TOURNAMENT RECAP (April 4-6)

 

Thursday's Game Recaps

St Ignatius 14 St Thomas 4

Tammy Stelnicki scored 4 goals and Rebecca Martinez added 3 scores as St Ignatius rolled to an 14-4 win over St Thomas. Becky Insalaco also netted 2 goals in the tournament-opening win for the Wolfpack.

 

New Trier 7 Lyons 5

Kelsey Willian scored 3 goals to help lead New Trier past Lyons 7-5 on Thursday. The Trevians responded to an early 2-1 deficit with a 5-2 run to emerge with the victory. Blair Hopwood scored 3 times in the loss for the Lions.

 

St Ignatius 24 Stevenson 11

Becky Insalaco poured in 8 goals as the Wolfpack raced out to a 9-0 lead en route to a 24-11 victory over Stevenson. Rebecca Martinez put in 5 goals and Maggie Maloney, Tammy Stelnicki, and Theresa Cariola each added 2 goals in the win for SICP. Ashley Oliver and Melissa Gartenberg both scored 3 times and Allison Travetto and Laura Larsen each tallied 2 scores in the loss for the Patriots.

 

Mundelein 12 Naperville Central 9

Karrie Kozokar recorded 5 goals to lead the Mustangs to a 12-9 victory over Naperville Central. Kristina Altuve, Kaela Codo, and Michelle Spaits each scored 2 times in the loss for the Redhawks.

 

Fenwick 15 New Trier 4

Cara Borkovec registered 5 goals and Colleen Barron put in 4 scores as Fenwick started their own event with a 15-4 victory over New Trier. Catie Wallace also scored 2 times in the Friars' win. Kaitlin Medland led the Trevians with 2 scores, while Kara Lucenti and Kelsey Willian both notched one goal in the loss.

 

Mundelein 9 Loyola 6

The Mustangs advanced to the semifinal round after beating Loyola 9-6 on Thursday, their second victory of the night. Karrie Kozakar led the way for Mundelein with 5 goals, while Allison Boothe scored 2 times in the win. Evan Swenson scored 4 goals, Marta Considine tallied 2 scores, and Colleen Ahern stopped 9 shots in the loss for the Ramblers.

 

Friday's Game Recaps

Fenwick 9 Lyons 4

Cara Borkovec scored 3 times and Genevieve Curry netted 2 scores in Fenwick's 9-4 win over LT. Alexa Ovalle, Addy Curry, Colleen Barron, and Paige Kohut each added one goal in the Friars' win. Julia Cohen, Blair Hopwood, Carly Strass, and Molly McDonnell all tallied one score in the loss for the Lions.

 

Mother McAuley 11 Evanston 1

Clare Bryar registered 3 scores and both Emily Bowens and Kristen Kleist recorded 2 goals as the Mighty Macs cruised to an 11-1 victory over Evanston. Yasi Nassiri scored the lone goal for the Wildkits.

 

Naperville Central 16 Loyola 11

Kristina Altuve scored 6 goals and both Leslie Calabrese and Madison Nervig both added 3 scores as the Redhawks bounced back from a slow start to beat Loyola 16-11 on Friday night. Central trailed 4-1 after the first quarter but caught the Ramblers in the second half and closed the game with a 6-1 run to earn the victory. Jessica Fox totaled 19 saves and Nervig made 5 steals in the Redhawks' win. Evan Swenson tallied 6 goals and Marta Considine added 5 scores in the loss, while Meredith O'Brien stopped 11 shots for the Ramblers.

 

Mother McAuley 13 H-F 3

Kristen Kleist recorded 3 goals and both Clare Bryar and Emily Bowens notched 2 scores as McAuley beat H-F 13-3 on Friday. Megan Dunlavy scored 2 goals in the loss for the Vikings.

 

Stevenson 18 St Thomas 6

Ashley Oliver tallied 4 scores and Allison Travetto, Brittany Gartenberg, and Laura Larsen each added 3 goals as the Patriots topped St Thomas 18-6.

 

Evanston 8 H-F 6

Yasi Nassiri poured in 6 goals to lead the Wildkits to an 8-6 victory over H-F. Claire Duncan and Maddy Morris both netted 2 scores in the loss for the Vikings.

 

Saturday's Game Recaps

Loyola 11 Lyons 7

Katie Lynch scored 7 goals and Evan Swenson added 3 scores as Loyola held off Lyons 11-7 on Saturday morning. Blair Hopwood tallied 4 scores in the loss for the Lions.

 

New Trier 8 Naperville Central 3

Alexana Astor and Kelsey Willian both recorded 3 goals in New Trier's 8-3 victory over Naperville Central. Michelle Spaits led the Redhawks with 2 goals in the loss.

 

Fenwick 14 Mundelein 6

Maggie Sheean registered 3 scores and Alexa Ovalle, Catie Wallace, Genevieve Curry, and Paige Kohut all scored 2 times in the Friars' 14-6 triumph over Mundelein. Karrie Kozokar scored 4 goals in the loss for the Mustangs.

 

H-F 6 St Thomas 5

Amber Barney, Annie Schloen, and Claire Duncan all scored 2 times as H-F grabbed their first win of the event by beating St Thomas 6-5.

 

Stevenson 13 Evanston 3

Ashley Oliver, Brittany Gartenberg, and Melissa Gartenberg each put in 3 goals to lead the Patriots to a 13-3 victory over Evanston.

 

St Ignatius 9 Mother McAuley 5

Rebecca Martinez recorded 5 goals and Becky Insalaco drew 9 ejections as St Ignatius defeated Mother McAuley 9-5 on Saturday to advance to the title game of the Fenwick Tournament. Karen Juarez, Tammy Stelnicki, Diana Fernandez, and Maggie Maloney each chipped in with one goal for the winners. The Macs were led by Clare Bryar's 3 goals, while Fran Williamson and Vicky Arciniega also scored one goal apiece.

 

Lyons 10 St Thomas 5 (11th place)

Blair Hopwood tallied 4 scores and Carly Strass put in 2 goals to lead Lyons to a 10-5 win over St Thomas in the eleventh-place game on Saturday.

 

Loyola 14 H-F 6 (9th place)

Allison Sajnaj recorded 9 goals and Marta Considine netted 2 scores as Loyola upended H-F 14-6. Claire Duncan and Maddy Morris each scored 2 times in the loss for the Vikings.

 

Naperville Central 14 Evanston 6 (7th place)

Michelle Spaits recorded 7 goals, Kaela Codo netted 3 scores, and Madison Nervig scored 2 times as the Redhawks wrapped up seventh place with a 14-6 win over Evanston. Yasi Nassiri scored all 6 goals in the loss for the Wildkits.

 

Stevenson 5 New Trier 4 (5th place)

Alex Kanaris pushed in a rebound goal at the buzzer to give Stevenson a 5-4 victory over New Trier. She totaled 3 goals and Ashley Oliver added 2 scores in the Patriots' win. Alexana Astor recorded 2 goals and both Kelsey Willian and Kaitlin Medland scored once in the loss for the Trevians.

 

Mother McAuley 12 Mundelein 5 (3rd place)

Clare Bryar, Kristen Kleist, and Vicky Arciniega each scored 3 goals to lead Mother McAuley to a 12-5 win over Mundelein. Fran Williamson also scored 2 times and Amy Kopale added one goal for the event's third place finishers. Karrie Kozokar scored 3 goals and both Courtney Perrault and Michelle Barron chipped in with one goal in the losing effort.

 

Fenwick 6 St Ignatius 6 (1st place)

Catie Wallace put Fenwick ahead midway through the fourth quarter, but Diana Fernandez tied the game with 2:07 remaining as the tournament's two undefeated teams finished in a 6-6 draw on Saturday. The Wolfpack had the last chance to win the game, but Lexi Buglio blocked Jenny Stelnicki's last-ditch effort that was heading for the bottom left corner of the goal at the buzzer. Cara Borkovec led Fenwick with 3 goals, while Wallace, Colleen Barron, and Janette Angelini each scored once for the Friars. Insalaco put in 2 goals for SICP, while Fernandez, Karen Juarez, Maggie Maloney, and Rebecca Martinez each scored one goal for the Wolfpack. Jenny Stelnicki also stopped 10 shots for St Ignatius. The two teams play again on Monday night in a Catholic League fixture.
