Monday, May 10

Play-In Games

(8) Maine South 12 (9) Maine East 9

David Zarychta scored the game-tying and game-winning goals in final two minutes of the fourth period to help lift Maine South past Maine East 12-9 on Monday. Zarychta scored 4 times in the last period as part of a 7-3 run that helped the Hawks overcome a 7-5 deficit with their season on the line. Mike Oulvey also scored 3 goals in the win for the Hawks, while Matt Wiegel netted 5 goals in the tough loss for the Blue Demons.

 

(7) Prospect 14 (10) Maine West 2

Ed Martin and Mike McPartlin each scored 4 goals and Joe Lakner added 2 scores to help lift Prospect to a 14-2 triumph over Maine West on Monday night. The Knights jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first quarter and used a solid overall performance the rest of the  way to improve to 13-10 on the season. Brian Johnston recorded 11 saves in the win, which moved Prospect into the quarterfinals where they will face second-seed Glenbrook North on Wednesday night.

 

Wednesday, May 12

Quarterfinals

(1) Loyola 17 (8) Maine South 5

Jimmy Nickele recorded 5 goals to lead Loyola to a 17-5 win over Maine South on Wednesday afternoon. Pat Stein also scored 3 times and Steve Freedman added 2 goals in the win for Loyola. The Ramblers held a 12-0 halftime lead before giving up a goal to the Hawks, who scored 5 times in the second half. Mike Oulvey registered 3 goals in the loss for Maine South.

(4) GBS 16 (5) St Viator 13

JJ Connor and Zach Demertzis each scored 4 goals and Igor Gryniv and Will Porter both added 2 scores to lift Glenbrook South past St Viator 16-13 in a close encounter on Wednesday night. Tom Meyer made 21 saves to help GBS fight off a strong challenge from the Lions, who led 4-1 after the first period. The Titans responded with 4 straight goals in the second quarter to take a 5-4 lead, and they went ahead 8-5 right before the end of the first half. Eric Primdahl scored 8 times in the loss for St Viator.

(2) GBN 9 (7) Prospect 4

Tytus Kwiatkowski scored 6 goals to lead Glenbrook North to a 9-4 victory over Prospect. Joe Lakner recorded 2 goals and Ed Martin and Mike McPartlin both scored one goal apiece in the loss for the Knights. Brian Johnston also made 7 saves in the losing cause for Prospect.

(3) New Trier 16 (6) Evanston 4

Konrad VonMoltke, James Bartels, and Mike Maley each scored 3 times and Matt McClone and Max Redemann both scored 2 times as New Trier defeated Evanston 16-4 on Wednesday evening. The Trevians started out with a 6-0 lead in the first quarter, in large part because of goaltender Sam Buchman, who recorded 13 saves and allowed one goal in three quarters of play. Matt Wich scored 2 times in the loss for the Wildkits.

 

Friday, May 14

Semifinals

(1) Loyola 9 (4) GBS 5

The Ramblers outscored Glenbrook South 7-3 in the second half after the teams were tied at 2-2 at halftime to advance to the GBS Sectional finals on Friday with a 9-5 win. TJ Considine scored 4 goals and Frank Toops added 3 scores in the victory for Loyola. Charlie Dowdle also scored 2 times in the win for the Ramblers. Igor Gryniv totaled 2 goals and Tom Meyer made 13 saves, including two penalty shot blocks for GBS. JJ Connor, Will Porter, and Zach Demertzis also chipped in one goal apiece in the loss for the Titans.

 

(2) GBN 14 (3) New Trier 8

Glenbrook North led 4-1 in the early stages of their matchup with New Trier, but the Trevians put together a 13-3 run throughout the remainder of the game to emerge with a 14-8 win over the Spartans. Matt McClone led the way for NT with 7 goals, while Konrad VonMoltke and James Bartels both scored 3 times and goalie Sam Buchman stopped 19 shots in the win. Tytus Kwiatkowski put in 5 goals in the loss for the Spartans.

 

Saturday, May 15

Finals

(1) Loyola 8 (3) New Trier 7

James Bartels scored with 0:40 seconds remaining to get New Trier within one goal of Loyola, but the Ramblers were able to come up with a key stop in the final minute to beat the Trevians 8-7 at the GBS Sectional final on Saturday. Connor Muphy, Pat Stein, and TJ Considine each scored 2 times in the victory for the Ramblers. Bartels scored 4 times to lead New Trier, Mike Maley totaled 11 steals, and goalie Sam Buchman made 14 saves to keep the Trevians in the game.
