they outscored the Griffins 6-1 in the second quarter and 4-1 in the second half to secure the win.

 

Lincoln-Way Central 16 Homewood-Flossmoor 5

Tristan Funk registered 4 goals and both Pat Burke and Tim Stygar netted 3 goals as the Knights used an 8-0 run to close out the first half to pull away from the Vikings and eliminate last year's sectional champs 16-5. Jakobi McClellan blocked 21 shots, Haden Santefort scored 4 goals, and Broc Thompson put in one score in the loss for H-F.

 

Lockport 12 Lincoln-Way North 5

Jake Speechley scored 3 goals and Zach Elias scored 2 times to help the Porters emerge with a 12-5 win over LWN on Wednesday.

 

Andrew 18 Bradley 9

Alex Gacek scored 6 goals, Chuck Walters recorded 5 scores, and Eric Tamulonis totaled 4 goals and 5 assists as the T-Bolts outscored the Boilers 11-4 in the second half to emerge with an 18-9 win. Andrew Wojdyla contributed 2 goals and 5 steals and Dan Cavato also added a goal for the winners. Nick Dalzell led the Boilers' offense with 5 goals and both Carlos Leal and Zach Zahrobsky scored 2 times in the loss.

LYONS SECTIONAL

Fenwick 21 Taft 1

All 21 players scored for Fenwick and Mike Hill made 11 saves and did not allow a goal until the third period of the Friars' 21-1 victory over Taft.

 

St Patrick 18 Morton 6

Joseph Gibson recorded 6 goals and Conor O'Rourke netted 4 scores as the Shamrocks defeated Morton 18-6 on Wednesday.

 

Oak Park 16 R-B 7

James Kelly totaled 4 goals, Mark Hallman scored 3 times, and Kiernan Kelty added 2 goals as Oak Park defeated R-B 16-7.

 

 

METEA VALLEY SECTIONAL

Naperville North 17 Hinsdale Central 2

Garrett Nash and Nolan Roberts both scored 4 goals, Gianmarco Duin scored 3 times, and both Drake McClure and Joe Cassano notched 2 scores as the Huskies held the Red Devils scoreless through the final three periods to earn a 17-2 win. Andrew Rocco and David Holzer each added a goal in the win for North.

 

Neuqua Valley 15 Waubonsie Valley 12

Simon Shatinsky poured in 9 goals to lead the Wildcats to a 15-12 victory over Waubonsie Valley. Joey Dalesandro totaled 3 goals and 10 steals, Scott DePuy added 2 scores, and both Carter Edwards and Ian Ivkovich scored once for the winners. John Hedderman also blocked 12 shots and made 4 steals for NV.

 

York 10 STC North 9 (OT)

Wil Hubert scored the game-winning goal with :19 left in overtime to send the Dukes past the North Stars 10-9 on Wednesday night. Timmy Matsas delivered the assist on the key goal, which helped York move on to the sectional semifinals for a matchup with Naperville Central. Hubert and Matsas both recorded 4 goals, Ben Howlett and Matt Rodriguez each scored once, and Matt Bindeman made 7 saves in the victory. Ross Davis led the North Stars with 4 goals and Collin Bawolek blocked 11 shots in the loss.

 

 

MUNDELEIN SECTIONAL

Stevenson 21 Lake Forest 8

Alex Divanyan and Mitchell Sokolsky both recorded 5 goals as Stevenson defeated Lake Forest 21-8.

 

Barrington 11 McHenry 7

Chase Lesniak totaled 3 goals and drew 4 ejections and the trio of Marshall Mathias, Nick Cogswell, and Sam Miseyka each scored 2 goals as the Broncos pulled away from McHenry in the second half to earn an 11-7 win. Barrington overcame an early 4-3 deficit and a 15-minute delay due to a clock malfunction to advance to the semifinal round. Theo Papadimitriou made 13 saves and both Mitch Gavars and Tom Derken scored once in the winning effort.

 

Libertyville 10 Wheeling 4

Pat King registered 3 goals and both Alex Kratcoski and Bobby Snader put in 2 goals to help Libertyville fend off Wheeling 10-4. Nate Reiff led the Wildcats with 3 goals in the losing effort.

 

Mundelein 15 Vernon Hills 5

Jude Krauss totaled 6 goals, Mike Ward pumped in 3 scores, and Alfonso Ochoa blocked 13 shots and put in one goal as the Mustangs defeated Vernon Hills 15-5. Kyle Siebert netted 2 goals while Andrew Gray and Matt Schadel each tallied one score in the Mundelein win. Nikita Mikhaylov scored 3 times in the loss for the Cougars.

PALATINE SECTIONAL

Palatine 26 Elk Grove 4

Kristian Kalev recorded 8 goals and Wally Kleinfeldt notched 7 scores to lead Palatine to a 26-4 win over Elk Grove. Omar El Hoffi and Mike Yurcheshin each added 3 goals in the winning effort. Ryan Mockus and Ryan Schlaiss also scored 2 times for the Pirates. Adam Doruff tallied 3 scores in the losing effort for the Grenadiers.

 

Conant 12 St Viator 9

Connor Schmitz and Cody Yelsar each scored 3 goals to lead the Cougars over St Viator 12-9. Braden Lamare, Kazuki Morita and Jim Estep both added 2 goals in the winning effort. Eric Sutton registered 3 goals while Keegan Finn, Shea Boyer, and Tommy Madaras each put in 2 goals in the loss for the Lions.

 

Hersey 15 Schaumburg 14

Jack Carroll scored 5 goals and both George Vladimirov and Michael Buffa notched 4 scores as Hersey staved off a late rally from Schaumburg with a strong defensive finish to beat the Saxons 15-14. Connor Reynolds and Jake Hall each tallied one score in the win for the Huskies. Jack Pyde totaled 4 goals, James Birriel netted 3 scores, and the trio of Dan Skiroock, Michael Walsh and Tyler Gustafson each recorded 2 goals in the loss for Schaumburg. Austin Borst also scored once in the losing effort.

 

Fremd 17 Prospect 7

Dylan Assman registered 9 goals and Luke Stark tallied 3 scores as the Vikings upset Prospect 17-7 in the sectional quarterfinals at Palatine. Connor Helsdingen and Zach Starkey also netted 2 goals in the win for Fremd.

 

 

STAGG SECTIONAL

Curie 19 Argo 1

Manny Martinez recorded 6 goals and Ivan Ariza netted 5 scores as Curie rolled past Argo 19-1.

 

Brother Rice 24 Shepard 6

Dan Birmingham and James Ryan both scored 6 goals as the Crusaders cruised to a 24-6 victory over Shepard. Zack Sierzega tallied 2 scores in the loss for the Astros.

 

Stagg 21 Mt Carmel 7

Connor Kaufmann and Zack Amendola each recorded 4 goals to lead the Chargers to a 21-7 win over Mt Carmel. Lane Holin also stopped 11 shots in the win for Stagg. Danny Luchsinger netted 4 scores in the loss for the Caravan.

 

St Rita 20 Morgan Park 6

Joe Qualter scored 4 times as part of a group effort on the offensive end as St Rita topped Morgan Park 20-6. Christian Cooper scored 4 goals in the losing effort.

 

 

UIC SECTIONAL

St Ignatius 14 Jones-Payton 4

Shane Hughes scored 3 goals, both Billy Barth and John Reyes tallied 2 scores, and Tym Zymon stopped 9 shots as the Wolfpack defeated Jones-Payton 14-4 to advance to the semifinals of their own sectional.

 

Northside 11 Lane 5

Connor Gillespie totaled 5 goals and Sacramento Chavez notched 3 scores as the Mustangs got past Lane 11-5 on Wednesday. Alex Carreon and Ben Martinez both tallied 2 goals in the loss for the Indians.

 

DLS 13 Von Steuben 3

Danny Pedro tallied 5 goals and Angelo Espinoza, Jeremy Siegel, and Vinny Scalise all chipped in with 2 goals in the Meteors' 13-3 win over Von Steuben. Claude Allen netted 2 goals in the losing effort.

 

Latin 11 Whitney Young 10

Steve Grotewold notched 5 goals and Jacob Hirshman netted 3 goals as the Romans surprised Young by earning an 11-10 victory on Wednesday. Josh Escasa tallied 5 goals, Tony Romo recorded 2 goals, and Matt Gonzalez made 10 saves in the losing effort.
