Several teams have good reason to be optimistic in 2016. Some have gone through the rebuilding process while others are finally putting things together to make a run at their best season in team history. Let's take a closer look at the teams that could be considered 'The Underdogs' this season:

Goalkeeper: Lindsey Fernandez

Final 2015 Ranking: 36th


First Contest: March 7 vs Hinsdale Central

Key Tournaments: Bremen, Hersey, WSC


2015 Verdict: Morton finished the season with a 14-11 record and bowed out of the sectional playoffs after a quarterfinal loss to Riverside-Brookfield.


Head Coach: Wyatt Jansen

Players to Watch: Abby Smedley, Ali Rudin, Emily Garza, Shealyn Streder

First Contest: March 7 vs Hinsdale South

Key Tournaments: Metea, Naperville North, Neuqua


2015 Verdict: The Mustangs (11-11-2) earned a playoff-opening victory over Lockport before falling at the hands of top-seeded Naperville North at the Neuqua Valley Sectional.


Head Coach: Mac Varilla

Key Players: Dallas Broderson, Haley Gibbs, Meredith Lohman, Nicole Culver

Players to Watch: Lindsay Opie, Sandra Fortoso

Goalkeeper: Alina Hillery

Final 2015 Ranking: 44th

Key Tournaments: CPS, Deerfield


2015 Verdict: The Lady Eagles (16-10) won the third-place game in the CPS Tournament but lost in the quarterfinals to Northside at the St Ignatius Sectional.

Goalkeeper: Abbey Hodges

Final 2015 Ranking: 43rd


First Contest: March 9 at Lake Forest

Key Tournaments: CSL, Deerfield, GBN, Maine South, Vernon Hills


2015 Verdict: Highland Park ended the previous season with a 14-11 record and secured a playoff win over Vernon Hills before losing to the eventual state champions (Stevenson) in the next round.


Head Coach: Andrew Helgeson

Key Players: Arielle Elliott, Jordan Ritter, Kenzie Chalifoux, Maggie Goodman, Regan Warmoth

Players to Watch: Brittany Payne, Lexi Fischer

Goalkeeper: Meagan Arseneau

First Contest: March 18 at Maine South Tournament

Key Tournaments: Maine East, Maine South, Mundelein, Neuqua


2015 Verdict: Bradley went 10-19 in the previous campaign and were eliminated by the eventual state qualifiers (LWC) in the LWN Sectional's quarterfinal round.

First Contest: March 7 vs Curie

Key Tournaments: CPS, Deerfield, York, Young


2015 Verdict: The Dolphins (6-11) came up short against York in last year's sectional quarterfinal round at Fenwick.

Goalkeeper: Maddie Bollinger

First Contest: March 8 at Deerfield

Key Tournaments: Barrington, Elk Grove, GBN, Maine South, Naperville North


2015 Verdict: The Wildcats (13-16) were knocked out of the postseason by Wheeling in the quarterfinal round at the Buffalo Grove Sectional.

First Contest: March 9 vs Palatine

Key Tournaments: GBS, Hersey, MSL


2015 Verdict: Hersey finished the previous season with a 8-15 mark; they lost a sectional quarterfinal contest with Prospect in last year's playoffs.

Goalkeeper: Abby Schwarz

First Contest: March 9 vs Morton

Key Tournaments: Barrington, LWE, R-B


2015 Verdict: The Bulldogs (11-19) earned a sectional quarterfinal victory over Morton at the Fenwick Sectional before falling to the hosts in the semifinal round.

2015 Verdict: The T-Bolts (5-22) campaign culminated with a sectional victory over Marian and a quarterfinal round loss to top-seeded Bremen at the LWN Sectional.

2015 Verdict: The Chargers (12-14) secured a sectional quarterfinal round victory over Richards then lost to the eventual sectional winners (Lyons) in the semifinals.
