GAME PREVIEWS (Friday, March 27)

 

 

 

FEATURED EVENT

YORK TOURNAMENT

The Dukes host an ultra-competitive, eight-team tournament that features several of the state's Top 25 teams plus Missouri's SLUH. The hosts begin play in a group with Fenwick, Lyons and St Ignatius while SLUH is joined by Loyola, Mundelein and New Trier. Group play continues from Friday into Saturday morning before the championship round begins early on Saturday afternoon. The visitors from Missouri beat Fenwick in overtime last year to win the event.

 

OTHER KEY EVENTS

NILES WEST TOURNAMENT

The Wolves will try to repeat as tournament champions of their own event when they host an eight-team event that kicks off on Friday afternoon. Niles West plays in a group that contains Maine West, St Rita, and Waubonsie Valley; the other group pits DLS, Metea Valley, Stagg and Von Steuben against one another. The championship round decides the fate of all eight teams and begins on Saturday afternoon.

 

NORTHSIDE TOURNAMENT

Northside's annual tournament gets started on Saturday morning with four schools mixing it up in a six-game event. The hosts are joined by Bradley, Morgan Park and Prosser.

 

ST PATRICK TOURNAMENT

The Shamrocks' tournament features a dynamic group of competitive teams with Bremen, Brother Rice, Evanston, H-F, LWE and Maine South leading the list of contenders. The seven teams will play a grand total of 16 games over the weekend at an event that the hosts won last season.

FEATURED EVENT

LINCOLN-WAY TOURNAMENT

Lincoln-Way East's annual bracket-style tournament kicks off on Friday night with two pools being used to host games. The opening-round winners will meet in the semifinal round before the night is over, with the winners playing for the title at East on Saturday afternoon. LWE won the event in 2014.

 

OTHER KEY EVENTS

LYONS TOURNAMENT

Lyons welcomes Bremen, Evanston, GBS, Mundelein and Neuqua Valley to Lagrange for a six-team event that begins on Saturday morning. The hosts won the event with an overtime victory over Stevenson last year.

 

SALINE TOURNAMENT

Stevenson's weekend in Michigan gets started on Friday with two matches against Huron and Okemos. Oak Park joins the fray on Saturday with a trio of games against Dexter, Pioneer and Saline before the Patriots end the weekend with a contest against Skyline.

YORK TOURNAMENT

SLUH 18 Mundelein 7

Colin Derdeyn poured in 7 goals, Michael Niese notched 3 scores, and Patrick Schuler scored 2 times as SLUH kicked off the weekend with an 18-7 victory over Mundelein. Mike Ward tallied 3 scores and Jeremy Westgate scored 2 goals in the loss.

 

Fenwick 16 York 3

DJ Perez totaled 5 goals and both Danny Farmer and Jack Mahoney scored 2 times as Fenwick defeated York 16-3. Danny Stumpf netted 2 goals and Parker Hicks scored once for the hosts.

 

Loyola 12 Mundelein 4

Andrew Hodur scored 3 times and the trio of Jack Schermerhorn, John Pasquesi, and Ragen Murphy each put in 2 goals as the Ramblers defeated Mundelein 12-4. Mike Ward notched 3 scores in the loss for the Mustangs.

 

SLUH 19 New Trier 7

Colin Derdeyn totaled 10 goals and Christoper Kreinkamp scored 2 goals as Missouri's top-ranked team beat New Trier 19-7. Alex Grant put in 3 goals while Charlie Ryan, Henry Yavitt, Jackson Ingle and Mason McQuet each added one score in the losing effort.

 

Lyons 14 York 6

Sam Szcepaniak notched 5 scores and George Lundgren connected on 4 shots to help the Lions get past the hosts 14-6. Alex Marlott and Logan Frendreis each scored 2 times in the loss for the Dukes.

 

Fenwick 19 St Ignatius 5

Andrew Bertschy scored 6 times and Ryan Masi slotted home 5 goals as the Friars beat St Ignatius 19-5 for their second win this week over the Wolfpack. Danny Farmer and Jack Mahoney each chipped in with 2 scores for Fenwick. Enrique Leon and Shane Hughes both scored 2 times in the loss for SICP.

 

Loyola 9 New Trier 6

Jack Schermerhorn and Ragen Murphy both scored 3 goals to lead the Ramblers to a 9-6 win over New Trier on Friday night. George Harris and John Pasquesi each tallied one score in the win. Alex Grant put in 2 goals while Chandler Tempest, Chris Keller, Michael Krueger, and Will Kohr each chipped in with one goal apiece in the loss.

 

Lyons 17 St Ignatius 5

George Lundgren notched 6 scores and both Sam Szcepaniak and Tommy Kaptur scored 3 times to lead the Lions to a 17-5 victory over St Ignatius in the late game on Friday night. Anthony Berley and Mike Zahorik each added 2 scores in the win. Shane Hughes tallied 3 scores and both Brendan Stelmach and Gunnar Glaab scored once in the loss for the Wolfpack.

 

 

NILES WEST TOURNAMENT

Niles West 13 Maine West 3

Max Yusim scored 6 goals, including four in the opening quarter, as the Wolves jumped out to a 9-1 lead en route to a 13-3 victory over Maine West. Matt Lefler totaled 8 saves and 6 steals while Yusim drew 4 ejections for the hosts.

 

St Rita 11 Waubonsie Valley 10

Matt Lopez netted 5 goals and Eric Johnson recorded 4 scores to lead the Mustangs to an 11-10 comeback win over Waubonsie Valley. Cameron Steele totaled 8 goals in the loss for the Warriors.

 

DLS 15 Metea Valley 2

Roberto Rodriguez recorded 5 goals to lead the Meteors to a 15-2 victory over Metea Valley.

 

Niles West 17 Waubonsie Valley 7

Max Yusim scored 4 goals and drew 5 ejections and Matt Lefler blocked 11 shots and forced 7 turnovers to lead the Wolves to a 17-7 win over Waubonsie Valley. Miguel Paloma also scored 3 times in the win for the hosts. Cameron Steele led the Warriors with 6 goals in the losing effort.

 

Stagg 15 Metea Valley 7

Nick Amendola totaled 6 goals to lead the Chargers past Metea Valley 15-7.

 

 

ST PATRICK TOURNAMENT

St Patrick 11 Lincoln-Way East 1

Joseph Gibson recorded 4 goals, Jason Schuler added 3 scores, and Tim Noble blocked 16 shots as the Shamrocks defeated LWE 11-1. Andrew Ciszek also scored 2 times while Anthony Barsano and Michael Taylor each chipped in with one score in the win.

 

Homewood-Flossmoor 13 Maine South 1

Haden Santefort registered 6 goals and both Michael Bonthron and Travis Tanner scored 2 goals apiece as the Vikings earned a 13-1 win over Maine South.  Jonny Schmidt chipped in with 6 assists and Bonthron made 6 steals for the victors.

Aoife Burke, Beth Koson, and Deanna Koeckritz each scored 2 goals and Catherine Stouffer stopped 10 shots as the T-Bolts knocked off Richards 9-5. Alexys Knight, Cailey Pietrzyk, and Jessica Gomes all added one score in the winning effort.

 

Lincoln-Way North 10 R-B 0

Cassidy Degraff and Julia Porco both tallied 3 scores, Sarah Jackson put in 2 goals and Laura Wolf earned a shutout as the Phoenix blanked R-B 10-0. Emily Cheshire and Emma Henley each scored once while the defense was paced by Degraff's 11 steals on Friday night.

 

Lincoln-Way East 11 Andrew 5

Nicole McCabe and the Griffins' offense proved too difficult to stop for Andrew on Friday night as the host claimed an 11-5 win to advance to Saturday's championship game against LWC. Aoife Burke and Deanna Koeckritz each tallied 2 scores, Beth Koson scored once, and Catherine Stouffer made 10 saves in the losing effort.

 

Lincoln-Way Central 5 Lincoln-Way North 3

Cailey Davern recorded 2 goals while Alli Ramirez, Delaney Shepard, and Kimmie Bernhard each scored once as the Knights fended off LWN 5-3 on Friday night. Cassidy Degraff, Emily Cheshire, and Julia Porco each scored once in the loss for the Phoenix.

 

 

SALINE TOURNAMENT

Stevenson 11 Saline 4

Melissa Gartenberg scored 5 goals and Allison Travetto added 3 scores to lead the Patriots to an 11-4 win over the tournament hosts on Friday afternoon.

 

Stevenson 15 Okemos 4

Allison Travetto and Melissa Gartenberg both scored 4 goals and Autumn Hoang notched 3 scores to lead the Patriots past Okemos 15-4 on Friday night. Annika Hotchkiss added 2 scores while both Claire Haas and Erin Kempers scored one time in the winning effort.
