GAME PREVIEWS (Saturday, May 4)

 

 

 

TOURNAMENT TO WATCH

MCAC TOURNAMENT

The Catholic League Tournament kicks off with a play-in game between DeLaSalle and Mt Carmel, the winners immediately face top-seeded Fenwick in the first quarterfinal game at 5:30pm. The winner side from that trio of teams will face either St Ignatius or St Patrick, who do battle at 6:30pm in the second quarterfinal game of the night. Loyola takes on St Rita and Brother Rice faces St Viator on the other side of the bracket, with the winners advancing to play each other in the second semifinal on Saturday. The boys' semifinal games will be played at 11:00am and 12:00pm on Saturday, with a consolation game at 2:30pm and the title game at 4:30pm.

 

OTHER KEY TOURNAMENTS

CPS TOURNAMENT

The CPS Tournament heats up on Saturday with two semifinal round games at 12:00pm and 1:00pm, with the two winners meeting for the title at 6:30pm.

 

CSL TOURNAMENT

The Central Suburban League features two play-in games that will help finalize Friday's quarterfinal round setup. Deerfield seeks their first win against a conference opponent when they face Glenbrook North at 4:30pm, followed by a battle between Highland Park and Maine East that will determine who will face top seed New Trier on Friday. The four quarterfinal round games will be played on Friday night, followed by Saturday's consolation and championship bracket semifinals and culminating with the championship round beginning at 1:00pm.

 

METEA TOURNAMENT

Metea Valley hosts their second Co-Ed Tournament of the season on Saturday, with Barrington, Bremen, and Elk Grove in attendance for six games apiece for both the boys and girls. The hosts get things going early with a boys' contest with Elk Grove.

 

STEVENSON TOURNAMENT

The boys' half of the Stevenson Tournament gets underway early on Saturday morning with a rematch between the hosts and Naperville Central (the Redhawks won the first meeting in Week 2). Joining the fray soon after are both Lincoln-Way Central and Neuqua Valley for a grand total of six games that go well into the late afternoon.

 

VERNON HILLS TOURNAMENT

The Cougars host a six-team, nine-game tournament that begins on Saturday morning; Conant, Latin, Libertyville, LWE, Vernon Hills, and a team to be named later are all in attendance. Latin beat Conant for the title in last year's event.

 

WSC TOURNAMENT

The Lions look to repeat as West Suburban Conference champions, but they will likely face a handful of challenges from the likes of Hinsdale Central, Oak Park, York, Hinsdale South, or Morton. The Huskies take on Hinsdale South on Friday, with the winner meeting Hinsdale Central on Saturday morning. In the other quarterfinal round game, York does battle with Morton for the opportunity to play the defending champs on Saturday morning in the first semifinal. The tournament concludes with the championship game on Saturday afternoon at 1:00pm.

TOURNAMENT TO WATCH

MCAC TOURNAMENT

The Catholic League quarterfinal round gets underway at 4:30pm at Fenwick with the hosts doing battle with DeLaSalle, who is playing in their first conference tournament in 2013. The winner will face either Marian or St Ignatius, who play at 5:30pm in the night's second quarterfinal. On the other side of the bracket, second-seeded Mother McAuley faces Resurrection and third-seed Loyola takes on Viator. All four winning teams advance to Saturday morning's semifinal round, which features contests at 9:00am and 10:00am and culminates with the championship game at 3:30pm at Fenwick.

 

OTHER KEY TOURNAMENTS

CPS TOURNAMENT

The CPS Tournament heats up on Saturday with two semifinal round games at 10:00am and 11:00am, with the two winners meeting for the title at 5:00pm. Curie will try to pull off an upset over top-seeded Lane in the first semifinal, while Northside and Whitney Young meet in another installment of their usual back-and-forth rivalry in the second semifinal. The winners will play for the City title.

 

CSL TOURNAMENT

Deerfield seeks their first win against a conference opponent when they match up with one-win Highland Park on Thursday night in the play-in round of the CSL Tournament. The winner takes on top-seed New Trier in Friday's first quarterfinal, followed by a contest between GBN and Maine East in the second game of the evening. The other side of the bracket showcases Maine South-Maine West and Evanston-GBS, with the two winners advancing to the semifinal round and the losing teams playing in Saturday's consolation round. The championship round begins at 1:00pm with the title game being played at 3:00pm.

 

METEA TOURNAMENT

The girls' version of the Stevenson Tournament features three top ten teams and four teams overall that have their sights set fine tuning things for the postseason. Lincoln-Way Central, Naperville Central, and Neuqua Valley join the host Patriots for a six-game event that alternates games with the boys' teams in Lincolnshire on Saturday.

 

WSC TOURNAMENT

Lyons plays host to the West Suburban Conference tournament to wrap up the regular season for all six members; the tentative schedule sees Morton take on York in the first quarterfinal with the winner to face the hosts, while the winner of the Hinsdale Central-Hinsdale South contest meets Oak Park in the second semifinal. The championship game takes place in the early afternoon in LaGrange.

Seth Hughes scored 10 goals, Daniel Shumaker added 3 scores, and Matt Gonzales made 17 saves as the Dolphins advanced to the CPS title game after beating Northside 14-9.

 

 

Evanston 15 Maine West 12

Sergi Lopez Maymo scored 5 goals and both Judah Anolick and Kameron Simmons-Gill scored 2 times as Evanston defeated Maine West 15-12.

 

Maine East 9 Niles West 5

Krystof Maniewski recorded 3 goals and Tom Klein put in 2 scores to lead Maine East past Niles West 9-5 on Saturday morning.

 

New Trier 14 Maine South 7

The Trevians advanced to the CSL finals by getting past Maine South 14-7 in the first semifinal game of the day.

 

Glenbrook South 14 Glenbrook North 4

The Titans earned a 14-4 victory over GBN, as they advanced to the CSL title game to take on New Trier.

 

Evanston 13 Maine East 11 (5th place)

The Wildkits outlasted Maine East 13-11 to win the fifth-place game of the CSL Tournament.

 

Maine South 19 Glenbrook North 5

Makai DeNeve-Arnam totaled 6 goals and Ryan Pattullo scored 3 times in the Hawks' 19-5 victory over GBN in the third-place game on Saturday. Patrick Krol scored 2 goals in the loss for the Spartans.

 

New Trier 16 Glenbrook South 6

Jordan Palmer recorded 5 goals and Joey Ryan and Matt Weiser each scored 3 times as New Trier built an early 10-1 lead en route to a 16-6 victory over GBS in the CSL Tournament's title game. John Schulz also scored 2 times in the Trevians' win. Jake Nelson scored 4 goals and Seamus Heneghan and Bob Meyer both scored once in the losing effort.

 

 

MCAC TOURNAMENT

Fenwick 10 St Ignatius 2

Justin White scored 3 goals and Andrew Bertschy totaled 2 scores in Fenwick's 10-2 semifinal round win over St Ignatius. Billy Barth and Shane Hughes each scored once in the loss for the Wolfpack.

 

Loyola 10 Brother Rice 9

Cameron Shewchuck and Jack Considine both scored 3 goals and Kyle Strobel denied 10 shots and made a key steal in the final minute to help Loyola edge Brother Rice 10-9. Kevin Mayer registered 5 goals, Dan Birmingham notched 2 scores, and Cal Kennedy made 10 saves in the loss for the Crusaders.

 

Brother Rice 10 St Ignatius 7

Dan Birmingham, Dan Whalen, Ian Disteldorf, and Matt Bachler each scored 2 goals as Brother Rice held off St Ignatius 10-7 in the third-place game of the MCAC Tournament. Dave Jackson and Kevin Mayer each scored once in the win for the Crusaders. Tom Dowling netted 3 scores and both John Reyes and Shane Hughes scored 2 times in the loss for the Wolfpack.

 

Loyola 7 Fenwick 5

Ben Pasquesi scored 3 goals and George Finn notched 2 scores as Loyola pulled away from Fenwick in the final quarter to earn their first Catholic League title since 1978 with a 7-5 win. Jack Considine and Jack Nickele each put in one goal in the Ramblers' victory. Matt Bresnahan netted 3 goals and both Andrew Bertschy and Danny Farmer scored once in the loss for the Friars.

 

 

METEA TOURNAMENT

Bremen 10 Barrington 4
Quinn Johnson recorded 6 goals and Gabe Stein-Rojas netted 2 scores as Bremen beat Barrington 10-4 on Saturday.

 

Bremen 7 Elk Grove 4

Quinn Johnson netted 3 goals and Zach Crim tallied 2 scores to lead Bremen past Elk Grove 7-4. Tony Zdanavicius also made 11 saves in the victory for the Silver Snakes.

 

Bremen 11 Metea Valley 7

Quinn Johnson totaled 8 goals to lift Bremen over the hosts 11-7; the Silver Snakes clinched the event's title with the victory as they ended the day with a 3-0 record.

 

 

STEVENSON TOURNAMENT

Naperville Central 7 Stevenson 2

Christian May and Nick Walker both scored 2 goals to help the Redhawks get past Stevenson 7-2 in the first game of the Patriots' tournament. Luke Ryan and Matt Laboe each scored once in the victory. Alex Kapecki and Kurt Holzer both scored once in the loss for the hosts.

 

Naperville Central 9 Lincoln-Way Central 1

Connor Lamb, Kyle Stablein, and Joe Bigenwald each netted 2 goals to help Naperville Central beat LWC 9-1 on Saturday. Ryan Sterling tallied the lone goal for the Knights in the loss.

 

Naperville Central 7 Neuqua Valley 6

Christian May scored 2 goals as the Redhawks held off Neuqua Valley 7-6 on Saturday to finish the event with a 3-0 record. Will Russell recorded 3 goals and Alex Thoele notched 2 scores in the loss.

 

Stevenson 12 Lincoln-Way Central 3

Mitchell Sokolsky racked up 7 goals to lead Stevenson past LWC 12-3. Tristan Funk netted 2 scores in the loss for the Knights.

 

Neuqua Valley 9 Lincoln-Way Central 7

Joey Delasandro recorded 4 goals and Alex Thoele, Ian Ivkovich, and Will Russell each scored 2 times in the Wildcats' 9-7 win over LWC. Alex McCormick notched 3 scores and both Kyle Forsythe and Tristan Funk put in 2 goals in the loss for Central.

 

Stevenson 12 Neuqua Valley 10

Mitchell Sokolsky scored 5 goals and Varun Mummadi netted 4 scores to lead Stevenson to a 12-10 win over Neuqua Valley. Alex Thoele scored 3 times and Will Russell notched 2 scores in the loss for Neuqua.

 

 

VERNON HILLS TOURNAMENT

Conant Closes Season With Tournament Win
Conant capped off a 27-3 season by winning the Vernon Hills Tournament on Saturday; the Cougars beat the hosts and McHenry in the preliminary round before knocking off Libertyville 12-3 in the title game. Lincoln-Way East topped McHenry in the third-place game and Latin defeated Vernon Hills to finish in fifth place.

 

 

WSC TOURNAMENT

Lyons 15 York 5

Joe Shannon scored 5 goals, Josh Hirt totaled 3 scores, and the trio of Jack Patel, Nathan Kriha, and Peter Dore each scored 2 goals in LT's 15-5 semifinal victory over York. Tommy Kaptur also scored once in the win for the Lions. Patrick McKenna tallied 2 scores and Alex Waldherr, Nick Salek, and Wil Hubert all put in one goal for the Dukes.

 

Hinsdale Central 10 Oak Park 8

Alex Cruz racked up 4 goals and Brogan O'Doherty netted 2 scores as the Red Devils held off Oak Park 10-8 in the second WSC semifinal on Saturday. Kyle Patnode and Mark Hallman both scored 2 goals in the losing effort for the Huskies.

 

Lyons 21 Hinsdale Central 9

Peter Dore recorded 7 goals and both Joe Shannon and Josh Hirt totaled 4 goals as Lyons beat Hinsdale Central 21-9 in the title game of the West Suburban Conference tournament. Michael Dow added 3 goals in the Lions' victory. George Koulouris scored 5 goals and Brogan O'Doherty netted 3 goals in the loss for the Red Devils.

Kennedy Baldwin scored 4 goals, Jessie Cronin added 2 scores, and Nya Wilkins blocked 14 shots as the Dolphins beat Northside 7-4 to advance to the title game of the CPS Tournament on Saturday.

 

Whitney Young 6 Lane 5

Jessie Cronin scored 4 goals and Nya Wilkins blocked 11 shots as the Dolphins entered the fourth quarter trailing Lane 4-2 but outscored the Indians 4-0 in the final period to earn the CPS title. Kennedy Baldwin tied the game with a goal and Cronin scored twice in the final two minutes to give Whitney Young the comeback win. Audrey Anderson also scored once for the victors.

 

Maine East 11 Highland Park 4

Maria Protic totaled 4 goals and both Medina Husejnovic and Sandra Kietlinska recorded 2 goals to lead the Blue Demons past Highland Park 11-4. Amanda Roddy and Christina Peter each added one goal in the win for East. Maddie Gelberg led the Giants with 2 scores in the loss.

 

Glenbrook North 7 Maine West 3

Anne Edwards and Maggie Dietrich both tallied 3 scores to lead GBN past Maine West 7-3. Carly Romano scored 3 times in the loss for the Warriors.

 

New Trier 17 Glenbrook North 5

Alexana Astor scored 5 times and Kelsey Willian put in 4 goals as New Trier beat GBN 17-5 to advance to the CSL title game. Kara Lucenti, Samantha Padavic, and Shannon Kent each tallied 2 scores in the win. Vladi Milutinovic recorded 3 goals in the losing effort for North.

 

Maine South 10 Evanston 5

Anne Marie Pavlis, Jenna Zitkus, and Tyler Gooding each scored 2 goals to lift Maine South over Evanston 10-5 in the semifinals of the CSL Tournament. Yasi Nassiri tallied 2 scores in the loss for the Wildkits.

 

Maine East 6 Glenbrook South 4 (OT)

Maria Protic recorded 4 goals and Isabelle Trier saved 3 penalty shots to help the Blue Demons outlast GBS 6-4 in overtime on Saturday in the fifth-place game of the CSL Tournament. Maggie Dietrich led the Titans with 2 goals in the losing effort.

 

Evanston 8 Glenbrook North 3

Yasi Nassiri totaled 4 goals and both Honore Collins and Karissa McBride scored 2 times as Evanston got past GBN 8-3 in the third-place game of the CSL Tournament. Olivia Everhart also made 12 saves in the win for the Wildkits. Molly Orbon recorded 2 goals and Kerry Goodspeed made 15 saves in the loss for the Spartans.

 

New Trier 8 Maine South 6

Alexana Astor and Lindsey Siegel both contributed 3 goals and Hannah Caywood blocked 15 shots to lead New Trier to an 8-6 victory over Maine South in the title game of the Central Suburban League Tourney. Kelsey Willian and Samantha Padavic each netted one goal in the Trevians' win. Ronnie Coyne totaled 2 scores and Anne Marie Pavlis, Giles Malloy, Iza Matczuk, and Jenna Zitkus each scored once in the loss.

Becky Insalaco scored with twenty seconds remaining to lift St Ignatius past Fenwick 9-8 in the Catholic League semifinals on Saturday morning. Insalaco and Tammy Stelnicki each scored 4 goals and Maggie Maloney added one score in the win for the Wolfpack. Cara Borkovec tallied 3 scores and Addy Curry notched 2 goals in the loss for the Friars.

 

Mother McAuley 16 Loyola 6

Kristen Kleist recorded 6 goals and Clare Bryar netted 5 scores as Mother McAuley defeated Loyola 16-6 on Saturday. Vicky Arciniega scored 2 times while Amy Kopale, Fran Williamson, and MaryJune O'Connell each added one goal for the victors. Evan Swenson scored 3 goals in the loss for the Ramblers.

 

Fenwick 24 Loyola 9

Catie Wallace recorded 6 goals and Cara Borkovec scored 5 times as Fenwick beat Loyola 24-9 to finish the MCAC Tournament in third place. Alexa Ovalle and Colleen Barron each registered 3 goals and Haley Wickham added 2 goals in the Friars' win. Marta Considine scored 3 goals and Evan Swenson, Liz Kyle, and Katie Lynch each put in 2 scores in the Ramblers' loss.

Clare Bryar, Fran Williamson, and Kristen Kleist each scored 3 goals and Vicky Arciniega added 2 goals as Mother McAuley defeated St Ignatius 12-7 to win the Catholic League tournament on Saturday. Meg Golon also scored once for the Mighty Macs, who used a 4-1 run in the second quarter to build a lead over the Wolfpack that they would never relinquish. Diana Fernandez tallied 3 scores, Becky Insalaco recorded 2 goals, and both Rebecca Martinez and Tammy Stelnicki scored once in the losing effort.

Elk Grove 11 Metea Valley 6

Christine Juhas tallied 4 scores and both Alexa Zajac and Kathryn Noonan each scored 2 times to help Elk Grove beat Metea Valley 11-6.

Sam Gavars recorded 5 goals and Catherine Byron put in 3 scores in Barrington's 13-3 victory over Elk Grove. Kelly Meckert also scored 2 times in the Fillies' win. Christine Juhas led the Grenadiers by scoring 2 times in the loss.

 

Bremen 7 Barrington 6

Hannah Schultz scored 3 goals and Daisy Lozano netted 2 scores as the Red Jaguars defeated Barrington 7-6. Catherine Byron tallied 3 scores and Lisa Danhauer notched 2 scores in the losing effort.

 

Barrington 18 Metea Valley 1

Lisa Danhauer registered 6 goals and Sam Gavars put in 4 goals in Barrington's 18-1 triumph over Metea Valley. Grace Buenrostro, Kelly Meckert, and Maggie Mulica each tallied 2 scores in the Fillies' win.

 

Elk Grove 7 Bremen 5

Dominika Struk recorded 5 goals and Alexa Zajac and Christine Juhas both scored once as Elk Grove got past Bremen 7-5.

 

Bremen 13 Metea Valley 3

Hannah Schultz totaled 7 goals and 6 steals, Jacky Zuniga netted 3 scores, and Melissa Barrios blocked 7 shots in Bremen's 13-3 win over the hosts.

Allison Boothe and Karrie Kozokar each scored 5 goals to lead the Mustangs past Latin 19-1. Courtney Perreault and Kasia Wienckowski both added 3 goals in the win for the hosts.

 

Bradley 5 Wheeling 3

Rachel Thorson totaled 2 goals and Celine Dalde, Drew L'Ecuyer, and Katie Lehman each scored once as Bradley held off Wheeling 5-3. Kat Dobrowski scored 2 goals and Theresa Godlewski added one score in the loss for the Wildcats.

 

Wheeling 15 Latin 3
Theresa Godlewski poured in 7 goals and Kat Dobrowski netted 6 scores in Wheeling's 15-3 victory over Latin. Rachel Ropski also scored 2 times in the win for the Wildcats.

 

Mundelein 10 Bradley 5

Karrie Kozokar scored 4 times and Allison Boothe notched 2 scores as Mundelein defeated Bradley 10-5. Celine Dalde and Drew L'Ecuyer each scored 2 goals in the Boilers' loss.

 

Mundelein 11 Wheeling 5

Karrie Kozokar put in 5 goals, Courtney Perreault tallied 3 scores, and Allison Boothe scored 2 goals in Mundelein's 11-5 victory over Wheeling. Theresa Godlewski led the Wildcats with 3 goals in the loss.

 

Bradley 11 Latin 3

Rachel Thorson poured in 5 goals and Celine Dalde added 3 goals in Bradley's 11-3 win over Latin.

Alex Kanaris scored 5 times and Allison Travetto, Jenna Oliver, and Melissa Gartenberg each scored once as Stevenson started their own event with an 8-2 win over the Redhawks. Leslie Calabrese and Sarah Borton each scored one goal in the loss for Central.

 

Lincoln-Way Central 6 Naperville Central 2

Danijela Jackovich recorded 4 goals in the Knights' 6-2 victory over Naperville Central. Kim Bernhard and Liz Klock each added one score in the win for Central. Michelle Spaits tallied both goals in the loss for the Redhawks.

 

Naperville Central 10 Neuqua Valley 5
Kaela Codo and
Michelle Spaits each scored 3 times and Jenny Doyle added 2 goals in Central's 10-5 win over Neuqua Valley. Brooke Bedford and Morgan Miller each put in 2 goals in the loss for Neuqua.

 

Stevenson 10 Lincoln-Way Central 9 (OT)

Melissa Gartenberg scored the game-winning goal in sudden-death overtime to lift the Patriots over LWC 10-9 on Saturday. Alex Kanaris scored 4 goals, Gartenberg tallied 3 scores, and Allison Travetto put in 2 scores in the win. Danijela Jackovich notched 7 goals and both Delaney Shepard and Kristi Howe added one goal in the losing effort.

 

Lincoln-Way Central 9 Neuqua Valley 8

Danijela Jackovich recorded 5 goals and Delaney Shepard netted 2 scores as the Knights topped Neuqua Valley 9-8 on Saturday. Kim Bernhard and Kristi Howe each added one goal for the victors. Deanna Hoff, Brooke Bedford, Kaitlyn Gorski, and Morgan Miller each scored 2 goals in the narrow loss for Neuqua.

Katie Appell scored 4 goals and drew 5 ejections while Jordin Hale and Zoe Erickson combined to save 12 shots in Oak Park's 8-3 win over Hinsdale Central.
