TOURNAMENT RECAP (May 3-4)

 

Tournament Preview
The Catholic League Tournament kicks off with a play-in game between DeLaSalle and Mt Carmel, the winners face top-seeded Fenwick in the second quarterfinal game at 6:30pm. The winning side from that trio of teams will face either St Ignatius or St Patrick, who do battle at 5:30pm in the first quarterfinal game of the night. Loyola takes on St Rita and Brother Rice faces St Viator on the other side of the bracket, with the winners advancing to play each other in the second semifinal on Saturday.

 

Tournament Schedule

Friday, May 3

DeLaSalle 11 Mt Carmel 3

Vinny Scalise recorded 3 goals to lead DeLaSalle to an 11-3 victory over Mt Carmel in the play-in game of the Catholic League Tournament on Friday afternoon. Mick Hroma led the Caravan with 2 goals in the loss.

 

Fenwick 16 DeLaSalle 7

Matt Bresnahan scored 6 goals, Justin White tallied 4 scores, and Tommy McGuire saved 11 shots as the Friars beat DeLaSalle 16-7. Omar Calderon added 2 goals and Andrew Bertschy, Danny Farmer, Derek Guillen, and Trevor McLean each scored once in the Fenwick win. Roberto Rodriguez totaled 5 goals in the losing effort for the Meteors.

 

St Ignatius 6 St Patrick 3

Billy Barth, Gunnar Glaab, Jesus Jaurez, John Reyes, Shane Hughes, and Tom Dowling each scored once in the Wolfpack's 6-3 victory over St Patrick. Joseph Gibson netted 2 goals in the loss for the Shamrocks.

 

Loyola 21 St Rita 5

Jack Considine scored 4 goals and Michael Zahorik chipped in with 3 goals in the Ramblers' 21-5 victory over St Rita on Friday.

 

Brother Rice 17 St Viator 5

Dan Birmingham and Kevin Mayer each scored 3 times in the Crusaders' 17-7 victory over St Viator. Rob Battin scored 3 goals in the loss for the Lions.

 

Saturday, May 4

Fenwick 10 St Ignatius 2

Justin White scored 3 goals and Andrew Bertschy totaled 2 scores in Fenwick's 10-2 semifinal round win over St Ignatius. Billy Barth and Shane Hughes each scored once in the loss for the Wolfpack.

 

Loyola 10 Brother Rice 9

Cameron Shewchuck and Jack Considine both scored 3 goals and Kyle Strobel denied 10 shots and made a key steal in the final minute to help Loyola edge Brother Rice 10-9. Kevin Mayer registered 5 goals, Dan Birmingham notched 2 scores, and Cal Kennedy made 10 saves in the loss for the Crusaders.

 

Brother Rice 10 St Ignatius 7 (3rd place)

Dan Birmingham, Dan Whalen, Ian Disteldorf, and Matt Bachler each scored 2 goals as Brother Rice held off St Ignatius 10-7 in the third-place game of the MCAC Tournament. Dave Jackson and Kevin Mayer each scored once in the win for the Crusaders. Tom Dowling netted 3 scores and both John Reyes and Shane Hughes scored 2 times in the loss for the Wolfpack.

 

Loyola 7 Fenwick 5 (1st place)

Ben Pasquesi scored 3 goals and George Finn notched 2 scores as Loyola pulled away from Fenwick in the final quarter to earn their first Catholic League title since 1978 with a 7-5 win. Jack Considine and Jack Nickele each put in one goal in the Ramblers' victory. Matt Bresnahan netted 3 goals and both Andrew Bertschy and Danny Farmer scored once in the loss for the Friars.
