GAME PREVIEWS (Saturday, May 3)

 

 

 

FEATURED EVENT

STEVENSON TOURNAMENT

The Patriots host a crucial late-season tournament that often serves as a preview of the state tournament. This year is no exception, as seven of the top ten teams will play in Lincolnshire, including #2 Fenwick, #3 Loyola, the fifth-ranked hosts, #6 Oak Park, #7 Naperville Central, #8 Lyons, and #10 Palatine. #15 New Trier and #28 Brother Rice are also in the mix. The defending state champions (Fenwick) will be looking to reclaim the title after losing to LT 9-5 last season in the virtual title game, while the rest of the stacked field will be looking to showcase their abilities as the season has entered the homestretch.

 

OTHER KEY EVENTS

CONANT TOURNAMENT

Conant hosts a nine-team, eighteen-game event with an eccentric mix of teams that start play on Friday and continue throughout the day on Saturday. The Cougars are joined by BG, Lane, Libertyville, LWN, Maine West, Niles West, Neuqua and Northside for the festivities.

 

STC NORTH TOURNAMENT

The North Stars welcome Hersey, St Rita, Vernon Hills, and Whitney Young for a five-team, seven game event that kicks off at 8:30am on Saturday morning.

 

YORK TOURNAMENT

The Dukes' Co-Ed Tourney is an all-day event that features Bremen, DLS, Maine East and the hosts in a six-game event beginning at 8:50am and alternating between boys' and girls' contests.

ROCKFORD TOURNAMENT

Fenwick and Lincoln-Way Central travel across state lines to participate in the Rockford Tournament, an event featuring several of the top teams in Michigan (#1 Okemos, #3 Hudsonville, #4 Zeeland). Can #1 Fenwick and #22 LWC continue their success against their Michigan counterparts after the Friars won the event last year and the Knights finished in third place?

NAPERVILLE NORTH TOURNAMENT

The Huskies' mini-tournament features three teams and three games; both Fremd and Libertyville are in town beginning at 9:00am with a matchup between the hosts and the Vikings.

 

YORK TOURNAMENT

The Dukes' Co-Ed Tourney is an all-day event that features Latin, Oak Park, Whitney Young and the hosts in a six-game event beginning at 8:00am and alternating between boys' and girls' contests.

CONANT TOURNAMENT

Neuqua Valley 7 Lincoln-Way North 4

Simon Shatinsky totaled 4 goals, Joey Dalesandro added 2 scores, and Austin Mollway made 8 saves as the Wildcats beat LWN 7-4. Shatinsky and Dalesandro both made 4 steals and Carter Edwards scored one goal in the win.

 

Maine West 10 Lane 9

The Warriors scored twice in the last two minutes to stun Lane 10-9 on Saturday. Mark Gullickson scored 5 goals and Max Boettcher tallied 3 scores in the loss. Israel Valle also scored one goal for the Indians.

 

Neuqua Valley 16 Northside 5

Joey Dalesandro scored 5 goals, Simon Shatinsky netted 4 goals, and Brett Whaley scored 3 times as the Wildcats defeated Northside 16-5 to advance to the first-place bracket of the Conant Tournament. Austin Mollway blocked 12 shots in the winning effort.

 

Niles West 13 Buffalo Grove 3

Kyle Patt scored 4 goals and Steven Renko totaled 3 goals and 4 assists to help the Wolves secure a 13-3 victory over BG. Matt Lefler made 10 saves and added 6 steals in the winning effort.

 

Lane 11 Northside 5

Roberto Millan-Ayala recorded 3 goals and Ben Martinez, Mark Gullickson, and Max Boettcher each tallied 2 scores in Lane's 11-5 triumph over Northside. Israel Valle and Peter Proctor both scored once in the win for the Indians. Connor Gillespie netted 3 goals in the loss for the Mustangs.

 

Neuqua Valley 11 Libertyville 6

Simon Shatinsky netted 4 goals and Ian Ivkovich put in 3 scores as Neuqua Valley earned an 11-6 victory over Libertyville to setup a Saturday night title game with Conant. Lucas Becker added 2 goals, Brandon Gorski and Troy Salafatinos each scored once, Joey Dalesandro totaled 7 steals and 4 assists, and Austin Mollway blocked 6 shots in the win.

 

Neuqua Valley 12 Conant 11

Simon Shatinsky scored 4 goals, Joey Dalesandro tallied 3 scores, and Austin Mollway made 12 saves as the Wildcats defeated Conant 12-11 in the title game of the event. Lucas Becker added 2 goals and both Scott DePuy and Troy Salafatinos netted one score in the Neuqua win.

 

 

CPS TOURNAMENT

Taft 18 Westinghouse 14

Ricardo Navarro poured in 10 goals to help Taft beat Westinghouse 18-14. Anfernee Sturdivant scored 8 times in the loss for the Warriors.

 

Von Steuben 16 Simeon 6

Alejandro Altamirano, Claude Allen, Emir Carkovic, and Tyson Dean each scored 2 goals to help Von get past Simeon 16-6.

 

Jones-Payton 15 Mather 6

Jared Williams totaled 6 goals, Steven Fitzgerald notched 4 scores, and Will Macellaio tallied 2 scores as the Eagles defeated Mather 15-6.

 

 

STC NORTH TOURNAMENT

Hersey 12 St Rita 11

Jack Carroll scored 4 goals and Connor Reynolds netted 3 goals as the Huskies earned a 12-11 comeback win over St Rita on Saturday morning. John Hall also scored 2 times in the win. Chuck Henrichs scored 4 goals, Eric Johnson added 3 goals, and Dan Slizais tallied 2 scores in the loss for the Mustangs.

 

STC North 11 Whitney Young 2

John Pretet and Nick Traxler each scored 3 times and Collin Bawolek blocked 8 shots to help the hosts get past the Dolphins 11-2. Chris Stanek added 2 goals and both Ross Davis and Tim Steele scored once for the North Stars. Juan Reyes and Tony Romo each scored once in the loss for Young.

 

St Rita 20 Vernon Hills 13

Dan Slizais poured in 6 goals and Chuck Henrichs netted 5 scores as St Rita defeated Vernon Hills 20-13. Eric Johnson added 3 scores while Dan Carone, Kevin Cronin, and Matt Lopez each tallied 2 scores. Nikita Mikhaylov led the Cougars with 3 goals and the trio of Kim Richard, Saad Maki, and Sean Pinter all scored 2 times in the losing effort.

 

Hersey 16 Vernon Hills 12

Jack Carroll netted 5 goals and both Connor Reynolds and Michael Buffa scored 3 times in Hersey's 16-12 victory over Vernon Hills. George Vladimirov also scored 2 goals in the win. Kim Richard scored 3 goals and Conrad Kocoj, Nikita Mikhaylov, and Patrick Pranica each tallied 2 scores for the Cougars.

 

St Rita 14 Whitney Young 11

Chuck Henrichs poured in 8 goals and both Eric Johnson and Matt Lopez scored 3 times to lead St Rita to a 14-11 victory over Whitney Young. Duncan McDonald netted 5 goals and Juan Reyes scored 2 goals in the loss for the Dolphins. Hector Mendez also added 2 goals for Young.

 

STC North 7 Hersey 6

Ross Davis scored the game-tying goal late in the fourth quarter and then nailed the game-winner with under one minute remaining as STC North defeated Hersey 7-6. Davis also made a steal in the waning seconds to seal the win. John Pretet scored 3 goals and drew 7 ejections, Davis totaled 2 goals, and both Chris Stanek and Nick Traxler scored once for the North Stars. Collin Bawolek also made 10 saves in the win. Connor Reynolds and Jack Carroll both recorded 3 goals in the narrow loss for the Huskies.

 

Vernon Hills 11 Whitney Young 10

Patrick Pranica recorded 3 goals and John Manning, Nikita Mikhaylov, and Yuriy Stepanov each tallied 2 scores in the Cougars' 11-10 win over Whitney Young. Hector Mendez scored 5 goals and both Duncan McDonald and Juan Reyes scored 2 times in the loss for the Dolphins.

 

 

STEVENSON TOURNAMENT

Palatine 13 Brother Rice 12

The Pirates erased an early deficit and fended off Brother Rice 13-12 on Saturday morning to advance to the second-place group at the Stevenson Tournament. Omar El Hoffi scored 5 goals and Wally Kleinfeldt scored 4 times in the winning effort. Kristian Kalev also tallied 2 scores for the Pirates. Matt Bachler put in 3 goals and Dan Birmingham netted 2 goals in the loss for the Crusaders.

 

Loyola 10 Oak Park 6

Andrew Hodur and Matt Kearney each registered 3 scores to help the Ramblers beat Oak Park 10-6. Mark Hallman and James Kelly both tallied 2 scores in the loss for the Huskies.

 

Lyons 14 New Trier 7

Nathan Kriha notched 6 scores and George Duffy chipped in with 3 scores as Lyons beat New Trier 14-7. Chandler Tempest scored 2 times to lead the Trevians' offense.

 

Loyola 9 Stevenson 8

Cameron Shewchuck, Jack Schermerhorn, Matt Kearney, and Tom Baker each scored 2 goals and Ragan Murphy added one score as Loyola held off Stevenson 9-8 to get within one game of winning the event. Andrew Shashin recorded 3 goals and Alex Kapecki, Alex Divanyan, Liam Holzer, Mitchell Sokolsky, and Zach Stephens each scored once in the loss for the hosts. Shaurya Gilani also blocked 15 shots on the defensive end for Stevenson.

 

Fenwick 20 Palatine 7

Danny Farmer scored 6 goals and Omar Calderon notched 4 scores in Fenwick's 20-7 win over Palatine. Bailey Wendt added 3 goals, Andrew Bertschy and David Durkin both put in 2 scores, and Will Skowron stopped 7 shots in the win. Kristian Kalev netted 4 goals, Wally Kleinfeldt put in 2 goals, and Omar El Hoffi scored once in the Pirates' loss.

 

Oak Park 10 Brother Rice 9

Lee Werner totaled 5 goals and Mark Hallman scored 3 goals as the Huskies held off Brother Rice 10-9 on Saturday. Dan Birmingham tallied 4 scores and Matt Bachler netted 2 goals in the losing effort.

 

Naperville Central 8 Loyola 7

Joe Bigenwald, Nick Walker, and Ryan Donahue each scored 2 goals as the Redhawks knocked off Loyola 8-7. Matt Kearney scored 3 goals and Cameron Shewchuck put in 2 scores in the loss for the Ramblers.

 

Fenwick 11 Lyons 5

Stevenson 11 Naperville Central 9

Mitchell Sokolsky recorded 4 goals and Shaurya Gilani made 11 saves as the Patriots beat the Redhawks 11-9 to win their own event via goal-differential. Alex Divanyan, Andrew Shashin, and Alex Kapecki each scored 2 times and Liam Holzer added a goal for the winners. Joe Bigenwald totaled 4 goals and Christian May recorded 2 scores in the loss for Central.

 

Lyons 15 Palatine 5

George Lundgren and Nathan Kriha both tallied 4 scores and Jack Patel notched 3 goals as the Lions got past Palatine 15-5. George Duffy and Thomas Waters each added 2 goals in the winning effort. Kristian Kalev and Omar El Hoffi each scored 2 goals and Wally Kleinfeldt netted one score in the loss.

 

New Trier 9 Brother Rice 2

Alex Grant, Jack Riggio, and Michael Krueger each scored 2 goals to lift the Trevians over the Crusaders 9-2 in the event's final game on Saturday evening.

 

 

YORK TOURNAMENT

York 10 Maine East 4

Wil Hubert totaled 4 goals and 4 assists and the trio of Joe Kesslering, Logan Frendreis and Matt Rodriguez each scored 2 goals in the Dukes' 10-4 win over Maine East. James Caldwell, Julio Montiel, Mike Babula, and Krystof Maniewski each scored once in the loss for the Blue Demons.

 

Whitney Young 11 Maine East 4

Roberto Rodriguez scored 4 goals, Andy Behena notched 3 scores, and Omar Gomez tallied 2 goals as the Meteors defeated Maine East 11-4. Joe Koziol blocked 7 shots and both Diego Leonas and Angelo Espinoza scored once in the winning effort. Mike Babula registered 2 goals and both James Caldwell and Krystof Maniewski put in one score in the loss.

 

Whitney Young 9 York 8

Jeremy Siegel's rebound goal with five seconds remaining help lift DLS over York 9-8 on Saturday. Angelo Espinoza recorded 5 goals and Joe Koziol made 14 saves for the Meteors, who also got one goal apiece from Dominic Quigley, Omar Gomez, and Vinnie Scalise. Jordan Jopes and Joe Kesslering each scored 2 goals and Logan Frendreis, Matt Rodriguez, Timmy Matsas, and Wil Hubert each scored once in the loss.

 

Maine East 13 Bremen 3

Mike Babula recorded 3 goals and Faran Erfani, James Caldwell and Ricky Pokorski each scored 2 times to help Maine East finish the event with a 13-3 victory over Bremen.

 

York 14 Bremen 2

Danny Stumpf and Jordan Jopes each scored 3 goals and Jack Romito scored 2 goals to help lead the Dukes to a 14-2 victory over Bremen.

Micki Chung scored 4 goals and both Lynette Allen and Maria Tkachuk scored 2 times to lead Lincoln Park to a 12-6 victory over Taft. Alexis Garcia, Alyssa Dzidzic, Aishling Martinez, Shannon Staunton, Caroline Hoffman and Caitlin Boyd each scored once in the loss.

 

Jones-Payton 17 Mather 1

Rebecca Sudworth recorded 5 goals and Bella Yeung, Meredith Lohman and Sky Gamino each chipped in with 3 goals as the Eagles downed Mather 17-1. Marlee Nork added 2 goals and Mara Hoplamazian scored once in the winning effort. Aileen Torres notched one score in the losing effort.

 

Lindblom 19 Washington 7

Orintze Contreras tallied 9 goals to lead Lindblom to a 19-7 victory over Washington. Araceli Velazquez notched 5 scores in the losing effort.

 

Westinghouse 15 Little Village 8

Alejandra Izquierdo and Madeline Garcia both scored 5 times as Westinghouse downed Little Village 15-8. Nancy Quiroz scored 3 times in the loss.

Naperville North 11 Fremd 6

Jilian Eiken and Katie Horn both netted 3 goals and Dani DiMatteo scored 2 times as the Huskies started their own event with an 11-6 victory over Fremd. Alyssa Kolenda, Caitlin Holzer, and Taylor Stoner all put in one goal in the winning effort. Megan Younker led the Vikings with 2 goals, while Caitlin Byrd, Karolina Urban, Nicole Degla, and Samantha DiCanio all recorded one goal in the loss.

 

Libertyville 8 Fremd 7 (4 OT)

Sarah Durning recorded 3 goals and both Devika Joshi and Ryan Mackenzie scored 2 goals as Libertyville outlasted Fremd 8-7 in four overtimes. Maddie Griffith also scored once in the winning effort. Samantha DiCanio and Emma Hoffman each scored 2 goals while Nicole Degla, Samantha Barry, and Tami Carlson netted one goal apiece in the loss.

 

Naperville North 14 Libertyville 5

Dani DiMatteo and Katie Horn both registered 3 scores and Jilian Eiken netted 2 goals as the Huskies won their own event after beating Libertyville 14-5. Kate MacDuff led a contingent of six players who scored one goal for the victors, which also included Caitlin Holzer, Elle Mattern, Helen Wei, Kyra Hartley, and Taylor Stoner. Devika Joshi led the Wildcats with 4 goals and Hannah Mendralla put in one score in the loss.

 

 

ROCKFORD TOURNAMENT

Okemos 14 Lincoln-Way Central 6

Top-ranked Okemos earned a 14-6 victory over LWC to advance to the first-place bracket of the Rockford Tournament on Saturday. Katie Dudley scored 6 goals and Sydney Fountain netted 3 scores in the win for the Chiefs. Kim Bernhard and Kristi Howe both recorded 2 goals, Delaney Shepard and Liz Klock each put in one score, and Sabrina Miglorini made 6 saves in the loss for Central.

 

Lincoln-Way Central 4 East Grand Rapids 3

Liz Klock scored 2 goals and Sabrini Miglorini made 13 saves to help the Knights edge EGR 4-3. Cailey Davern and Kim Bernhard each added one score, while Bernard led the defense with 4 steals.

 

Hudsonville 5 Lincoln-Way Central 1

A strong defensive effort helped Hudsonville beat LWC 5-1 on Saturday. Liz Klock scored one goal and Sabrina Miglorini blocked 9 shots in the loss for the Knights, who placed fifth at the event.

 

 

YORK TOURNAMENT

York 11 Latin 2

Grace Achepohl and Perri Brinkmeier each scored 3 goals and Sarah Lewand made 10 saves to help lift York over Latin 11-2. Izzy Gil also scored 2 times in the win for the Dukes.

 

Oak Park 9 Whitney Young 2

Katie Appell recorded 4 goals and Genevieve Curry totaled 3 scores and 4 steals to lead the Huskies to a 9-2 win over Young. Jordin Hale blocked 13 shots and both Elena Levi D'Ancona and Jilly Cronin scored once in the winning effort.

 

Oak Park 12 York 5

Genevieve Curry, Katie Appell, and Maura Dahl each scored 3 goals and Jordin Hale blocked 10 shots to lead the Huskies past York 12-5. Mia Andreoli scored 2 times, Kevan Casson netted one score, and Curry made 5 steals and drew 4 ejections. Perri Brinkmeier scored 2 times, while Grace Achepohl, Grace Feilen, and Lauren Tamm each scored once in the loss for the Dukes. Sarah Lewand made 7 saves as well for the hosts.

 

Whitney Young 9 Latin 2

Fairie Hughes registered 3 goals and Jessica Beal put in 2 scores in the Dolphins' 9-2 win over Latin.

 

York 6 Whitney Young 3

Perri Brinkmeier scored 3 goals, Grace Achepohl netted 2 goals, and Sarah Lewand made 10 saves as the Dukes fended off the Dolphins 6-3. Ellie Fitzpatrick also scored once in the win for the hosts.

 

Oak Park 20 Latin 1

Anna Vogel and Kevan Casson both scored 3 goals while Elizabeth Williams, Mia Andreoli, and Elena Levi D'Ancona all scored 2 times as the Huskies cruised to a 20-1 victory over Latin.
