Monday, May 10

Play-In Game

(8) Hoffman 10 (9) Meadows 6

Mike Christen scored 4 goals and Mike Desider added 2 scores to lead Hoffman Estates to a 10-6 victory over Rolling Meadows on Monday in the play-in game of the Barrington Sectional. Hoffman jumped out to a 5-1 lead by halftime and were able to keep their distance from the Mustangs throughout the second half before securing the win. Adam Pasicki, Jordan Kathe, Sang M. Han, and Sang W. Han each chipped in with one goal apiece in the win for the Hawks, who advance to Wednesday's quarterfinals to take on top-seed Palatine at 4:30pm in Barrington. Damian Fitzsimons totaled 3 goals to lead the Mustangs, while Sam Schmid scored 2 times and Dan Briggs added one goal in the loss.

 

Wednesday, May 12

Quarterfinals

(1) Palatine 23 (8) Hoffman 4 

The Pirates jumped out to a 7-1 lead and never looked back as they knocked off Hoffman Estates 23-4 in the first quarterfinal at the Barrington Sectional on Wednesday. Brad Ferris racked up 9 goals and Dylan Weissman and Kamil Mulawa each added 3 scores in the victory for Palatine. Mike Christen scored 3 times in the loss for the Hawks.

(4) Buffalo Grove 18 (5) Conant 13

Ian Rodriguez tallied 7 goals and Dan Striev added 3 scores as the Bison beat Conant 18-13 on Wednesday. Ryan Chiero scored 5 goals in the losing cause for the Cougars.

(2) McHenry 13 (7) Barrington 5

Reilly Shanahan scored 5 goals to help secure a 13-5 victory for McHenry over the host Broncos in the third quarterfinal. Trevor Soto scored 5 times and Brendan Lesniak added 2 scores in the loss for Barrington.

(3) Schaumburg 14 (6) Fremd 7

Brandon Kase and Mike Gergen combined to score 10 goals as the Saxons defeated Fremd 14-7. Andre Degla tallied 3 goals in the loss for the Vikings.

 

Friday, May 14

Semifinals

(1) Palatine 14 (4) Buffalo Grove 9

Ian Rodriguez scored on all three of his shot attempts as Buffalo Grove stayed even with Palatine at the end of the first quarter 3-3. Jeremy Stanton scored 2 times to lead a balanced attack by the Pirates in the first half, but the Bison added a last second goal at the end of the half as Victor Sanyn notched his firs goal of the game to tie the score at 6-6. In the third quarter, Brad Ferris registered 4 scores to help Palatine build a solid lead, but Dan Striev and Matt O'Rourke both scored late in the period to cut the Pirates' lead to 12-9 entering the final quarter.

 

The Pirates outscore the Bison 2-0 in the last period to emerge with a 14-9 win and advance to the Barrington Sectional finals. Ferris ended up with 6 goals and Stanton totaled 4 goals to lead the Pirates to the win. Rodriguez scored 4 times to lead Buffalo Grove in the losing effort.

 

(2) McHenry 13 (3) Schaumburg 8

Andrew Hertel and Phil Lesniak each scored goals in the opening period for McHenry, but Schaumburg's Randy Carr has notched 2 goals of his own as the teams finished the opening period of play in a 2-2 deadlock. The teams traded goals in the second quarter, but the defenses have been solid and the low-scoring affair goes to halftime tied at 3-3.

 

The Warriors started to put things together in the third period, as they went on a 6-2 run to break the halftime tie and take a 9-5 lead into the final quarter. Reilly Shanahan scored 3 times during the run, while Lesniak, Matt Feltes, and Tim Briscoe each scored one time in the period. Carr added his third goal of the game and Brandon Kase also scored once in the third quarter, though the Saxons found themselves trailing 9-5 with seven minutes remaining in regulation. The Saxons could get no closer in the last period, as the Warriors outscored them 4-3 to close the game out and earn a 13-8 victory on Friday.

 

Feltes and Shanahan both ended the contest with 4 scores apiece, while Phil Lesniak also scored 2 times. Randy Carr scored 4 goals, Brandon Kase added 2 scores, and Saxons' goalie Mike George stopped 10 shots in the losing effort.

 

Saturday, May 15

Finals

(2) McHenry 9 (1) Palatine 8

Phil Lesniak got the Warriors an early goal, scoring after an ejection, and McHenry claimed a 1-0 lead in the first minute of play at Barrington. Brad Ferris drew a penalty and converted the shot to tie the score at 1-1. John Giuliano scored from two meters midway through the opening period to give Palatine their first lead at 2-1. But Drew Schmitt scored from seven meters to even the score once again late in the first quarter. Justin Behrens scored in the final minute of the opening quarter to give Palatine a 3-2 lead.

 

Kyle Braun tied the score early in the second quarter for McHenry, then Schmitt tallied his second goal of the game to make it 4-3 in favor of the Warriors. Ferris responded for the Pirates, drawing an ejection and scoring midway through the period to tie the game. Reilly Shanahan notched his first goal of the game to put McHenry back on top, then scored his second straight goal after an ejection and McHenry led 6-4 with 1:24 left in the half.

 

Schmitt and Andrew Hertel both scored for McHenry early in the third period, giving the Warriors a seemingly comfortable 8-4 lead. The Warriors' defense held the Pirates scoreless after seven minutes of play and led by four with seven minutes to go.

 

Ferris scored in the first minute of the final period to get the Pirates within three, then Palatine goalie Dan Sommerfield made two crucial saves on the other end. Jeremy Stanton got Palatine even closer with a goal at the 3:41 mark, then Kamil Mulawa drew an ejection and assisted Ferris on his second goal of the quarter and a 3-0 run put the Pirates within one of the Warriors with 2:28 remaining. What a run by Palatine! Behrens scored after an ejection and four straight goals evened the score at 8-8. But the Warriors had an answer! Shanahan stunned the crowd with a goal with 0:52 seconds remaining in regulation and McHenry took a 9-8 lead in the final minute. Can Palatine respond? Ferris had a chance to tie the score, but his shot went wide of the goal and McHenry advanced to state with a narrow 9-8 victory.
