WEDNESDAY'S NEWS/NOTES

The first of ten conference tournaments get underway on Wednesday as eight Public League schools meet at Young in quarterfinal action. Meanwhile, the Mid-Suburban League will determine a boys' champion when Palatine and Buffalo Grove meet at 6:00pm.

 

WEDNESDAY'S GAME RECAPS

BOYS

Andrew 18 Lincoln-Way West 3

John Fitzgerald totaled 3 goals and Shane Garren added 2 scores as the T-Bolts cruised to an 18-3 win over Lincoln-Way West.

 

Homewood-Flossmoor 13 Sandburg 12

Russell Maanum and Shay Banton each scored 5 goals to lead the Vikings to a 13-12 win over Sandburg. Kevin Kuchta also scored 2 goals in the one-goal victory for H-F. Eric Neimeier registered 6 goals and Matt Veldman scored 4 times in the loss for the Eagles.

 

New Trier 15 STC East 7

Robbie Romo totaled 4 scores and Jordan Moos scored 3 times in the Trevians' 15-7 victory over STC East.

 

Stagg 11 Bradley 10 (OT)

Zach Golob scored 5 goals to help lead Stagg to an 11-10 overtime win over Bradley on Wednesday. Zach Ganger totaled 7 goals in the loss for the Boilers.

 

STC North 13 Riverside-Brookfield 7

Michael Nield scored 5 times and Joey Chokran added 3 goals and 4 steals as STC North defeated R-B 13-7.

 

CPS Tournament

Semifinals Set For Saturday's CPS Tournament

Curie, Young, Von Steuben, and Morgan Park all advanced to the semifinals of the CPS Tournament on Wednesday night, as each team won their respective quarterfinal game at Young. The top-seeded Condors will take on fifth-seeded Morgan Park in the first semifinal, while the Young will battle Von Steuben in a matchup of the second and third seeds in the tournament.

 

Morgan Park 18 Juarez 14

Zach Wenner scored 4 of his 5 goals in the fourth quarter and Richard Leigh totaled 7 scores as Morgan Park erased a two-goal deficit and used a 7-1 run in the final period to beat Juarez 18-14. Antonio Reyes and Josue Hernandez each scored 6 times in the loss for Juarez.

 

MSL Championship

Palatine 15 Buffalo Grove 7

Brad Ferris scored 8 goals as Palatine outscored Buffalo Grove 7-2 in the second half, emerging with a 15-7 win as they claimed the Mid-Suburban League title on Wednesday evening.


GIRLS

Andrew 11 Lincoln-Way West 4

Leah McCarthy registered 3 goals and both Amanda Kuchan and Kelly McDonough scored 2 times to help Andrew beat Lincoln-Way West 11-4. Allison Rocha tallied 2 goals in the loss for the Warriors.

 

Conant 10 Maine West 7

Hannah Duke scored 4 goals and Kristi Burke added 3 scores as Conant fended off Maine West 10-7. Goalie Lucie Banahan made 10 saves and blocked a penalty shot in the win for the Cougars.

 

Lincoln-Way Central 14 Lockport 5

Danijela Jackovich scored 6 goals and drew a whopping 10 ejections and Sarah Hanly added 5 scores to help lead Lincoln-Way Central to a 14-5 win over Lockport. Sarah Martiniak also made 11 saves in the victory for the Knights.

 

New Trier 6 Naperville North 4

Sophia Palmer scored 3 goals and Caroline Hoff added 2 scores in New Trier's 6-4 win over Naperville North. Zara Wysockey also made 7 saves in the victory for the Trevians.

 

St Viator 12 Vernon Hills 5

Alli Lardner, Megan Shover, and Melanie Battaglia each scored 3 times as the Lions defeated Vernon Hills 12-5.

 

Stagg 12 Bradley 7

Liz Hadhazy recorded 5 goals and Chrissa Dremonas added 4 scores to help lift Stagg to a 12-7 win over Bradley.

 

Waubonsie Valley 8 Stevenson 7

Alex White and Ember McCoy each scored 3 times to lead the Warriors to an 8-7 victory over Stevenson on Wednesday. MIchelle Moynihan and Nikki Mandl also tallied one goal apiece in the road win for Waubonsie.

MATCH OF THE DAY

#12 Waubonsie Valley at #22 Stevenson

The Warriors are coming off a tough win/loss over/against #9 McHenry on Tuesday night and face another challenge when they go to Lincolnshire to take on the Patriots on their senior night. Stevenson is out to prove that last weekend's performance at their own tournament was no fluke, as they gear up for another postseason run in 2010.

The fourth-ranked Vikings face a tough test when they travel to Orland Park to take on #21 Sandburg in a contest that always seems to come down to the final minutes. Can the Eagles hand H-F their first conference loss or will H-F stay perfect in the SWSC in 2010?
